The two-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier and perennial leading aged event riders from Dublin, Texas, swept first through third and placed seventh in the $50,000-added Futurity and won first and fourth in the slot futurity for $77,951. Making the feat more impressive is that she did it while recovering from six broken spinous processes after she was kicked in the back in late February. She ran at the Elite Extravaganza, placing on two horses including a reserve championship on Epic Guy just two weeks after the incident sent her to the emergency room. They say that Tony Romo played football just two weeks after breaking just one, laughed Mowry. I m like, Here, hold my beer! When you have horses like these, you do whatever you can to do them justice! At Diamonds & Dirt, Mowry and Dashing Canelo took top honors in the Futurity, earning $24,307. She won the futurity reserve championship and the slot race championship on Kristen William s homebred Epic Guy for $33,405. Michael Boone s Famous Ladies Man, bred by Busby Quarter Horses, carried her to third and $9,177. Her fourth horse, CP He Will Be Epic, bred by Claire Powell, was seventh in the futurity and fourth in the slot race, earning $11,062. Mowry purchased Canelo as a baby from his breeder and her good friend Karma Loflin, with whom she bred the great Epic Leader. Canelo is by all-time leading barrel horse sire Dash Ta Fame out of the great producing mare Streakin Sider, by Streakin Six. Streakin Sider is the dam of pro rodeo winner So Epic, owned by Sidney Forrest, and multiple pro rodeo winner Stitchs StreakNFame, owned by Andrea Cline. After being started under saddle by Justin Arnold as were all her money earners in Waco Canelo was patterned by Boone, who had the gelding loping the barrels by the fall of his second year. After Canelo s break during the winter, Mowry started riding him in the spring of his third year. Both of us realized he was very talented, said Mowry. Michael really thought he was something special, but I didn t know if I could ride him. He was different from the very beginning. His natural way of turning was different from everything else that I had ridden. He wanted to turn with his head really low, and unlike most of the Dash Ta Fame s he didn t want to bury up at a barrel. 2 Diamonds & Dirt Continued From Page 1 doesn t have a lot of rate. He wants to hammer down, so I spent a lot of time working to back him off. Since Canelo was very bold and very forward, Mowry named him as her Super Stakes horse for Oklahoma City. While the gelding worked well, he had some issues with the ground. That was a huge setback for his confidence, Mowry added. She ended up changing his back shoes to include a wedge to help him standup better after radiographs showed he needed his angles changed. Canelo was also the horse that slipped on the concrete and fell into Mowry, breaking her ankle. So, with limited ability and strength to ride, Mowry battled her way through the winter and early spring futurities with little saddle time in between due to her personal injuries. I actually had two weeks before Diamonds & Dirt to ride, she said. I was really happy to have some time to ride at home and go to a couple of jackpots. I was really beginning to worry. Every time I rode them it was for a futurity or a slot race. I was worried that they wouldn t be able to mentally take it. That s just a testament to how good minded these horses are. It s an awesome feeling that they ve held it together. They just love to go do it. During those two weeks, Mowry was able to find the right bit for Canelo, too. I almost didn t enter him, reflected Mowry. After a couple of jackpots, he got a lot better, really fast. I knew I had the right equipment. I knew his feet were right. It s awesome to have him come back around. With Canelo s inconsistency prior to Diamonds & Dirt, Mowry had entered her to Epic Leaders in the slot race. The eventual winner Epic Guy ( King ) has been solid from day one, said Mowry. He s placed everywhere I ve taken him, she said. He just walks in the arena and then go does his thing. He thinks it s the most fun thing ever. Bred by Williams, King is out of the Frenchmans Guy mare Frenchilicious, who is out of a Rackum On Man daughter. Mowry started riding the gelding in February of his third year after Arnold broke him to ride. Next up for Mowry is the Kim Landry Benefit Futurity in Abilene, Texas. Mowry, who is still pretty sore, but is no longer in constant pain, plans on riding all her horses there. She s had all-time leading futurity rider Troy Crumrine jump ride for her at both the Elite Futurity and Diamonds & Dirt. I m just falling apart, she chuckled. Most of the therapy has been on me and not my horses! I really couldn t have done any of this without Michael. He rode them a couple of times for me at the house. He s been going and helping me at the futurities. 45 Hallie Hanssen and Mean Cheerleader Win Sand Cup By Amy Wilson Hallie Hanssen and a pair of 4 year old grey mares dominated Special Leader the 2019 Sand Cup Futurity and Slot Race in Moses Lake, Washington. Confederate Leader si 103 Hanssen, who is from Hermosa, South Dakota, rode Mean Southern Streaker Cheerleader to a second place finish in round one with Epic Leader si 93 and first place in round two with for the Futurity Average Championship. They also won the Futurity Slot Race after running Fire Water Flit Firewater Fiesta si 86 the fastest time of the futurity with In the first round she had some mistakes, Hanssen said. In the second round she really Mighty Mindy made a solid run and kind of cleaned up some of the mistakes she had in the first run, but I wasn t expecting a.2. I know that mare Mean Cheerleader can really clock because she s really fast and can cover the ground, 2015 Gray Filly but I was surprised it was that fast. Because Mean Cheerleader has Six Fols so much run, Hanssen made a bit change for the weekend, which Marthas Six Moons si 90 she doesn t normally do. She ll get to running to the first pretty si 99 Lady Bugs Martha hard and kind of go by it once in awhile so I put a bit in her mouth instead of an o-ring to try to help that, she explained. As far as going thing. It s well ran and on time. She continued, It has good money around the barrels, I might take her around them a couple times a week just it s a good event to go to. Thankfully she had her husband, Lee, there to help with everything. We had six horses entered last weekend and there were sponsors: ESMS, Saddleright, Omega Fields, Platinum Coach, Tami Semas to keep her sharp. 93 in the futurity so when we have them that close together, he s Barrel Saddles, Flexineb, UltraCruz, Bimeda, Cowgirl Tuff, Flaharty Bits, MVP warming one up and then I come back and get on it, she explained. Since we ride together everyday, he knows the horses just as well as I do so it s a good partnership. For Hanssen, there is a little adjusting when riding two horses that are built very differently. Mean Cheerleader is a big mare and more of a free runner than the Wicked Little Leader, who s little and really turny. You do have to ride them a little bit different but I feel like when you train them it gives you an advantage, she said. It s all muscle memory for Hanssen as she tries to always keep their spots the same. In fact, the key element to her training program is repetition and consistency. By training her colts to go to the same spots every time, and riding with her hands and seat the same no matter what speed she s going, Hanssen uses that consistency to build confidence in her horses. Hopefully if I do my part and ride the same, they ll do their s. When you train that many and are jumping on them, you just have to hope that they rely on your training and what you showed them, she said. Although Mean Cheerleader and Wicked Little Leader have different styles partially due to their size, they share the same sire, Epic Leader, who Hanssen believes passes on the desire to have that forward motion. Mean Cheerleader, owned by Jennifer Cook, is out of Mean Dorene, who s by Marthas Six Moons. Wicked Little Leader, owned by Isabella Quarter Horses, is out of Miss Diabolique. Hanssen prefers to ride behind a cutting horse trainer who puts a good foundation on a young horse, which was exactly the case for Mean Cheerleader. Everything is pretty easy for her, even with her size and growing, it never seemed to affect her, Hanssen said about training her on the barrels. She loves you to pet her and she s a very personable horse. She always loves attention so she s enjoyable to have around because she likes people, she added. Hanssen believes the most important aspect when selecting a prospect is pedigree. Of course there are some horses that become winners that aren t name brand, but she says that your odds increase with proven bloodlines, especially when you ride a prospect out of a proven producing mare. Her grandparents brought one of the first own son s of Easy Jet and one of the first own son s of Dash For Cash to South Dakota. My grandpa and grandma used to raise a lot of horses. I remember going out to their ranch and they d have a hundred and some horses the different groups of mares with the studs. They always pasture bred everything, Hanssen said. So that ll be fun to ride them, she said. I was born into it and I love the breeding part of it and raising the babies everything from halter breaking to starting them on the barrels. Hanssen and Lee spend the winter in Texas, and try to get back Sand Cup Futurity April 2-7, 2019, Moses Lake, WA to South Dakota in February before the mares start foaling, but when they left for the Sand Cup, her parents, who live on the same place as them, take care of everything. When we re gone, my parents are back home foaling mares, Hanssen said with appreciation as she continues her family s legacy.
