4 By Carlee Heger Warming Up for a World Championship A Pre-Game Synopsis When I first arrived in Europe, I wasn't really sure what to expect. I had never been to that part of the world, and I wasn't convinced the Duolingo language classes I took on the plane ride over were going to cut it. I got off the plane, still in one piece to my surprise, and although I was tired, I wasn't nearly as jetlagged as I had expected I d be. Kaleb Patterson, Daniel Janes, and Anna Erickson from Warm Beach Vaulters picked me up at the airport. They had arrived in Germany a few days prior to me and were training to compete in Ermelo; Kaleb as an individual at the Junior World Championships and Daniel and Anna as a pas de deux at the 3* CVI. After picking up my bags, we took a 45-minute train ride back from the Munich airport to a little town called Germering. We arrived at our bed and breakfast and I slept. I spent my first full day in Germany walking from one end of Germering to the other and back again. It was nice to loosen up my muscles after the plane ride and to get my first real glimpse of Germany. We did pretty well communicating in German considering none of us spoke the language. There were multiple occasions where we would test ourselves when ordering food, asking a question, or buying something by attempting to speak only in German. I m not sure how authentic we sounded, but we definitely tried. We also went swimming in a nearby lake that was about three kilometers (we also used German distance measurements) from our bed and breakfast. To my surprise, I was actually a little sore the next day from all the walking and swimming. The next day, we headed to the barn in Gilching, which is the next town over from Germering. We spent upward of an hour rolling our muscles out and stretching. (Side note: I cannot express how beneficial rolling was for me while I was in Europe. In just the two weeks I spent training in Germany, I felt significantly more flexible. Rolling was especially important for us since we were working out and training more than usual, and being sore would definitely not have benefited our vaulting.) We tacked up our first horse for the day, Monti. Monti was, and is, one of my favorite horses ever. He is so sweet and so much fun to vault on. Bettina, Monti s lunger and a coach for RVC Gilching (one of the biggest clubs in the world) was there with us. My first practice was solid and it was not nearly as difficult to jump on a new horse as I thought it would be especially when that new horse was Monti. Over the next few days Luke Overton (Warm Beach), Kristian Roberts and Carolyn Bland (both Pacific Coast) joined us in Germany. We spent our off days exploring Munich and playing games. We took the train nearly everywhere and went to see many sights. When we were vaulting, we vaulted mainly on three horses: Kalle, Monti, and Diva, all three of whom we brought with us to the Junior World Championships and the 3* CVI in Ermelo. We also vaulted a lot on the barrel. We all coached one another, which was super helpful, considering that meant there were usually five or more pairs of eyes watching and critiquing our vaulting. We spent many of our off days at the barn, training on the barrel, drilling and working on our compulsories and freestyles. This was incredibly beneficial. Getting something technically correct and solid on the barrel is so important before moving it to the horse, especially when it s a new horse whose canter you re not quite accustomed to. Although our main focus was vaulting while we were there (of course), we had a lot of fun exercising in other ways while we were there, too. One day we went hiking in the Alps near a town called Oberammergau. We climbed to the top of a mountain called Kofel that overlooked the town and the other mountains nearby. We ended the day by celebrating with the best gelato I had ever eaten. We also spent a day challenging ourselves doing a high ropes course with Lars Hansen, a renowned German trainer, and some of the members of the South African team. I spent one evening with Anna while the boys were all in their room downstairs and the parents were chatting on the back porch after a successful vaulting practice. Having stuffed ourselves with the best Indian food ever, Anna and I decided we were going to go for a dusk run. We ran to a nearby lake and, after realizing how sweaty we were when we got there, decided to jump in the lake for a little swim. When in Germany! We ran back with soaking wet clothes. It just might have been my favorite day. After two weeks of adventuring, vaulting, and training, we packed for the Junior World Championships. It was a full day s drive from where we were in Germany to Ermelo, The Netherlands, where the event was being held. We sent the horses in a transport lorry and planned to arrive at the barn at the same time as them. It was there that we met up with the rest of team USA and prepared for what was a very successful, memorable, and fun first ever Junior World Championships. The members of Team USA became really close during the championships. We all hung out and supported each other throughout the entire event, whether by screaming and waving flags any time representatives of the United States of America entered the arena or playing evening volleyball tournaments (I can safely say that most of us should stick to vaulting). It was truly one of the best experiences of my life, and I encourage any vaulter who one day hopes to go to a World Championship to keep pursuing their dreams and remember that hard work really does pay off. 5 Team USA Squad The Squad BRONZE MEDAL Woodside Vaulters The Wizard of Oz Coaches: Erica Meitz, Mari Inouye Smith, Samantha Matson, Alicen Divita Horses: Stanford (USA), Ghost Alfarvad Z (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lunger: Krista Mack (USA), Lasse Kristensen (Ermelo) Audrey Kiernan, 13 San Mateo, CA The Tin Man Tessa Divita, 18 Woodside, CA Glinda the Good Witch We learned that there are always going to be bumps in the road when you are trying to reach a goal, but that how you deal with them is the most important part. I loved getting to meet vaulters from around the world and making new friends. Earning our bronze medal was also definitely a highlight. Sarah Dunn, 18 Palo Alto, CA The Scarecrow I learned a lot about trusting myself and my team. It's easy to feel overwhelmed in the arena, but you have to believe that you and your team have done all the work and are capable of performing your best routine. My favorite moment from Junior Worlds was when we first arrived and were practicing in the competition arena. I loved how excited and focused everyone was, and even though we were nervous, we al so felt strong and prepared. I think one of my main lessons from Junior Worlds was the importance of communication. Since we were on a new horse there were many sticky parts in our freestyle, and I think constructive communication really helped us through. I really enjoyed bonding with my team and Michelle Guo and Bodhi Hall while training in Jelling, Denmark. It was fun meeting new people from around the world, and I loved watching the videos each nation made about vaulting in their countries. Siddartha Kreaden, 17 Sunnyvale, CA The Wicked Witch Strive for perfection, even if things don't go your way. Hard work pays off! My favorite moment was when the team found out that we had placed third and we were going to go home with the bronze; it was surreal. Rachel Polati, 18 Emerald Hills, CA Dorothy Don t take even the little things for granted. Looking back at Junior Worlds, the best parts are the silly things that went on behind the scenes. For example, our weirdness would come out right before we ran out into the arena. My favorite moment from Junior Worlds would probably have to be when I stood on the podium with my team and our lunger, and the FEI Bronze medal was placed around our necks. That was the moment when everything became so real and proved that our hard work had paid off. Miki Yang, 11 Los Altos Hills, CA The (Not So) Cowardly Lion Just go for it! Seeing everyone s faces upon arriving in Ermelo, especially those of friends and friends-to-be from different countries. 6 How long have you been together as a pas de deux pair? This was our first year working together as a pas de deux pair, but we have been on teams together for the past four years. Describe the process of putting together your freestyle this year. The theme for Jailhouse Rock came to us quickly; we loved the swing theme from our team in 2013 and wanted to vault to upbeat music from the same era. The uniforms were also an easy, albeit unconventional, piece of the puzzle. You may have heard that the "jeans" from our homemade uniforms came from a local drugstore. The routine itself evolved tremendously throughout the season. The original routine consisted of a combination of moves we were both trying for the first time and ones we had done either together or separately in our prior team routines. That original routine was poked and prodded at all season. We were always tweaking little things to figure out what worked smoothly and what didn't. By the time we got to Denmark to train with Lasse and Jarl, we changed our routine even more. Without all the input and change, our routine would not have been nearly as smooth and put together as it ended up being! Michelle Guo, 17 Palo Alto, CA Though we experienced trouble in the beginning, we shifted our focus in the middle of the season and committed to vaulting for ourselves, to show off and have fun. As it turns out, Bodhi and I are much more successful when we keep lighthearted, playful mindsets in the competition ring. That's what kept the nerves at bay in Ermelo and was a key factor to our success. Finally getting to eat ice cream (we had been avoiding sweets) after our second round reminded me of the little steps in our journey. We shared that moment with our families and I felt so much gratitude to everyone who helped us get there. Though Junior Worlds was a goal that took tremendous dedication and hard work to reach, we didn't wear serious faces all the time. I reflected on all the fun we had throughout the season and appreciated the special dynamic I share with Bodhi. Plans for the 2015/16 Vaulting Season: I had a lot of fun doing pas de deux. I find that it combines the best parts of individual and team vaulting, helping me almost to recharge. I'm not sure where my goals stand right now, but I would definitely do pas de deux again for the fun and thrill of it. WORLD CHAMPIONS Michelle Guo & Bodhi Hall Mt. Eden Vaulting Club Jail House Rock Coaches: Emma Seely, Laura Yelavich, Samantha Matson Horses: Sunny Boy, Pino Del Rio (USA), Jarl (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lunger: Laura Yelavich, Julie Divita (USA), Lasse Kristensen (Ermelo) Bodhi Hall, 15 San José, CA My favorite memory from this past vaulting season was discovering we had qualified for the Junior World Championships after a rather rough selection period. I was by our horse trailer with some of our club's coaches when Michelle ran up to me with the great news. Hard work pays off. My favorite moment at Junior Worlds was running our victory lap with Lasse after we won overall. I will never forget how excited our parents and the rest of Team USA looked in the stands. I don't think the smiles left our faces for the remainder of our stay in The Netherlands. I am not yet sure what is in store for this year, but I am very excited to find out! BRONZE MEDAL Sarah Dunn & Janie Salisbury Woodside Vaulters Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies (Nutcracker) Coaches: Isab elle Parker, Elizabeth Osborn, Erica Meitz, Mari Smith Horses: Stanford (USA), Ghost Alfarvad Z (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lunger: Krista Mack (USA), Lasse Kristensen (Ermelo) How long have you been together as a pas de deux pair? We ve been doing pas de deux together for the past two years. Describe the process of putting together your freestyle this year. Going into our partnership, we knew our strengths and weaknesses as a pair, so we tried to show off our strengths as best we could. This year we had a bit of an advantage, since we had a year of vaulting together under our belts. We also kept many of our moves from last year and built off of them. In creating our freestyle, we considered a lot of different factors, including but not limited to: changing levels, changing basing positions, having moments for choreography, and using our various strengths. Once we had the skeleton of our routine we spent a lot of time trying out different themes and seeing how they worked with the routine we put together. We finally settled on The Nutcracker because the music allowed us to focus on the execution of our moves while performing to the music. Team USA Pas de Deux Janie Salisbury, 16 Atherton, CA Don t doubt yourself and definitely do trust your horse and partner. If you are confident about trying a new move, most likely it will work, but if you are scared and doubt yourself, then most likely it will not. My favorite moment from Junior Worlds was competing our second round freestyle. It went cleanly and it was just really fun to do! It also was a bittersweet moment, though, because I knew that it would be my last time on the horse with Sarah, since she was heading off to college. This year, I am doing a pas de deux with another girl from Woodside Vaulters and I am also focusing on individuals and really trying to improve my compulsories. Sarah Dunn, 18 Palo Alto, CA Last season taught me about how to focus in on a goal and work diligently toward it. All of last year was devoted to getting to and doing our best at Junior Worlds, and going through a season with that in mind taught me a lot about teamwork and determination. My favorite moment at Junior Worlds was probably right before Janie and I ran into the arena for the first time. We were both incredibly nervous but knew that we had a ton of support and were 100% ready to do our best. That anticipation and excitement was definitely the hallmark of my entire Junior Worlds experience. Plans for 2015/16 Vaulting Season: I am not going to be competing this season. I moved to Massachusetts for college, and I am focusing on school. Photos courtesy of Daniel Kaiser Impressions JW10 EquestrianVaultinG Volume 47, Issue 2 JW11

7 Team USA Women 8TH PLACE Tessa Divita, 18 Portola Valley, CA Woodside Vaulters Dear Future Husband by Meghan Trainor Coaches: Julie Divita, Kristian Roberts, Samantha Matson, Emma Seely, Carolyn Bland, Mari Inouye Smith, Erica Meitz Horse: Pino Del Rio (USA & Ermelo, Netherlands) Lunger: Julie Divita (USA & Ermelo, Netherlands) I had individual training on the horse two or three times a week, once a week at Garrod Farms and the other times at Pacific Coast Vaulters. I did a conditioning class twice a week, and I had gymnastics practice twice a week. I spent the three weeks leading up to Junior Worlds in Jelling, Denmark training at the Thommysminde barn, owned by Lasse Kristensen. I vaulted three days a week on Pino, and worked out with my squad, Bodhi Hall, and Michelle Guo. I love vaulting because I love the vaulting community, nationally and internationally. I also love bonding with my equine and human partners. The vaulting community is amazing and supportive beyond belief. There are lots of wonderful people who are willing to do whatever it takes to help you succeed. My favorite moments were when I got to watch and cheer for the rest of team USA, especially Bodhi and Michelle's Gold Medal-winning Pas de Deux. I am currently in my senior year of high school, and I m focusing on the college application process. I am also training for the 2016 Senior World Championships. 9TH PLACE Michelle Guo, 17 Palo Alto, CA Mt. Eden Vaulting Club Arabian Nights Coach: Emma Seely Horses: Palatine, Charles, Vermeer, Lanson 16, Pino Del Rio (USA), Jarl (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lungers: Carolyn Bland, Saacha DeAmborossio, Emma Seely, Julie Divita (USA), Lasse Kristensen (Ermelo, Netherlands) About four hours a week of horse practice was dedicated to individuals, and I trained on many different horses. I worked with an acrobatic gymnastics coach on the composition of my routine in the beginning of the season and built confidence through repetition towards the end. I spent a week and a half at Lasse Kristensen's place in Denmark, training alongside the American squad. Emma and Lasse helped me work out the small kinks and finalize my routine on Jarl. When choosing music and a theme, make sure they will come across to international judges and a broader audience. I love the community. Even though our sport is growing rapidly, it is still small enough to allow each vaulter opportunities that may not be as accessible through other sports, such as world champion clinicians and international training camps. Adaptability is crucial. During competition season, I competed on six different horses, a scenario that I could not have imagined while in the training period. Thankfully, Emma Seely, my coach, has always emphasized the importance of being able to vault on any horse, a philosophy that prepared me for the surprises that came up this season. After my last round, I felt all sorts of emotions standing on the kiss-and-cry podium. I was grateful for the opportunity to compete in Ermelo, a little sad that that had been my last time in the ring for individuals, and incredibly excited when my final scores lit up on the screen. It was an experience like no other. As I'm in my last year of vaulting, I hope to attend the 2016 World Championships as part of a squad. 14TH PLACE Siddartha Kreaden, 17 Sunnyvale, CA Woodside Vaulters Maleficent Coach: Elizabeth Osborn Horses: Pepper Jack, Agado, Stanford (USA), Ramstein (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lungers: Joan Williams, Krista Mack (USA), Lasse Kristensen (Ermelo, Netherlands) Throughout the year, I trained twice a week on the horse, and twice in the gym. I practiced on about three different horses throughout the season. In Europe, I trained on Ramstein three times a week. Each practice, I did a combination of compulsories as well as running my freestyle at least once. Aside from training on the horse, I did a ton of barrel work and gym workouts with my team. Train hard, and have trust in your body. Don't take yourself too seriously; have fun! The feeling of standing on top of a horse is exhilarating. I love challenging myself by trying out new moves and perfecting them. I also love performing, and having dramatic themes. Even when things don t go as planned, don't give up. Stay confident, and trust yourself. My favorite moment from Worlds must have been running into the arena with Ramstein and Lasse for freestyle. This year, I am taking a break from team and focusing on individuals. I'll be off to university as of next season, so I'm just trying to have fun this year. Alternate Carlee Heger, 15 Fort Collins, CO Mile High Vaulters At the Beach Coach: Jodi Rinard Horse: Xena (USA) Lungers: Jodi Rinard (USA) Lots of cross training! Gymnastics, hiking, body weight workouts, running, etc! Also a lot of run-throughs! We did a lot of barrel practice and a lot of getting used to the new horses we were on. We also did some cross training (mostly for fun) such as swimming and running. Never worry about setting your goals too high! You never know what you're going to be able to accomplish with hard work and dedication! I love to vault because it gives me so many opportunities in life where I can meet new people, travel to new places, and have new experiences. DON T LOSE YOUR NUMBER!!! I think my favorite part of Junior Worlds was meeting new people and making friends from all around the world. Plans for the 2015/16 Vaulting Season: Next year I am setting my sights on seniors! Competing internationally is one of the best parts of vaulting, so you should try and do whatever it takes to make it happen: fundraising, extra practices, sacrificing free time. Also, do not be intimidated by the international competitors; they are just friends you haven't met yet. (I compete in Level 10.) I also train on the horse and barrel three days a week. I run and go to the gym to lift weights as well. When I'm not at a vaulting competition or gymnastics competition, I'm racing my motorcycle. How did you train in Europe right before I trained every day with Maurits and Cindy de Vries in the Netherlands. We trained a lot on the barrel as well as on Zygo. I also vaulted on their other vaulting horses. What s your advice for up-andcoming Try your hardest and don't give up. I love the challenge. It's exciting and fun to compete in Europe. I also like meeting and hanging out with the European vaulters. The lesson I learned is that hard work pays off in the long run, so be the best you can be. My favorite moment was after my freestyle. I was so happy with my performance and score. I was third in both freestyles! Sometimes you feel good about your go but the score says otherwise. This time both came together. I plan to compete in the World Cup in November and at some international CVIs in the spring. Also, I plan to try out for the Senior World Championships next year. I am graduating from high school and will be attending a university in the fall. 14TH PLACE Luke Overton, 16 Stanwood, WA Warm Beach Vaulters I See Fire by Ed Sheran Coaches: Kimberly Bell, Anna Erickson Horses: Prize (USA), Kalle (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lungers: Kimberly Bell (USA), Carolyn Bland (Ermelo, Netherlands) I did my regular vaulting program, which involves lots of barrel work, weight training, rolling out, stretching, and gymnastics. Training in Europe involved regular practice on the horse I was borrowing, daily stretching, and barrel work. We trained once with Lars Hansen [renowned German trainer and coach of the South African vaulting team] on his mechanical barrel. Start saving. Attend as many clinics as you can. Work with other vaulters, coaches, and judges to improve. If you don't normally train on a Warmblood, get as much experience as you can get before borrowing one in Europe. I love all aspects of the sport the physical workout, the friendships, the partnership with the horse, and the challenge to improve my vaulting. Hard work pays off. Always keep trying. Representing the USA was an amazing opportunity and a wonderful feeling. My favorite moment was meeting and talking with Jacques Ferrari, the 2014 Men s Vaulting World Champion. My plans are to master the technical test so I can compete at the Gold level and to continue to train for the next Junior World Championships. 16TH PLACE Kaleb Patterson, 17 Stanwood, WA Warm Beach Vaulters I Have a Dream Coaches: Kimberly Bell, Anna Erickson Horses: Prize (USA), Amontillado 9 (Ermelo, Netherlands) Lungers: Kimberly Bell (USA), Bettina Groß (Ermelo, Netherlands) I trained four days per week on the horse. I also spent 20+ hours each week training on the barrel and cross training with disciplines like yoga, jogging, P90X, and gymnastics. I trained outside of Munich, Germany for two and a half weeks leading up to the Championships. I trained every other day on the horse and every day on the barrel and the ground with a heavy focus on stretching. My advice is to push yourself harder than you can imagine. It doesn't matter where you come from or how much money you have. Truly set your mind and your life to the goal, and you will go a long way. Also, if you're a guy, STRETCH! I love to vault because of the friendships I have made and continue to make around the country and around the world. I also love being able to combine athleticism with artistry and then adding a horse to that. Anything I set my mind to is possible, but only if my attitude reflects the same. My favorite single moment was being in the arena after having a great compulsory round, because the energy of the arena with eight judges and a plethora of spectators was unlike anything I had experienced before. Overall, though, meeting fellow vaulters from around the world and competing alongside them was the best part of the competition. This coming year my goal is to qualify for the Senior World Vaulting Championships in France. Photos courtesy of Daniel Kaiser Impressions JW14 EquestrianVaultinG Volume 47, Issue 2 JW15
