1 2018 Masters State Team Men s and Women s Coxed Eight Event Requirements 2018 SELECTION POLICY Men s and Women s Queensland Masters Team Eights REFERENCE: EVENT: QLD Masters Team Selection Policy 2018 Men s and Women s Masters Interstate Eight s The 2018 Australian Masters Rowing Championships will be contested from the May at Lake Barrington, Tasmania. The Australian Masters Interstate Regatta will likely be contested on Saturday 12 May. The Interstate Regatta will have each rowing state and territory racing against each other in the male and female D category 8+. Queensland will select a men s and women s 8+. Each Queensland representative crew will have an appointed coach and Coxswain. The average age for the 8+ state representative boats must be 50 years or greater. The age category is taken as of 31 st of December NOMINATIONS Close 5.00pm, Friday 16 February Athletes and coxswains who wish to be considered for selection in the 2018 QLD State Masters team must submit a nomination form by 5.00pm, Friday 16 February Online nomination can be accessed on the RQ website, click here. All nominating rowers must be a minimum of 35 years old. By completing the online nomination, each rower acknowledges an awareness of the Rowing Queensland Policies, the selection criteria and agrees to be bound by the decision of the selectors and the Rowing Queensland Board. 1000m Ergometer Test Due 5.00pm, Friday 16 February 2018 (Submitted with Nomination). As part of rower nominations a current 1000m ergometer score must be submitted. Ergometer scores must be witnessed by a Rowing QLD Masters Selector, appointed Masters Crew Coach or a Club Coach. In instances where a suitable witness is not available video footage of the entire ergometer trial and includes the screen of the ergometer must be sent in to the Rowing QLD office. Please submit your ergo time electronically via to lucyb@rowingqld.asn.au if not sent as part of original online nomination. The ergometer must be set on a drag factor of 120 for women and 130 for men when performed on a stationary ergometer or 105 for women and 115 for men when performed on an ergometer with sliders. The athlete s weight must be recorded at the time of the test and submitted with the ergometer test result. Athletes ergo score will be adjusted using the Concept 2 online weight adjustment calculator. The selectors will nominate venues and dates for athletes should they wish to use the opportunity to undertake their witnessed ergometer test. These locations and dates will be confirmed and published shortly. Alternative venues, dates and times will be considered by selectors after written requests are received via Rowing Queensland.

2 Masters Selection TIME TRIALS Sunday 25 February 2018 Those, who in the first instance are trialling for an Eight are required to trial in a Pair A Masters Selection Time Trial will be held on Sunday 25 February 2018 prior to the Place West Regatta at Wyaralong Rowing Course. This Time Trial is open to all rowers who have nominated through the Rowing Queensland website and submitted their 1000m ergometer score. After this Time Trial all nominating athletes must make themselves available, at the selectors discretion, to complete a further race event if needed. North Queensland Masters Selection Time Trial Sunday 11 February 2018 Prior to the 25 February Masters Selection Time Trial a Queensland Masters Selector will be in Townsville on Sunday 11 th February from 6.00am to 8.00am to oversee a North Queensland Masters Selection Time Trial which will be run in EXACTLY the same format as the 25 February Selection Time Trial. Invitations to a squad based seat racing/selection day on the 4 th March at a location at the selector s discretion will be given based on the following: Top Six (6) ranked pairs who competed in the 25 February Masters Selection Time Trial and, at the selector s discretion, after further racing. Wildcard invitations at the selector s discretion, which may be based on the assessment of data including, but not limited to, ergometer score, prior racing history at Local, State and National Masters level and the age of the other nominating rowers and the ability to average the rowers into the required category. If at the Masters Selection Time Trial the venue is deemed unfair or unsafe due to weather conditions the selectors may re-schedule to the back-up date for selections at a venue, time and date at the discretion of the selectors. North Queensland Masters Selection Prime Trial Time and Date TBA Prior to the 25 February Masters Selection Time Trial a Queensland Masters Selector will be in Townsville on Saturday 24 th February from 6.00am to 10.00am to oversee a North Queensland Masters Selection Time Trial which will be run in EXACTLY the same format as the 25 February Selection Time Trial. Following this Selection Time Trial Invitations to a squad based seat racing/selection camp on the 4 th March at a location at the selector s discretion will be given based on the following: Top two (2) ranked pairs from the North Queensland Masters Selection Time Trial. Wildcard invitations, at the selector s discretion, which may include data from, but not limited to, ergometer score, prior racing history at Local, State and National Masters level and the age of the other nominating rowers and the ability to average the rowers into the required category. If at the North Queensland Masters selection Time Trial the venue is deemed unfair or unsafe due to weather conditions the selectors may re-schedule to the back-up date for selections at a venue, time and date at the discretion of the selectors. Please note: Attendance at the North Queensland Masters Selection Time Trial does not preclude individuals from attending the Masters Selection Time Trial on the 25 February. Prior invitations to the Squad Based Camp based on performance at the North Queensland Masters Selection Time Trial will be forfeited if invited individuals then attend the Coomera Masters Selection Time Trial. The selectors reserve the right to alter the trial format to an alternative format; this will be confirmed after nominations have closed. All nominated rowers must complete and attend all selection trials and events stated in this document. If athletes are unable to attend the nominated trials due to injury or sickness, a doctor s certificate must be provided to the selectors via Rowing Queensland prior to each of the trials commencing. In relation to nominated rowers aged between 35 and 40 years the selectors reserve the right to exclude all or any from participation in the selection regatta based on the following criteria: - Their ergometer score - Their prior racing history at Local, State and National Masters level - The age of the other nominating rowers and the ability to average the rowers into the required category

3 ROWER SELECTIONS All nominating rowers must be a current financial competitive member of their club and Rowing Queensland. Rowers must adhere to all Rowing Queensland policies and code of conduct, available on the RQ website: Selected rowers MUST make themselves available for the minimum state-based training on the following dates, as outlined by the selectors. o The minimum required training that selected athletes MUST make themselves available for are the follow dates; A Queensland seat racing/training camp which will be held on the weekend of the 4 th March An additional date which will be determined in consultation with the selectors, the crew and the crew coach. Selected athletes must make themselves available to race in the D category 8+ events at the 2018 QLD Masters State Championships. Additional training dates can be negotiated in consultation with the selectors, the crew and the crew coach. o If a rower fails to meet at least the minimum training requirements as set out by the selectors, a doctor s certificate must be provided to the selectors via Rowing Queensland. If a doctor s certificate is not provided the team selectors may remove the rower from the Queensland squad/ team and select a rower from the remaining pool of rowers who has nominated and attended the trials assuming the pool is of sufficient quality according to the requirements of this document. 1000m ergometer scores will be used to seed Selection Time Trials and to differentiate two rowers equally placed upon completion of the trials. Notwithstanding the above, the selectors reserve the right to take into consideration the following points when selecting the Masters State Team: o Average age requirement of crew (crew average of 50yrs) o Crew harmony. o Availability of rowers for State crew training. o Proven ability under racing conditions In the event that crew age averaging issues prevent the selection of a competitive crew from the nominated rowers the selectors may apply to the RQ Board to bring in an older rower of proven ability to create a competitive crew that meets the average. This would first be selected from those who nominated, failing that from rowers who will be attending the Australian Masters Championships regatta.

4 COXSWAIN SELECTIONS Nominated coxswains will be trialled during squad training sessions. The coxswain selection will be overseen by the selectors and the crew coach. Coxswains must make themselves available to assist at the selection trials. Coxswains will be selected with consideration of the following criteria: FINAL SELECTIONS Coxswain must be registered with Rowing Queensland Proven ability in competition Have a proven ability to make weight (55kg & 50kg ) Steering ability Contribution to crew dynamics Adherence to the Rowing Queensland Code of Conduct which is available on the RQ website Athlete/coach feedback will be taken into consideration from training sessions Being available for crew training sessions on a rotation bases The Selectors and coaches may also request a recording of nominating coxswains under racing conditions. The 2018 Interstate crew shall comprise those athletes and coxswain who in the opinion of the Selectors will form the fastest available crew combination. The crews and reserves shall be named once the Selectors are satisfied they have received sufficient data to make an informed decision. Please note the Selectors and Board reserve the right to not enter a crew in any event that is deemed to not be of high enough competitive standards to represent Queensland. Following final approval by the Rowing Queensland Board, the Masters State squads will be announced on Saturday 10 March From the date of the announcement, the crews will be in the hands of the selectors and appointed coaches. Once the composition of the crews is finalised two squad members (one bow side and one stroke side) who were not selected will comprise the reserves for the Eight in question. Notes: 1. All athletes must complete stipulated activities unless there are medical reasons or extenuating circumstances to prevent this. RQ is to be provided with an appropriate medical exemption form or notified of the particular extenuating circumstances as soon as is practicable. 2. Please note that by competing in a RQ selection event, you undertake and agree to abide and be bound by the terms and requirements of, amongst other things, the Selection Policy and the RQ Policies.
