1 VISION FOR THE SCOTTISH ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS An aspirational Championship level regatta for Juniors, Seniors, and Para athletes that provides a platform for highly competitive, quality racing amongst the leading Scottish athletes and an opportunity to recognise the Scottish Champions across all relevant boat classes. WHAT ARE OUR AIMS? To give athletes quality racing opportunities which support their ongoing development in the sport To create more competitive racing in all categories, with as many lanes occupied as possible, giving more exciting racing for athletes and spectators alike To allow entire Clubs as well as individual athletes and crews to feel engaged with the event To offer event types and boat classes which support the agreed model for rower development To deliver an event that showcases the best of Scottish Rowing, on and off the water WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF THIS? FOR JUNIORS Junior events will be offered which are age-appropriate and relevant to the rower development pathway J14 and J15 athletes will compete in age restricted races over 1000m with skills assessments introduced for the single sculling events in addition to side-by-side racing to support and encourage skill acquisition and development [format to be agreed] J16 to J18 athletes will compete in combined Championship racing in all boat classes alongside Senior athletes and Scottish Championship titles will be awarded to the highest placed J16 and J18 crew in each boat class FOR SENIORS Non-Championship events will be offered in addition to Championship events to both inspire and engage with the wider rowing community through the delivery of fun and friendly competition Introduction of a beginner category. Student and club prizes, will be awarded to the highest placed beginner crews racing in Non- Championship events. Time trials will be used across all boat classes to create competitive heats and finals More of the singles and pairs programme will be completed on the Friday, leaving competitors in these event categories free to compete in bigger boats over the rest of the weekend The CSG / DROC workshop set out words to describe the vision for Scot Champs : Serious Top Level Aspirational Best of the best Elite Ranking (HIR Selection) The members survey March 18 reminded us that. those at the upper end of the competition pathway rated the competitiveness of racing as an important high scoring attribute.

2 FOR MASTERS All events are Championship categories over 1000m In order to introduce more competition into a limited field, events will be opened up to crews from outside Scotland (i.e. normal Scottish Championships birth and residency requirements will not apply) Where a race includes non-scottish entries, the overall winner will be the Scottish Open Champion and the highest placed eligible Scottish entry will be the Scottish Champion FOR PARA ROWERS All events are Championship categories over 2000m In order to introduce more competition into a limited field, Para events will be opened up to crews from outside Scotland (i.e. normal Scottish Championships birth and residency requirements will not apply) Where a Para race includes non-scottish entries, the overall winner will be the Scottish Open Champion and the highest placed eligible Scottish entry will be the Scottish Champion FOR CLUBS There will be a Victor Ludorum (separate competitions for Universities and for other Clubs) to encourage as many entries as possible and to allow all members to feel that they are contributing to the success of their Club at the regatta Completion of Championship singles and pairs events earlier in the weekend should free up athletes seeking Scotland Rowing Team selection to race for their clubs in bigger boats

4 FAQs Why are you changing the events offered at J14 / J15 For rowers up to, and including, Junior 15 level Scottish Rowing does not believe that the added pressure of Championship racing is appropriate for their development and retention in the sport, especially given that speed is currently the only measure of success. Scottish Rowing would like to see a more balanced approach between racing and skill development for this younger age group which we hope will encourage clubs and their coaches to invest more time on skill acquisition and recognise and reward achievement in this area. (Junior 13 athletes will be able to compete as part of a Junior 14 crew boat, but not in individual events, to support those clubs who have smaller junior sections.) Why Championship and Non-Championship events? Championship racing is the top-tier of racing offered in Scotland with the emphasis on high-quality competition which brings together a larger pool of the leading Scottish rowers and those with aspirations to challenge themselves against the best in the country. Championship racing aims to support the development of Scottish rowers and crews towards significant British and international competition. Winners in Championship event categories will be recognised as Scottish Rowing champions. Non-Championship events recognise the need for the Scottish Rowing Championships to both inspire and engage with the wider rowing community through the delivery of fun and friendly competition. The Non-Championship events will provide a positive experience for rowers of all ages including those towards the earlier stages of their rowing careers and those who are not seeking out Championship level competition.

5 Non-Championship Eligibility This category is for Seniors who would not be of the standard of Senior Championship competition, or juniors who wish to experience a different standard of racing than their age group specific races offer. The eligibility criteria are designed to restrict the events to athletes who are not currently on a performance pathway and who have not previously performed at a high level. The Scottish Rowing points system does not readily lend itself to managing this. To be eligible, a competitor must: not be entered in any Championship event at the regatta, whether rowing or sculling, J16, J18 or Senior not have represented their country in international competition, including the Home International Regatta not have competed at Henley Royal Regatta (excluding the qualifying races) within the last 10 years not have competed at Henley Women s Regatta (excluding Development events or equivalent) within the last 10 years Beginner Eligibility Within the combined Non-Championship racing we will offer recognition to the highest performing beginner crew in each event. There will be separate prizes for University beginner crews and Club beginner crews. This category is for competitors in their first year of rowing. To be eligible, a competitor must: be eligible for the Non-Championship category (as per the criteria above) not have held a competition licence, or its equivalent, from any rowing governing body until after the date of the previous year s Scottish Championships The race organiser reserves the right to include or exclude any individual from any category, for any reason, at their sole discretion. The race organiser s decision is final.
