9 Kabanata 1 Ang Suliranin at Kaligirang Pangkasaysayan A. Panimula Bakit nga ba nag coconfess ang mga tao? Kailangan ba talaga ito? Saan at kalian ba dapat mag confess? Mahalaga ba na mayroon ding nasasabihan ang mga mag-aaral ng kanilang mga karanasan, katulad na lamang sa ating Unibersidad? Ang PUP Confessions ay isang daan kung saan ang sino man ay malayang nakapagpapahayag ng saloobin na kanyang nararanasan. Malakas ang loob ng marami para gamitin ito dahil protektado ito at hindi matutukoy kung sino ang nagpadala ng komento. Kaya nga lamang, dapat isaalang-alang ng sino man na dapat maging maingat at responsible sa ano mang nilalathala sa papel man o midyasosyal. Sa kabilang banda, matapos ang paggalugad ng mga impormasyon at datos ukol sa paksang pag-aaral, layunin ng mga mananaliksik na buksan ang isipan ng mga mag-aaral patungkol sa PUP Confessions. Ilahad ang tunay na esensya at kung ano ang opinion at saloobin ng mga mag-aaral ng Unang taon sa Departamento ng Sikolohiya ukol dito. Ano nga ba talaga ang maaring maiambag ng PUP Confessions sa ating lipunan at bakit ito mahalagang pagtuunan ng pansin? Ano ang nag-uudyok sa mga mag-aaral upang ihayag ng publiko ang kanilang mga saloobin? Sa paanong ix

11 B. Kaligirang Pangkasaysayan Noong ika-walo ng Nobyembre, taong dalawang libo t labintatlo, nagsimulang mag-ingay ang The PUP Confessions sa social networking site na Facebook. Sa pangalawang araw pa lamang ng pagkakagawa nito ay umabot na agad sa 18,000 ang likes ng nasabing pahina. Ang The PUP Confessions ay isang sikat na pahina sa Facebook na kung saan ay ibinabahagi ng mga mag-aral ng Sintang Paaralan ang tungkol sa kanilang buhay, partikular na sa kanilang problema sa pamilya at buhay pag-ibig. Sino nga ba ang mahilig makinig ng maraming kwento? Madalas yan ung mga writers, yung mga taong inclined sa ganoong isipin. Aga Khan Lavarez Sociologist,PUP. Nagiging daan din ang The PUP Confessions sa mga nais ipabatid ng mga Iskolar ng Bayan sa mga nararanasan nila sa loob ng ating Sintang Paaralan. Ipinapahayag nila ang kanilang mga saloobin at hinuhubaran nila ang kanilang pagkatao para sa mga mambabasa. (Ang mga datos na ito ay nakalap mula sa artikulo ni G. Balangkas Teoretikal Ang mga sumusunod na teorya ay makakatulong sa pagpapaliwanag ng epekto ng PUP Confessions sa piling mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya, taong panuruan Sa artikel ni Kyle Arnold na may pamagat na The Need To Express And The Compulsion To Confess: Reik s Theory Of Symptom Formation, pinag-usapan ang libro ni Theodore Reik na may pamagat na The Compulsion To Confess (1925). Ayon sa kanyang paniniwala, ang tao ay may natural na pagnanais para magconfess. Sinabi dito na ang pagpula ng mukha at ang pagkabulol ng isang tao ay hindi sadya dahil sa kanilang mga naka-compress na mga karamdaman. Lumilitaw na lamang ito dahil sa nais itong maipakita. Ang pagpapakita ng ganitong mga bagay ay nagsisilbi ring anyo ng parusa sa tao sa kanilang pagbibigay-alam ng kanilang damdamin. Balik sa artikel ni Arnold, ang nilalaman nito ay ang kanyang pagmamasid sa teorya ni Reik. Kapag ang damdamin ng isang bata ay paulit-ulit na itinatanggi, natututunan nila itong itago. Ang resulta nito ang pagpigil at pagtago nila ng kanilang opinyon at damdamin. Maiipon ito sa paglaki nila at dadami ang mga bagay na kanilang tinatago. Kasama na dito ang paglaki ng kanilang pagnanais na ipahayag ito sa iba, maging maganda man o masagwa ang kanilang kaisipan. The present article offers a close reading of Reik s theory of symptom formation. Drawing on two-person aspects of Freud s work, Reik argues that humanbeings have a basic need to express ourselves to others. The child s expressions develop as compromises between the urge to express and internalized responses of caregivers to expressions, which are consolidated into the super-ego. When others repeatedly reject the child s expressions, the child comes to reject its own expressions through repression. Repressed expressions return as composites of the need to express and the internalized prohibitons against expression. These xii

13 composites emerge as unconscious confessions in which the patient both communicates repressed material and punishes herself for doing so. Reik proposes that neurotic symptoms comprise such unconscious confessions. ( o_confess_reiks_theory_of_symptom_formation) Mayroong tinatawag ang mga mananaliksik na Online Disinhibition Effect. Ito ang pagkakaluwag o pagkakabitaw ng mga mabuti o karaniwan na ugali ng mga tao pagdating sa Internet. May dalawang klase ito; ang Benign Disinhibition at ang Toxic Disinhibition. Kung iuugnay sa PUP Confessions, hindi nila buhat ang mga kahihitnan at responsibilidad ng kanilang mga sinasabi dahil sa pagiging anonymous ng confession sa internet. Benign ito kapag ang confession nila ay simpleng pagbunyag lamang ng nararamdaman o opinyon. Toxic naman ito kapag puro malulupit na pintas at pananakot ang nilalaman ng post. Ang isa pang pagunawa sa benign ay ang klase kung saan may matututunan ang gumagawa sa kanilang ginagawa, habang sa toxic naman ay walang pag-aaral na makukuha sa kanilang mga kilos, at kung meron man, ay hindi kaakit-akit ang kanilang pagunlad. It's well known that people say and do things in cyberspace that they wouldn't ordinarily say or do in the face-to-face world. They loosen up, feel more uninhibited, express themselves more openly. Researchers call this the "disinhibition effect." It's a double-edged sword. Sometimes people share very personal things about themselves. They reveal secret emotions, fears, wishes. Or they show unusual acts of kindness and generosity. We may call this benign disinhibition. On the other hand, the disinhibition effect may not be so benign. Out spills rude language and harsh criticisms, anger, hatred, even threats. Or people explore xiii

14 the dark underworld of the internet, places of pornography and violence, places they would never visit in the real world. We might call this toxic disinhibition. ( xiv

17 E. Paglalahad ng Suliranin Ang pag-aaral na ito ay naglalayon na malaman ang epekto ng PUP Confessions sa piling mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya. At upang malaman ang mga tiyak na sagot sa mga sumusunod na katanungan: 1. Ano ang PUP Confessions? 2. Bakit nahuhumaling ang mga piling mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya sa PUP sa pagbabasa, pagmumungkahi o pagkokomento at pag popost dito? 3. Paano nakakaapekto ang PUP Confessions sa nagbabasa at nagcoconfess dito? (Mabuti at masamang epekto) 4. Ano ang opinyon ng piling mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya sa PUP Confessions xvii

Kahalagahan ng Pag-aaral Ang pananaliksik ng epekto ng The PUP Confessions (TPC) sa mga magaaral ng Sikolohiya sa Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas ay mahalaga sa katauhan ng mga sumusunod: Mga Mag-aaral. Mapalago ang kaalaman sa pamamagitan ng pag-limita sa masamang epekto at paunlarin pa ang dulot ng TPC sa mga mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya. Maisabuhay at mapakapag-ambag sa bayan ng mga natutunan mula sa mabuting dulot ng TPC, ang iba pang kahalagahan ng pananaliksik. Mga Guro. Malaman at mapaunlad ang paggabay sa mga mag-aaral. Mahalaga rin ang pananaliksik na ito upang maggamit ang ilang epekto ng TPC sa mas epektibong pagtuturo ng ilang asignatura. Paaralan. Ang mga piling mag-aaral sa unang taon na mula sa BS Psychology 1-4 ay napapabilang sa aming nais na isurbey. Tatlumpung mag-aaral lamang ang bilang ng aming respondente sa pananaliksik. xix

20 H. Katuturan ng Salitang Ginamit Admin- ang taong/ mga taong siyang nangangasiwa sa page na kanyang/kanilang ginawa Batman - Admin ng The PUP Confessions. Ang may kapangyarihan na magpost ng mga sikreto ng mga PUPians. Benign Disinhibition mga confession na may simpleng pagbubunyag ng nararamdaman o opinion. Facebook (Fb) isang social networking site. Online Disinhibition Effect- Ito ang pagkakaluwag o pagkakabitaw ng mga mabuti o karaniwan na ugali ng mga tao pagdating sa Internet. Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas (PUP)- isang pamantasan ng estadong matatagpuan sa Santa Mesa, Maynila, Pilipinas. Kilala rin sa tawag na "Sintang Paaralan." PUPians - tawag sa mga mag-aaral ng Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas. Sikolohiya- Ang sikolohiya o dalubisipan ay ang pag-aaral ng isip, diwa at asal. Social networking site - ang paggamit ng mga serbisyo sa web na ginagamit upang makakonekta at makisalamuha sa mga tao tungkol sa ibinahaging mga aktibidad o interes. The PUP Confessions (TPC)- Isang sikat na pahina sa "Facebook" na kung saan ibinabahagi ng mga mag-aral ng Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas ang mga pangyayari tungkol sa kanilang buhay, partikular na sa kanilang problema sa pamilya at buhay pag-ibig. 21 KABANATA II Mga Kaugnay na Pag-aaral at Literatura Banyagang Pag-aaral Ang pagsisiwalat ng damdamin, karanasan, at mga sikreto ay hindi madaling gawin o panindigan. Kung tutuusin madalas tayong magkuwento sa ating mga kaibigan, sapagkat naniniwala tayong di nila tayo huhusgahan at di nila ipagkakalat ang ating mga karanasan. Subukan mong isipin na may isang estranghero ang tumabi sayo sa loob ng dyip o bus, at nagsimula siyang magkuwento sayo ng mga sikreto tungkol sa kanyang pamilya, sarili at malalaswang hangarin niya sa buhay. Maaaring lumipat ka ng upuan, bumaba ng dyip, o pumikit na parang bata at manalanging maupos sa harapan mo ang taong iyon. Kaya't huwag na tayong magtaka kung bakit kay daming online confession pages sa social media na nagkalat, sapagkat nakatago ang pagkatao ng mga taong naglalahad ng kanilang mga kuwento dito. Ngunit, nakakabuti ba ito? May masama at mabuti ba itong epekto sa mga mambabasa? Bakit nga ba maraming hayok na hayok sa mga ganitong uri ng gawain? Ayon kay Abraham Rutchick isang propesor sa Sikolohiya sa California State University Northridge, "A few things I like about confession pages is that people can freely say what they truly think and feel without fear of judgement and or harassment from their peers and ask for help or advice without having to reveal who they are. But sadly with anonymity becomes trolls and jerks who ruin the fun and idea of the page." Ngunit ipinaalala nuya din na may dalawang resulta ang nangyayari sa tuwing tayo'y magco-confess: ang una'y bumababa ang "standards" o "lebel ng moralidad" ng tao araw-araw, ang pangalawa nama'y nagkaroon ng "adoption" o panggagaya ng katauhan ng ibang tao. 22 Batay sa resulta ng kanyang pag-aaral, mas maraming ginagawang di magagandang bagay ang mga kabataan kapag nakatago ang kanilang katauhan. Sinusuportahan naman ito ng Psychology Behind Why We Keep Secrets ayon dito, "Some experts say that people's greatest fear is not death, suffering, or even public speaking. It is humiliation and judgement." Pinatutunayan lamang nito na kaya nakatago ang pagkatao ng mga nagco-confess ay sa kadahilanang takot silang pag-usapan at mahusgahan ng mga mambabasa, bukod pa rito ayaw na nilang madamay sa mga usaping sila ang gumawa sapagkat natatabunan ito ng iba pang usapin sa social media. Ayon Sa librong "The Writing Cure: How Expressive Writing Promotes Health and Emotional Well-being" na sinulat nina Lepore at Smyth, ang pagsusiwalat at pagsusulat ng mga saloobin at karanasan ay nakatutulong sa mental at pisikal na aspeto ng ating buhay. Tinatawag itong "Psychological Sense of Community" ng mga Social Psychologist, na kahuluga'y isang grupo na may pare-parehong mga saloobin sa iba't ibang uri ng karanasan na nakatulong sa kanila upang maging maginhawa ang sariling pakiramdam. Other conversations have taken place with the aid of the wall. People write from left to right and from top to the bottom. Some words have been there for so long that they have faded or smudged. In these public spaces, individuals pour out the emotions and thoughts they would not necessarily share with their families or friends. Hiding your identity, it turns out, can help you embrace your identity. "People don't feel the social pressure they would feel if they're identified," said Nicholas Merola, a Northwestern postdoctoral student who studies cognitive and social interaction in technological interactions. You can identify yourself in a way you don't have to hide. Anonymity doesn t only take the form of graffiti. Northwestern Confessions is a Facebook page where students can submit their "confessions" anonymously. The anonymous confessions in this public online space are much more negative, frequently loaded with four-letter words. And that s ok, according to Gary Fine, a Northwestern professor of sociology who specializes in social psychology and cultural sociology. "Some people enjoy the hostility. It's a basis of comedy," he said. He added that for a lot of people, throwing heavy words into anonymous messages would make the confessions bolder and funnier, and attract more views. Anonymity not only allows individuals to vent about problems they perceive in xxvi

27 their lives or others it can also crowd-source solutions to those problems. After reading the post of one confessor who asked "is it weird to still be a virgin?" on Northwestern Confessions, Merola was inspired to conduct research on anonymity and support on NU Confessions. He and his team in Northwestern s Social Media Lab analyzed the confessions and found that the online space is used to "find support and information, particularly on taboo topics, and to explore stigmatized identities with an audience of peers who share contextual knowledge." That is, "Facebook confession boards" are borne out of a need for an online conversation in which dialogue for the most part is not connected to one's online presentation, which is often purposefully maintained and yet not fully removed from one's offline identity. Merola and his fellow researchers found that in addition to the benefits anonymity provides, confession boards also allow individuals to reach out to those not in their immediate circles. Merola noticed beneath the Facebook post, "is it weird to still be a virgin", individuals responded via self-identified comments that they too have felt uncomfortable at times being virgins at their age, and some encouraged the anonymous person to go to CAPS or CARE for more substantial help if she or he needed it. Merola cited Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman, who saw life as a stage and individuals as actors who performed expected roles like losing one s virginity every day. "But when we're anonymous, we don't have be on stage," Merola said. The NU Confessions post allowed students to provide support to an anonymous individual. And in the bathroom stall at University Library, another brief exchanged also showed the power of anonymity in building community. "IT GETS BETTER" "YOU PROMISE?" "PROMISE" ( xxvii

28 Psychology of Anonymity To better understand the problems surrounding freedom of speech in online gaming, it is helpful to first understand the psychology of anonymity and its role in relation to the speech in online games. In most game lobbies you enter today, you are greeted with profanities, obscenities, and caricatures, but would these same individuals be saying the same things in a real room that isn t hidden behind the curtain of the virtual world? The answer is almost certainly a no. On one side, there have been numerous studies done proving that with anonymity, human nature tends to be cruel and self-centered. One such study placed female college students in a space in which their identities were shielded and they were allowed to administer [fake] electrical surges to patients coming in. The study showed that over time, the electrical surges grew in duration especially towards patients who the female college students didn t like. Just like these female college students became more cruel in their shrouded identity, so do many online gamers. Under the assumption that there can be no consequence, many gamers choose to be much more cruel with their online personas then they would ever be face to face with others. But, on the other, new studies have been released to say that anonymity doesn t necessarily mean negative results will ensue. In one recent study, the effect of the online environment was taken into account. More specifically, they looked at how a player reacts towards codes of conduct inherent in one virtual environment over another. They found that, in virtual spaces where strong, external messages on how to behave were present, players found it in themselves to abide by those environmental cues. Even though they were shielded from identification, they were still compliant and willing to respect the virtual environment they were in. The impact of anonymity, although present in the online realm, is not yet fully xxviii

29 understood. Many psychologists will argue that individuals faced with anonymity online undergo deindividuation, meaning that they no longer associate themselves as individuals to the extent where their actions and speech will no longer even adhere to social norms. Although this is a trend that is seen among many gamers, the studies suggesting that the gaming environment is just as important as the players anonymity in determining their behavior indicates that anonymity is not the sole reason for negative issues that arise in online gaming speech and actions. These latter studies imply that the issue may actually lie with the environments and social cues established amongst a group of gamers and that anonymity is not the problem, but serves to exacerbate the existing problems that arise from competitive human nature. ( Self Constellations Across Media The self interacts with the environment in which it is expressed. It is not independent of that environment. If a man suppresses his aggression in life but expresses it online, both behaviors reflect important aspects of his personality that surface under different conditions. If a woman is shy in-person but outgoing online, neither self-presentation is more true than the other. Both are dimensions of who she is, each revealed within a different situational context. Instead of thinking that personality is constructed in layers with the environment "out there" somewhere, we can conceptualize it as an intrapsyhic field containing clusters or constellations of emotion, memory, and thinking that are interconnected with certain environments. Some constellations overlap, others are more dissociated from each other, with environmental variables influencing those levels of integration and dissociation. Personality dynamics involve the complex xxix

30 interactions among these various clusters within the self and in relation to the environment. An extreme version of these dynamics occur in a multiple personality disorder, in which consciousness shifts laterally from one constellation of personality formation to another, with strong dissociative barriers between those formations. In the more "normal" person, the distinction between the formations may be less dramatic, and the dissociative barriers less intense, but the same alterations in identity expression does occur. These ideas about self constellations extend as far back as William James' theory of consciousness shifting from one focus to another within a field of associations. They also are consistent with contemporary theories about dissociation and the information processing of experience.therefore, we can think of the disinhibition effect as a person shifting to an "online" personality constellation that may be dissociated - in varying degrees, depending on the person - from the in-person constellation. Inhibiting guilt, shame, or anxiety may be features of the inperson self but not that online self. This constellations model also helps explain other online phenomena, like identity experimentation, role-playing fantasy games, multitasking projects, and other subtle shifts in personality expression as we move from one online environment to another. In fact, a single disinhibited "online self" probably does not exist at all, but rather a collection of slightly different constellations of emotion, memory, and thinking that surface in and interact with different types of online environments. Different communication modalities enable different expressions of oneself. They allow us to see the different perspectives of that complex thing we call "identity." This is something to keep in mind for online psychotherapy. Using a multidimensional analysis of the various features of cyberspace, a comprehensive theory of online psychotherapy explores how the design of a computer-mediated environment allows for the inhibition, expression, and development of different xxx

31 aspects of a person's identity. ( Anonymity on the Internet and it s Psychological Implications for Communication CORINA IANE Abstract. Anonymity is often regarded as a negative feature of online communication because it allows speakers to behave antisocially without being at risk of facing repercussions. Hackers and online activists that use the ability to hide their identities as a means to protest against organizations and businesses are regarded with dread by the press, as they convey a general feeling of vulnerability in front of seemingly untouchable people. However, it is important to regard anonymity through an objective lens and reveal the positive aspects it lends to communication. Among these, one can count the lack of prejudice between communicators and the ability to focus on ideas and information instead of the social status of the speaker, which often leads to biased interpretations of their message. At the same time, the cathartic value of anonymous communication should not be ignored as it reminds us that people are psychologically multifaceted, not simple mirrors reflecting one identity ascribed to them. Since the Internet was opened to the public as a means of communication and following its transition into mainstream use, there have been consistent efforts to make it more and more similar to face-to-face communication. Names and pseudonyms (or handles) were followed by avatars, which could either be photos of the real people or mere representations. Voice and video, instantaneously conveyed between speakers, further added to the realism of remote communication. All of these features allow for a richer and contextualized transmission of messages between communicators by presenting users with tone of voice and body language, which they are deprived of in writing. At the same time, other Internet users focused on technology not only to preserve the faceless xxxi

32 aspect of computer mediated communication (or CMC) but to advance the absoluteness of anonymity online. Anonymity can be conceptualized as the degree to which the identity of a message source is unknown and unspecified; thus, the less knowledge one has about the source and the harder it is To specify who the source is among possible options, the more anonymity exists (Scott, 2005, p. 243). The online use of real names is already relatively rare outside the social networks, but most sites allow and surreptitiously even encourage the revealing of nationality, gender and the use of an avatar, aside from a username. Online anonymity is not a common occurrence, and it is almost never encouraged. Indeed, influential companies in the industry, such as Facebook, argue that pseudonyms and multiple identities show a lack of integrity (Kirkpatrick, 2010). The newest and fastest growing social network, Google Plus, considered by many to be a rival of Facebook, currently has a real names policy, and users who are found to have signed up using pseudonyms have their account suspended. Google, however, claim this arrangement is temporary, and that it is only used now in order to create a certain atmosphere in the social network. Interestingly enough, they released that statement the day after a speech by Christopher Poole at the 2011 Web 2.0 summit, where the founder of 4chan.org lamented Facebook s, Google s and to a certain extent Twitter s attitudes to anonymity. As online communication is becoming more popular as technology allows for it to become increasingly life-like, little attention is given to using the online medium for the purpose of participating in almost absolutely anonymous communication, and the little attention this receives is mostly negative. Social networking sites value sincerity when it comes to identity and they, as well as the media, portray the use of pseudonyms as forms of avoiding responsibility for what is said and done while under its protection. xxxii

33 These prejudices have caused research to become biased and be conducted on the hypotheses that anonymous communication leads to antisocial behaviour and deindividualisation, making it more similar to crowd behaviour. The hostility towards anonymous sharing of information has existed since long before the internet, Soren Kierkegaard s essays against the Press and the trivialization of easily accessible information being one of the most eloquent expressions of worries that are as pertinent today as they must have been two centuries ago. However, the organic development of anonymous groups and their very recent involvement in socially important movements, such as political protests around the world, are beginning to show another side to anonymity, and new advantages to that form of communication. What can be concluded from observing these developments is that in opposition to Kierkegaard s pessimism, it is possible for the trivialization of online information to be turned into pertinent knowledge and then to be turned into conviction and motivation, as the Occupy movement illustrates. However, such a transformation might require that anonymity is a choice instead of a consequence, and that the anonymous communicators stay in contact as a group. These two features are absent from the Press that Kierkegaard criticized. At the same time, a deeper delving into the attitudes of anonymous communicators, while observing 4chan founder Christopher Poole s view of people as multifaceted, reveals that the deindividualization anonymity was accused of causing is only on the surface. What changes is not the value of the identity people ascribe to, but instead they reveal a new identity, all the while remaining the same person. Although it is true that anonymity is often used with malicious intent, its value in communication should not be overlooked, as online anonymity strips communicators of prejudices such as gender, race and nationality, which allow for a completely new communication where ideas and arguments rely on themselves in order to have value, instead of the reputation of the speaker, and sincerity is relieved of the shackles normally imposed by face-to-face communication. xxxiii

Still, some people are posting their confessions on the app Secret, created by a Silicon Valley start-up that last week collected $25 million in funding that sums up to a total of $35 million so far. Now that Europe is dealing with the right to be forgotten,' users seem to be growing more sensitive to the pitfalls of having their personal history permanently posted online. By contrast, the anonymity promised by apps like Secret--and other apps targeting this market like Confide, Whisper and Yik Yak -- can feel like a relief. Here's how Secret works: The app lets users share comments with people located nearby and with friends and friends of friends (through an algorithm that tracks phone and Facebook contacts), without revealing the identity of either the person sending the message or the person receiving it. When the app was first launched in February, critics argued that it would be used for purposes like bullying, sexting or other kinds of inappropriate or hurtful comments. But the creators say that people are instead commenting on a surprising range of issues, including current affairs like Gaza last week, politics, dating, work--even existential confessions and reflections. Topics tend to ebb and flow, similar to Twitter, said David Byttow, cofounder of Secret. Either there s a new trend popping up, or there s a common xxxiv

35 sentiment shared among communities. It's kind of like Twitter in that we see trends and themes pop-up. But, we see a lot of people asking questions that they wouldn't ask anywhere else like What's your title, gender and salary? or How do you know when your relationship is over?,' he said. Talking about emotions is indeed one of the most widespread uses of the app, which encourages people to express their feelings out loud, without facing any repercussions for what they say. Posts can go viral based on other people s reactions: if they click the heart button, it means that the message is favored; the more people like it, the better it ranks. The company is also working on adding functions to help users connect better with one another on a one-to-one basis, like Tinder does, by linking people geographically. Based on the premise that users self-regulate themselves when talking in social media forums, Secret creators expect them to use the app to set their creativity free. There is a surplus of personal thoughts, feelings and questions we have on a moment-by-moment basis, but are afraid or reluctant to share, Byttow says. Secret gives people a safe, well-lit space to talk about what they really think or feel; and for their friends or people in their network to respond. The cathartic value that some see in Secret is expressed in multiple ways, with posts talking about frustrations, failures and unresolved issues. A common thread is about letdowns and regrets: It's as if people are willing to say things they wouldn t even tell their best friends. But some don t think this is positive: psychology expert Wade Harman think that apps like this one might make some people become less socially-oriented and keep more to themselves by not taking responsibility for their own words. Identity is everything in social media, especially when you are trying to build a presence online, said social media expert Wade Harman. From a strictly psychological standpoint, without revealing your identity you can t build trust, let alone building a community on social. If they can t find you and know who you are, there is no emotional connection. xxxv

36 Dr. Pamela B. Rutledge, director of Media Psychology Research Center, a non-profit dedicated to media research, said that while there is a risk of hurtful comments posted on Secret, it's somewhat unlikely. There is the risk of bullying and misinformation. Most bullying, however, is not anonymous because it is about power and reinforcing group affiliation, she said. In those cases, she recommends removing the app from the phone. In her opinion, the app can actually offer people some potential healing: Being able to externalize our feelings of shame, regret, pain and guilt can be psychologically helpful...we are social creatures with an unending interest in other people. Seeing private thoughts and feelings is compelling given our need for social connection and community. Secret app creators haven t revealed figures on their user base, but they said it keeps growing. One of the founders, David Byttow, said the company is scaling and expanding internationally; Secret is already becoming popular in Russia, the Netherlands and China, where the start-up recently formed a joint venture with a local company. But with the help of Facebook and Survey Monkey, sharing all sorts of scandalous information can become addicting. In just a matter of about four and a half months, CSUN Confessions, a Facebook page allowing CSUN students to anonymously admit whatever they d like, has garnered more than 1,600 confessions and more xxxvi

Some of (the confessions sound) so ridiculous that it s unbelievable, said Katherine Dao, 19, a biology major. Dao learned about the page through friends and decided to take a look. She said she checks the page every once in awhile when she s bored, but hasn t liked it so posts don t flood her newsfeed. The popular page is not unique to the university. Other universities, including UCLA, Cal Poly Pomona and UC Santa Cruz, have confession pages for their respective institutions that receive attention as well. So what is it that makes this social media-based confession forum appealing? Anonymity Just like a cloak of invisibility, there s something attractive about hiding behind an anonymous identity. For Ryan Wilson, 19, a music industry studies major, the anonymity aspect of CSUN Confessions has positive and negative consequences. A few things I like about the page is that people can freely say what they truly think and feel without fear of judgment and or harassment from their peers and ask for help or advice without having to reveal who they are, he said. But sadly with anonymity comes trolls and jerks who ruin the fun and idea of the page. When one is anonymous, two things happen at the same time, said Abraham Rutchick, professor of psychology at CSUN. One is the loss of who you are normally, or your standard everyday self. And the second piece is the adoption of a different identity, if you want, Rutchick said. Many posts on the page are not actual confessions, but advice and statements of fact, most of which are racist and sexist in nature and are often negative. Others pertain to relationship woes, sexual encounters, thoughts, desires and people disliked in specific course sections. Rutchick, who is an expert in social psychology, said he sometimes does an xxxvii

38 experiment in class where he asks his students what they would do if they were invisible for a day. Responses largely include robbing banks, playing practical jokes on friends, spying on people and even inflicting pain on a former lover. When individuals have an ability that they previously did not possess, he said people s instinct is to engage in activities they could not do without it. I think we generally want credit for the good things we do, and don t want blame for the bad things we do, so anonymity naturally tends to push us toward things that are less prosocial, he said. While the identities of those who make confessions on the page are unknown, users who post comments are not. Rutchick said it appears that comments made are not as severe as the anonymous confessions. Because commenters are identifiable through their Facebook profiles, they are publicly accountable for what they say. This fact, however, has not deterred too many people from responding to posts. I comment on these posts to show people that I am honest and open about my opinions. I am not afraid to show people what is on my mind, instead of anonymously posting on the page, said Varderes Barsegyan, 20, a physics major. Confessions are part of Western society Anonymity is not the only alluring aspect of the idea behind college confessions pages. Gina Giotta, professor of communications at CSUN, said confessions are at the heart of Western society. You might even say confession is how we organize social life in the west for centuries now. If you think about law, if you think about religion, it s all centered around confessions, she said. Giotta s areas of research include the social, technological and cultural life of media artifacts, and new media. This semester she teaches communication and technology. Confessions have been transformed into entertainment for the American public, Giotta said, and this can be seen in the popularity of reality TV. There s a xxxviii

39 strong interest in telling those secrets. Otherwise there wouldn t be so many reality stars out there clamoring to tell you about their sex lives and those sorts of things, she said. Confessing is also therapeutic It makes us feel better and it makes sense that we seek pages like this, Giotta said. Some find the page also serves as a way for individuals to express themselves. Personally I feel (CSUN Confessions is) a good outlet for people to voice their true thoughts and feelings, Wilson said. While the desire to confess is not new, the ways in which individuals can admit secrets has evolved. What we re seeing with Facebook confessions is you have an audience for your confessions, and that s not something we always had, because in order to confess you need somebody to listen to you, Giotta said. You need an audience, and that s what social media provides an inbuilt audience that will listen to you. To make an anonymous confession, users click on a link posted on the Facebook page and are then directed to a form on Survey Monkey. There, people can type up what they would like to confess, submit it and see it on the page some time afterward. No names are attached to the posts, but each confession is numbered, reflecting how many have been made so far. Food for thought Despite the fact that confessions are deemed anonymous, Giotta offered a piece of advice to people using the page: If you think that you re anonymous online, think again, she said. While names are not attached to confessions, Giotta said there are ways to figure out who people are online. There are certain identifying features that identify not only your computer but the network that you re on. So if somebody s savvy enough and really wants to find out who you are, there are ways that they can do it, she said. Submitting a confession through Survey Monkey does not guarantee anonymity, according to xxxix

40 Giotta. The Internet is a giant copy machine that doesn t forget and the means by which people can figure out your identity online are fast and oftentimes unknowable to non-tech people, she said. ( xl

45 KABANATA 3 METODO NG PANANALIKSIK Ang kabanatang ito ay naglalahad ng mga pamamaraang ginamit, populasyon, istratehiya sa pagpili ng mga kalahok, paglalarawan sa mga kalahok, paghahanda ng instrumentong ginamit sa pag-aaral, mga hakbang na ginawa sa paglikom ng mga datos at magiging bilang ng kalahok at estadistikang ginamit sa pagsusuri at pagpapakahulugan ng mga datos. Pamamaraang Gagamitin Ang mananaliksik ay gumamit ng paraang deskriptibo o paglalarawan ng mga impormasyon. Napili ang pamamaraang ito dahil nakatutugon ito sa pagtukoy ng epekto ng PUP Confessions sa piling mag aaral ng Sikolohiya sa Poleteknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas. Ang pamamaraan ding ito ay tumugon sa layunin ng pananaliksik.. 48 Paraan ng Pagpili ng Kalahok Ang pamamaraang gagamitin sa pagpili ng kalahok ay Cluster Sampling. Mula sa Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas gagamitin sa pag-aaral ang mga mag-aaral mula sa departamento ng Sikolohiya. Galing sa departamento ng Sikolohiya ay kukuha ng isang pangkat/seksyon sa unang taon at ito ang magiging mga kalahok sa pag-aaral. Gagamitin ng mga mananaliksik ang Cluster Sampling upang makakuha ng datos mula sa unang taon ng mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya. xlviii

49 Deskripsyon ng mga Respondente Ang pananaliksik na ito ay magkakaroon ng mga respondente na galing sa Polyteknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, na nag-aaral ng kursong Sikolohiya. Pumili ang mga mananaliksik ng 30 na mag-aaral sa unang taon mula sa BS Psychology 1-4. Ang paraan na aming ginamit para sa pag-aaral na ito ay convenient sampling. Nakipanayam din kami ng mga mag-aaral na nakapag confess na, nakapag komento at nakapagbabasa sa PUP Confessions. xlix

50 Instrumento Sa aming pananaliksik na Epekto ng PUP Confessions sa piling mag-aaral ng Sikolohiya sa Poleteknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas ay eektibo at angkop na gamitin ang talatanungan na may kasamang panayam. Ito ay upang magkaroon kami ng mas malawak na kaalaman ukol dito. Nagkaroon ng dalawang bahagi ang talatanungan. Ang unang bahagi ay naglalaman ng mga tanong patungkol sa personal na datos ng mag-aaral. Ang pangalawang bahagi naman ay naglalaman ng mga tanong na may kinalaman sa pananaw ng mga mag-aaral sa PUP Confessions. Lahat ng mga tanong ay nakatulong upang bigyang tugon ang mga suliraning inihain sa unang bahagi ng pananaliksik na ito. Ang inihandang tanong ay sasagutin sa pamamaraang Sangayon o Di Sangayon. Nagkaroon din kami ng pagkakataon na makapanayam ang mga nagconfess, mga nag komento at mga nagbabasa ng PUP Confessions na makadadagdag ng malaki sa aming pananaliksik. Kumuha rin kami ng mga impormasyon sa mga libro, internet at dyaryo na talaga naming nakaambag ng malaki sa aming pananaliksik. l

51 Paraan ng Pangangalap ng Datos Ang unang hakbang na isinagawa ng mga mananaliksik ay pangpangangalap ng datos sa iba t ibang silid-aklatan; Ninoy Aquino Learning Resource Center (NALRC), Silid-aklatan ng Kolehiyo ng mga Wika at Linggwistika. Pangalawa ay ang paglikom ng datos mula sa mga websayts sa internet. Upang matugunan ang kina-kailangang impormasyon mula sa mga napiling repondente, ang mga piling mag-aaral mula sa Kagawaran ng Sikolohiya sa Politeknikong Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, angkop na gamitin ng mga mananaliksik na gamitin ang Likert-type na uri ng talatanungan. Sa ganitong uri ng talatanungan, inaasahan ang mga respondente na tumugon, kung ang mga repondente ba ay sumasang-ayon o hindi sumasang-ayon sa mga napiling pahayag ng mga mananaliksik upang patunghayan at mabigyang sagot ang mga suliranin ng pananaliksik. Higit din na makatutulong ang pakikipanayam sa mga dalubhasang mga propesor ng Kolehiyo ng Agham Panlipunan at Pag-unlad. Ang prekwensi at bahagdan ang pinakakaraniwang istadistikal na pamamaraang ginagamit ng isang mananaliksik.
