4 RAVING FAN HIGHLIGHT SOCCER GOALS: MAXINE LANGENBERG Maxine is not sure what came first: learning to walk or playing soccer! For as far as she can remember soccer has been a part of her life and the love for the game only seems to have grown over time. It was the third scrimmage game of pre-season her senior year, Maxine collided with another girl and knew right away something wasn t right. She had previously torn her ACL in her sophomore year and this time it was the meniscus. She had surgery to repair the damage and knew all too well that this was just the start of her road to recovery. With a limited amount of time to find a rehab place, her dad did the searching. The priority was to find a place that would challenge Maxine with hard work and would encourage a one-on-one bond between patient and therapist - Coury & Buehler offered just that. Having had prior experience with physical therapy Maxine knew that being an injured player meant she would have to stay focused and positive. Knowing how important physical therapy was to getting her back on the field made the hard work easier and her focus clear. Maxine says, I have to admit I was a little nervous starting this journey again at a new facility with new physical therapists. It didn t take long to realize I had nothing to be nervous about! CBPT makes being a patient that much easier in a not so easy situation. Maxine was able to tap back into her competitive side and focus on being the athlete that s inside her - this made all the difference in her recovery. Working with her therapist Angelo Urquico, PT, DPT, OCS, CFMT, CSCS was one of her favorite aspects of therapy. Maxine says, PT is much more than just treating an injury. It s creating a bond with your patient and earning their trust. Angelo done just that and much more. Angelo challenged Maxine, which in return gave her the confidence to go forward with her soccer career. She says, It s not hard to see that Angelo s priority is seeing the success in his patient s recoveries. From day one he has always been very approachable and easy to talk to. The care and expertise he provides has been the difference maker in my road to recovery. I will always be grateful for the impact on my continuing career that he has been a part of. Maxine is now pain free and feels stronger than ever both physically and mentally. She is able to do all that she could pre-injury and is now playing Division 1 soccer for CSU Bakersfield! Maxine says, Physical therapy at Coury & Buehler has given me the opportunity to get back to playing the sport I love the most! I am able to be myself and live pain free, doesn t get any better than that! 5 DADDY, WHY DOES MY NECK HURT? By Angelo Urquico, PT, DPT, OCS, CFMT, CSCS Lauren (my 8 year-old daughter): Daddy, why does my neck hurt? Me: Lauren, you re too young to have pain! Lauren: But it hurts while I m playing with my ipad. Me: Show me where it hurts. So I have to admit, I didn t believe 8 year-olds had lived long enough to have any stress on their bodies - let alone pain! But when I saw my daughter sitting like that, I did what any good daddy physical therapist would do, and checked her neck and shoulder muscles for tension. To my surprise there were actually painful knots in there! She said Ouch, is that what you do in physical therapy, Daddy?! Of course I said yes. Unfortunately muscle pain doesn t age discriminate! Actually, there are a lot of studies out there that show the relationship between postures in children and pain. A very recent study in the Journal of Manual Therapy actually followed kids without pain for 1 year as they used their computers at school. Those with more head flexion (head looking down and in front of shoulders like my daughter above) complained of neck and shoulder pain by the end of the year. Basically the more our children s heads are forward and in front of their body, the more the muscles in back of their necks have to work. Imagine a bowling ball rolling off their bodies, and their little muscles keeping it up! As you can see from the picture below, the more bent their heads are, the more weight/stress is placed on the back of their neck and shoulders! So how do we prevent our little kiddos from getting pain? Here are 3 simple tips: 1 Take 30 minute breaks! This is probably the simplest one. Just set a timer on the tablet/ computer for 30 minutes, and have your kids stop and do some activity! 2 Keep screen at eye level. As much as possible, try to have their screens up so they don t have to look down (see examples below). BAD POSTURE BETTER POSTURE 3 Fun posture exercises! Have them improve their posture without even knowing it! Here is a fun exercise to help your kids maintain a better posture, and still having fun!! 1. Stand with your feet away from the wall and place low back against the wall. 2. Slowly roll up and touch the wall with your mid back, upper back, then head 3. Bring arms up as well so they touch the wall. 4. Have a contest with your kids to see who can do this and keep it for one minute! Parents! 6 CROCK POT SPAGHETTI SQUASH By Mandy Magoto, PT, DPT, OCS Those who know me, know I am quite the planner. I like to plan out my workouts, weekend activities, Skype time with my niece pretty much everything. Not surprisingly, I also like to plan out my meals for the week and do as much prep ahead of time as possible so that when my husband and I get home from work, we can enjoy a relaxing evening with dinner already prepared. One of our favorite prepare ahead meals is crockpot spaghetti squash. I found a recipe for it about 2 years ago and have evolved this recipe to our likings, which often includes whatever veggies we have left in the refrigerator at the end of the week. Crockpot spaghetti squash is very quick and easy to make (which is a double bonus in my eyes). The best part about this recipe is you can add and subtract veggies to include your family s favorites. It s a great way to sneak veggies in without them even knowing it. The base ingredients are a must, but you can pick and choose from the list of option ingredients to create your own version of crockpot spaghetti squash. BASE INGREDIENTS: 1 Spaghetti Squash 1 Jar of Pasta Sauce 2 Cloves Garlic, Minced 1 tsp Oregano 10 leaves Fresh Basil, Chopped OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS: 1 Small White Onion 1 Bell Pepper (any color or variety) Mushrooms 1 Zucchini 1 Squash 1 cup Kale 1 lb Ground Chicken, Turkey, or Chicken Sausage STEPS: 1. Pour pasta sauce in crock pot. Add minced garlic, oregano, and chopped basil. 2. Add meat to the crockpot and mix in well with the pasta sauce. 3. Prep all veggies. Any combination will do. Dump all veggies into the crockpot and stir around. The mixture may be thick, do not worry, the moisture from all of the veggies will add juice to the mixture when cooked. 4. Cut the spaghetti squash in half and clean out the insides. I use a large spoon for this to scrape the seeds out. Once completed, place both halves of the spaghetti squash open side down into the mixture. Push down in the crockpot. 5. Cook on low for 4 hours. 6. Once cooked, take each half of the spaghetti squash out of the mixture and place on a plate. Carefully scrap the squash out using a large metal spoon. I recommend using a hot pad or towel to hold the spaghetti squash while doing this due to it being so hot. Add the squash back to the crockpot and mix. 7. Serve up the spaghetti squash - you can top it with a little grated parmesan cheese to taste! This recipe is very quick and easy to make and is a crowd pleaser. It is packed full of veggies to promote healthy eating habits. I hope you enjoy this as much as we do. Let me know your variations on vegetables you use!
