About Us Thank you for your interest in West Side Boat Shop. Being a small custom boat manufacturing shop we pride ourselves in the quality, craftsmanship, durability, construction and practicality of each of the boats we build. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, river runner, racer or touring kayaker, we build a boat specifically for your needs. We are paddlers as well as you are, and understand the demands placed on equipment, especially boats. We know what stresses and strains are placed on boats, where and how to reinforce these areas because we paddle all the boats we build. We have grown into a specialty shop of sorts. We build kayaks to your specifications. Your boat will be built just for you. It can be the color you like, the construction that will be best for your application, you can even have your name laminated in the boat! Unlike other kayak manufacturers all our boats are fully outfitted and ready to paddle. Seats are installed, sanded perfectly smooth, and adjustable footrests are in place. Depending upon construction, most boats are furnished with full length foam walls. All boats can be shipped direct to your city, quickly, easily and inexpensively. We sell a complete line of kayaks and all related accessories, call us for your first, or next, kayak. You'll love the way your new boat Choosing a Kayak In making your decision, consider the following question: What do you plan to use the kayak for most? No kayak will perform in a situation it was not designed to handle. Knowing design limitations allows you to choose the correct kayak design for your application and eliminate any frustration while paddling. When you decide what the kayak will be used for most, you must recognize that there is a sacrifice in performance in other applications. Of course, if you purchase a boat with the intention of using it for only one purpose, such as marathon racing or whitewater river running, this problem does not arise. However, for those in the market for a totally versatile kayak, a compromise is required. Speaking with the manufacturers or designer of a boat is not always possible. Other paddlers with the same design or people who have paddled that design are sometimes the best source of information. There are usually descriptions of boats and performance characteristics in buyer's guides and catalogues. A knowledgeable salesperson should be able to direct you in the selection of a particular boat. Beware of Imitators manufactures using computer modeling alone to claim their designs are faster than genuine West Side Boat Shop designs are not telling the whole story. Computer modeling programs are valuable design tools but limited in producing useful output for real design application. Modeling program output is comparative by nature, testing mainly the relative feasibility of a design rather than the fine tuning of it. Modeling programs cannot simulate a kayak s movement through the water under actual paddling conditions nor can it take into consideration different paddling styles and techniques. Conversely, our boats are race tested by racers under racing conditions. Our design changes and new designs evolve over time from paddlers feedback and our performance analysis under a large variety of water conditions. Before purchasing a racing kayak, compare different models, paddle them, and ask the manufacture for actual race results; most of all make sure the boat is the right one for you. Consider not only the boat design, but construction as well. Many materials are available. The most common on the market today are fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon fiber and rotationally molded plastics. Again, a knowledgeable salesperson can give you information regarding strength and weight increases, decreases or sacrifices for various constructions. Beware of biased opinions. A store or manufacturer that sells only one type of construction may steer you toward that particular construction, which may not be suitable for your purposes.

The Accessory Question Kayaking offers a wide range of accessories. Some are absolutely necessary for safe paddling. Others are conveniences for specific conditions. Following is a list of the most common accessories used: PFD or life jacket is required and should be worn while paddling. There are many different makes and models. Finding one that is comfortable and fits properly is a matter of personal preference. Flotation most kayaks do not come with any type of flotation. Some models are equipped with foam walls that serve as deck support as well as minimum flotation. To be sure your kayak doesn't end up on the bottom of the river or lake, additional flotation is necessary. Float bags are available in several types. A standard set of float bags consists of one bow and one stern bag. They will fit most slalom type and some touring kayaks without foam walls. If a boat has foam walls, split bags are needed. A set of split bags consists of two bow and two stern bags, one for each side of the foam walls bow and stern. Both standard and split sets are available in 20ml and 12ml thickness the thicker the bag, the more durable and heavy. They also come in storage/flotation combination, where gear is put into the bag, closed and then inflated. Spray Cover often called spray deck or spray skirt. These fit around the paddlers waist and around the cockpit to keep water out. They are usually made from neoprene, but are available in coated nylon as well. Neoprene skirts are better at keeping water out. It is necessary for the skirt to fit you and fit your boat. Be sure to try them on both places before you buy. Helmets are a must for whitewater paddling. They come in varying degrees of protection. From lightweight racing helmets to foam padded river running helmets. A helmet should fit snugly, but not so tight that it might give you a headache wearing it for several hours. Poggies are made to keep your hands warm. They fit around the paddle shaft so you can hold the paddle with bare hands while having covering around them to keep them warm. Poggies are made from either neoprene or nylon and are available in a variety of colors. Paddle Jackets are designed to keep you dry. Made from coated nylon or Gortex, they should have water tight closures on the cuffs, around the waist and neck. The cuffs are made from neoprene or elastic/ velcro combinations. Waist closures are most often elastic, but an elastic drawstring which can be tightened is best. The closures can be neoprene or elastic with velcro or a tie of some kind. Be sure when trying them on you take into consideration cold weather gear, such as wool sweaters and set suits, which might be worn under the paddle jacket. Give yourself adequate shoulder room. Wet Suits are almost a must for cold weather and spring river running. For kayaking, the "Farmer John" type of wet suit offers the most freedom of movement and warmth. Similar to overalls, one can wear a wool sweater under the wet suit for maximum warmth. Also, because no arms are on the suit, shoulders are not restricted. Spare Paddles since paddles can break, a spare is a convenience on any kind of extended paddle or river trip. Because it is a spare, it need not be fancy, just durable. It should come apart in the center of the shaft so the two halves can be carried in the rear of a kayak or on the afterdeck of a touring kayak. Throw Bag a handy safety item to have along on any whitewater river trip. One end of a 30' 50' length of rope is fastened inside a floatable nylon bag. Should a rope be needed for rescue, the free end is held securely or tied around a tree, while the bag is thrown to the person in distress. These bags are available in bright colors, complete or in kit form. Dry Bags are storage bags which fit into a kayak to keep gear dry. Some are equipped with carrying straps for portaging. Various sizes are available, from camera size to large backpack sizes. Proper equipment and good instruction render any sport activity an enjoyable lifetime pursuit. Be sure all your equipment suits you, fits you properly, and is high quality so equipment failure won't spoil your enjoyment.

The Correct Paddle Once you've selected the correct boat for your application, a proper paddle is needed to make paddling enjoyable. A paddle too long or not designed for your use makes paddling a chore. Almost all types of paddles are available in a variety of materials and material combinations. There are kevlar or fiberglass blades on PVC coated aluminum shafts, wooden shafts or pole vaulting shafts for maximum strength. There are all wood paddles. There is debate regarding which material/material combination is best for individual applications. Synthetic paddles do not require any maintenance. However, if made with a hollow shaft, paddling in cold weather or cold water can cause your hands to become so cold that it is difficult to hold the paddle. Wooden shafts seem to offer the best solution to this problem. Wood paddles do need some care. If one is careful, by refraining from tossing the paddle up on the bank, dropping it in the parking lot, etc., a once or twice a year overhaul with sandpaper and varnish is sufficient. The type of material you choose for your paddle is a matter of personal preference. Most paddlers today have offset blades, i.e. the blades are set at degrees or less to each other on the shaft. Blades which are not offset catch the wind and do not perform as well as offset blades. With this offset, it is necessary to feather, or turn the shaft with your hand and wrist. Feathering is done with the right hand if it is a right control paddle or with the left if it is a left control paddle. It is recommended for a variety of reasons. Right control paddles are more easily available, which allows you to replace a paddle or purchase a spare quickly. Most left controls are special orders. The majority of paddlers use right control so a spare paddle on a river trip will more likely be right control. Should a left handed paddler break a paddle, it may be impossible to finish the trip without experience using a right control paddle. Paddle length is the next consideration. This depends on a variety of factors. While a person's overall height is important, other points have a greater influence on this decision. The most accurate method used is a combination of a person's height, weight, shoulder height above the water surface and boat design. Sitting in the boat while it is in the water, the height of the shoulder above the water surface is the most important variable and differs from person to person, boat design to boat design. Consider the example: Person A and Person B are both 6' tall, weigh 150lbs. and paddle the same boat, indicating the use of the same length paddle. However, Person A has a 29" inseam and Person B, a 34" inseam; consequently Person A will sit taller in the boat because most of his 6' height is in his body while Person B's is in his legs. Person A will need a longer paddle. Endless combinations exist, short, heavy people; tall, light weight people; long legs, short legs, etc. Be aware that your overall height is but one of the considerations in choosing a paddle length. Besides body type, boat width forward of the cockpit is important. An excessively wide boat requires a long paddle so one does not have to lean to get a paddle blade in the water. Conversely, a narrow boat requires a shorter paddle to avoid excessive "Sweeping" with the paddle, which makes steering a bit difficult. Finally, there are several paddle types to choose from, each designed for specific applications. Short, rectangular blades, either flat or spoon style, are used for whitewater river running. Spoon style blades are more widely used because of their performance characteristics. Long, rectangular flat blades are used for sea touring/expedition work. They can also be used for general touring. In whitewater, however, they tend to be useless. Oval shaped blades are used for wildwater/downriver paddling, flatwater and marathon racing. These can also be used for touring as well as expeditions in open water.

A Note On Materials Because many people like to know how strong we build our boats, we have added a short description of various materials we use. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us. Atlac 580 a member of the large family of vinylester resins. It is very tough with excellent abrasion, impact, and elongation resistance. We never use fillers or thickening agents, which weaken the resin, so you are assured of maximum performance and strength. Kevlar 49 designed by E.I. Dupont for government aerospace and ballistics, this aramid fiber has been adapted for the boat manufacturing industry. Seven times stronger than steel for its weight and 60% as dense as fiberglass provide weight savings while greatly improving the structural characteristics. Carbon Fiber is made of graphite fibers. It has excellent stiffness, tensile and compression strength. Available in various weaves and weights. Because it is very expensive it is usually only used as stiffening ribs and reinforcements. S Glass a "stain weave" fiberglass cloth, it has superior characteristics than standard E glass (approximately 30% stronger). It provides greatly improved abrasion resistance along with excellent tensile and compression strength. E Glass is the most commonly used fiber. It is made from molten glass which is spun out into tiny individual fibers. S glass is a specialty woven E glass. E glass comes in a variety of weights and weaves. Spectra 900 a new high tech fiber from Allied Corporation. A woven polyethylene available in different weights and weaves; an excellent choice in kayaks needing high impact resistance and tensile strength. Available in any boat we build as a reinforcement or main layup fabric. How We Ship Our Boats The kayaks will be shipped common carrier, freight collect. We have a double wall shipping carton for all boats, and foam bulkheads suspend the kayaks inside the carton. All boats are shipped with specific, top load only, instructions. Because of this, shipping may require an extra day or two, to insure top loading, but we never had a boat damaged. You will be required to pick up shipments at the trucking terminal, to avoid transfer onto city trucks, where damage is likely to occur. We suggest that crates be opened and contents inspected before signing. If arrangements are made for second party delivery or you authorize transport by city truck, the West Side Boat Shop will not be responsible for damages. Our Guarantee The West Side Boat Shop guarantees satisfaction from the products we sell. Most accessories carry a manufacturer's guarantee of various durations and limitations, and so far they have backed their products. We will refund your money on any item, should you be dissatisfied when you receive it, whether it be accessories or boats. Return it to us with proof of purchase, state what the problem is and whether you would like an exchange, credit or refund. All items sent to us must be prepaid postage or freight.

Eskimo Roll "How to get up-right when you're up-tight" Contrary to popular belief, one does not need to know how to Eskimo Roll in order to kayak. However, it comes in very handy when paddling in cold water or when several miles from shore. It looks easy, but can be complicated to learn. Many chapters in many books have been written about rolling, all lacking one thing - success. The "Bushnell Method", described below, has proven successful over and over with experienced as well as beginner paddlers. It is important to follow the steps in order until they are executed comfortably without brute strength before proceeding to the next step. Step 1 : Find a pool or calm body of water which is shallow enough to permit someone to stand next to the student. Be sure you fit snugly in your boat. It may be necessary to pad the seat and adjust the footrest so when you are up-side down you won't fall out. You should be able to hold yourself in your boat with your knees up under the deck, so you could "chin yourself" up out of the water "wearing" your kayak. Nose plugs are helpful as are goggles. Step 2 : While sitting in the boat, with spray cover on, grab the side of the pool or another person's hands with one or both hands. Tip the boat over half way, and using your hips only, flip the boat flat again, then tip it over again. Your face does not need to go under water. It is important to only use your hips and knees. No arm strength is needed or should be used. Keep your hands and body in front or perpendicular to the boat - never let them drift behind. Keep practicing this hip motion until you feel comfortable with it. You should not use any arm strength. Step 3 : Once the hip motion is perfected using the side of a pool or another person's hands, you can use a piece of ethafoam, or a swimming pool kickboard or anything that floats and is not too bulky or heavy. Hold the foam with both hands. Tip the boat over all the way. Holding the foam with both hands, keeping it in front or perpendicular to your body, you will float to the surface of the water. The boat can remain upside-down. With your body floating with the foam, lift your head out of the water to breathe. Use the foam like you used the pool side, and with your hips, flip the boat upright. A slight downward push on the foam is needed, but no strength is required. Practice this step until you are comfortable. Also, practice being up- Step 4 : Once the hip motion with the foam is perfected and you feel comfortable upside-down, you can begin using the paddle. Attach the foam or kickboard to the paddle using a rubber strap made from an old bicycle inner tube. Holding the paddle in the paddling position, you can lean the boat over, and catch yourself with the paddle blade which has the foam on it, before you tip over. Since the blade will not sink, you can tip the boat over, and by letting the foam float to the surface and using your hips again, the boat can be brought upright. Pull down on the shaft with the hand closest to the foam blade and push up with the other hand. Use the same hip motion, again keeping the paddle blade with the foam on it in front or perpendicular to your body ( never let the paddle/foam float behind you). This push/pull action with the paddle replaces the small piece of foam and the downward push used in Step 3. Remember, no brute strength is needed. It might be helpful for someone to hold the paddle blade stationary while you get accustomed to the hip movement and paddle position. This also lends confidence to the student. Step 5 : When Step 4 can be executed successfully, you can learn to roll using the foam on the paddle. Hold the paddle alongside the boat (it is necessary to twist your body sideways slightly and lean forward, almost touching the deck with your nose if possible). The paddle/foam should be at the bow end of the boat. Keep the power face, or concave face, of the blade's surface toward the ceiling. For this, the foam

Eskimo Roll Continued should be on the convex side of the blade. Take a deep breath and while in this position, tip the boat all the way over and remain in this position until the boat stops moving. Be sure that the paddle blades are out of the water (you can feel your hands in the air). Sweep the foam/blade across the surface of the water (someone can guide the blade for you) until the foam is perpendicular to your body, or slightly forward. This is the same position you were in for Step 4. Using the same push/pull motion and hip snap, flip the boat upright. Some helpful hits: 1) Your head should be the last thing to come out of the water. Keep it low and it will be much easier, because all the weight is close to the center/pivot point. 2) Have a piece of foam floating nearby. If you miss or need air, grab the foam and roll up as in Step 3. This teaches you to stay in the boat and boosts confidence. 3) Someone to guide the blade across the surface is also helpful. This lets you feel the movement the paddle should take. Step 6 : Now you are "ready to roll". Remove the foam from the blade. Use the same position as in Step 5, paddle alongside the boat, lean forward. It is important to keep the front blade perfectly flat or tipped away from the boat (curl the hand toward the inside of the wrist). This prevents the blade from "diving" toward the bottom, making rolling impossible. The blade should remain on or close to Step 5, sliding the blade across the surface until it is slightly forward of the perpendicular. Use the push/pull motion and hip snap-bringing your head up last, and right the boat. Have someone help you so the blade doesn't dive and is in the correct position. The position assumed above the water and before you start the paddle moving is most important. You must get into this position to roll in all situations. Practice tipping over in different paddling positions and bring the paddle back to this position before you try to roll. Always remember to use the hip snap, and less arm strength. When your arms are tired from paddling all day, it will still be possible to roll. It is important to keep calm when you do tip over. Always remember that you can bail out, but try to roll a few times before you do. Sometimes you can get up enough to cover a breathe in the first try, then go back under and roll up. Using the "Bushnell Method" to teach or learn the Eskimo roll lends confidence to the student and breaks down the roll in to various steps. Learning one step at a time makes rolling easy and something you won't forget.

Competition Build) Low wetted surface round bottom design results in very fast cruising speeds Deeply flared bow keeps a dry ride in the chop. Ergonomic paddling position(s) focuses energy in the forward stroke. Precise tiller steering for split-second course alignment (other steering systems are available). Hung seat for a low center of gravity hip control Leg Straps for efficient energy transfer and rock-solid control Rollable

Delta High Performance Touring Light short responsive this little guy slips along with hardly any effort. Its V shaped forward sections give it this speed and the delta shape enhances turning, and adds stability. This kayak could be used in white water due to its extraordinary turnability when laid on its side. A new breed of the late nineties.

Delta Continued A generous cockpit and leg room allow ease of entry and a high knee padding position. 13'10" 19" 23 5/8" 32" 15" 12" 24# 22# Designed by Doug Bushnell West Side Boat Shop (716)

Seafarer Sprint Touring The Seafarer Sprint is a large volume delta shaped sea touring kayak with sharp entry and rounded V shaped hull. Legs fit under the deck and together for performance paddling. The boat weighs approximately 30 Lbs. in Kevlar and works best with rudder. 17'4" 16'8" 19" 22" 32" 14.5" 11.5" 4.5" 35# 28# Designed by Doug Bushnell West Side Boat Shop (716)

Wild Water WEST SIDE BOAT SHOP 7661 TONAWANDA CREEK ROAD LOCKPORT, NY (716)

Dart Wild Water Racing Kayak Large volume flat water marathon racing kayak, for paddlers of any weight, especially those over 170 pounds. One of the fastest kayaks of this type. The hull is extremely "V ed" and requires a very high level of skill from the paddler as well as excellent paddling technique to achieve maximum speed and performance. 14'9" 23 5/8" West Side Boat Shop (716)

X 5 XR 5 Wild Water Racing Kayak Our most current wild water design, the X 5 is truly made in America, having been designed by William Nutt, an American paddler. It is a large volume boat, but most of its volume is above the water. Having very little hull in the water and being highly rockered make it a very fast boat that turns on demand. It has no concave sections or flat spots and it is very stable; maintaining this stability in rough water and while turning. It is also superior in shallow water. This design won both the 1983, '84 US Wild Water National Championships and the Team Trials. The XR 5 is the same hull as the X 5 with a little more rocker for a quicker turning response. 14'9" 23 5/8" 22# West Side Boat Shop (716)

RPM Special Wild Water Racing Kayak A low volume marathon racing kayak, recommended for paddlers under 170 pounds. Because of its low volume this boat can be constructed to the lowest possible weight, yet still be stiff and relatively strong. Suitable for everyday training in flatwater for technique and sprinting, relatively stable enough for long, marathon races or training. 14'9" 23 5/8" 16# Designed by Doug Bushnell West Side Boat Shop (716)

River 81 Wild Water Racing Kayak Concave sections in the hull beginning at the wing give this boat very little wetted surface area, without being radically unstable in whitewater. The paddler is situated behind center. The hull has a relatively flat bottom. This hull shape and seating position give this boat its speed, especially in shallow water. A full sectioned bow, high volume and ridge running the entire length of the deck prevent the bow from plunging in big water and give the boat structural stiffness. It is a straight running yet maneuverable kayak, stable in big rivers and waves. Ideal for expert racers, river runners and beginning paddlers /8" 22# West Side Boat Shop (716)

River 82 Wild Water Racing Kayak Another excellent design from Europe. A full 3/4" narrower at the cockpit than its predecessor, the River '81, with the seat slightly further forward, provides this boat with speed and directional stability. The hull is narrower, allowing less wetted surface area, and the flat bottom gives this design accelerating abilities. A fancy deck design deflects water before hitting the paddler and gives structural stiffness, even with the lightest possible construction /8" 22# West Side Boat Shop (716)

Leiser King Wild Water Racing Kayak Designed and used by Gerhard Peinhaupt of Austria to win the World Championship in A reverse stern design places the greatest length at the water line, giving this design an increased turn of speed. Very stable and tracks well in heavy whitewater, bouyant yet turns on demand. Although an older design, it has proved itself superior to some of the newer, more radical designs. Winning the US Wildwater National Championship 1982, the Lieser King still retains US championship status. 14'9" 23 5/8" 22# West Side Boat Shop (716)

White Water WEST SIDE BOAT SHOP 7661 TONAWANDA CREEK ROAD LOCKPORT, NY (716)

Bala Racer White Water Kayak A low volume slalom racing design from Austria. Fine ends bow and stern with more volume in the center make this a comfortable "roomy" low volume boat. A comfortable seat and thigh/knee braces on the cockpit ring provide maximum control and ease in handling this boat. Suitable for river running in "expert" hands as well as slalom racing. Available in a lightweight/strong racing layup and a river running/superboat laminate. 13'2" 23 5/8" 22# West Side Boat Shop (716)

Dolphin White Water Kayak A large volume slalom type river running play boat. Quick turning due to the fine ends and rocker in the hull. Enough volume for larger paddlers without being too big for a smaller person starting out. Rounder sides/edges give this boat performance in holes, big waves and large rivers. An excellent all around boat for river running as well as some touring. A very versatile high performance kayak. 13'2" 23 5/8" 22# Designed by Doug Bushnell West Side Boat Shop (716)

Olympic Sprint WEST SIDE BOAT SHOP 7661 TONAWANDA CREEK ROAD LOCKPORT, NY (716)

Javelin Olympic Sprint Kayak Designed in Great Britain. For sprint and long distance racing. A relatively stable design, which makes it best for long marathon races, especially where wind and rough water are a factor. Large volume for paddlers of any weight. Adjustable seat, foam walls for flotation, under stern or over stern (kick up) rudder available. White or clear hull with various colored decks. Special Kevlar hull construction available for long distance racing. Various heights for sprint or marathon racing " 22# West Side Boat Shop (716)

Otter Recreational Kayak Designed by one of the best designers in Europe, Roland Pagnoulle, the Super Tourist proves itself as an excellent all purpose kayak. Its length allows this design to track well without being slow and awkward in a river. It has a 24" wide beam, not excessively wide, but adequate for storage space while still providing the stability necessary in a touring kayak, giving this boat large volume, making it comfortable for large paddlers. Its high deck and long cockpit allows enough room for entry and exit without a cramped feeling. 13'2" 24" 28# West Side Boat Shop (716)

Baby Otter Recreation Kayak A boat for the little kayaker in the family. This scaled down version of a full size kayak provides children with a boat they can handle. It is easy to paddle, stable and light enough for children to handle on their own, but built to withstand the punishment the very beginning paddlers will subject it to. We also carry a full line of paddling gear for children, from junior paddles in wood or fiberglass, to life jackets. 9'8" 22 23# 23# Designed by Doug Bushnell West Side Boat Shop (716)
