3 Polar Expeditions Summary: All aboard for a Polar Expedition! It is time to learn all about the Arctic. Enjoy making igloos, snowstorms, and creating friendships with some furry friends. We will be taking a polar plunge for indoor swim days and embarking on field trips to the North and South poles of Austin! Table Of Contents Opening & Closing Ceremonies Transitions Skits and Songs Arts and Craft Activities Organized Games CATCH Games Character Development Week Long Project

4 Opening & Closing Ceremonies Opening Ceremonies/Closing Ceremonies Opening Ceremonies Song/Chant/Cheer Pledge-Can be made on your own or can change the Sports pledge Call to Order-Tribes, Herds, etc. are accounted for by call Daily Announcements-Go over what is happening that day End Cheer-This cheer will signal the closing of the Opening Ceremonies Daily Closing Ceremonies Song/Chant/Cheer (Same as Opening Ceremonies) Call to order (Same as Opening Ceremonies) Daily Recognitions-Give recognition to children each day. For example, you might give the best line leader, best helper, or best bubble. End Cheer (Same as Closing Ceremonies) End of Week Ceremony on Fridays Same as Daily Closing Ceremonies, but we would like a Big Award Ceremony, with actual awards paper or something that is physical that you design. For example, you can give out badges similar to Boy Scouts. These awards can be creative such as Most Energetic, Loudest Laugh, and Most Creative.

5 Transitions Transition Activities Letter Hunt: Call out a letter and ask your children to identify objects around the room that begin with that letter. Guess the animal: Have one student stand up and let the other kids guess which animal he or she is thinking of. Whoever gets it correct first goes next. Round Robin Game: Start with a topic (colors, types of fruit, animals, etc) and go back and forth with your campers naming a color until no one can think of any more. Try it with other topics too (four-legged animals, types of fruit, etc.). Verbal Memory Game: Give your camper a short list of items (3-6 depending on the age of your child). Then have them recite the items in order. The Mirror Game Stand in front of your class and tell them to pretend that they are your mirror. Put your arm out to the side, they do the same. Stretch your arm over your head, spin in a circle, do a couple of jumping jacks, touch your toes, make funny faces, etc. If anybody starts talking you simply say, remember boys and girls, mirrors don t have voices so I shouldn t hear any sound. Once they get it, choose a student to come to the front and lead the movements. This could be a special privilege for someone that s been a good listener.

Trace and cut two holes in the paper plate for the eyes. 2. Use the fruit cup from morning snack for the snout. 3. Paint the clear fruit cups with white acrylic paint and let them dry completely. They may require 2 coats of paint. 4. While the snout is drying, put glue onto a section of the paper plate and then place white crumpled tissue paper squares all over the glue. Do this on every section until the paper plate is covered. 5. Cut out two ears using white construction paper and glue them to the back of the plate. 6. Once the snout is dry, draw a bear mouth on the bottom of the cup with a black permanent marker. 7. Use a glue gun to run glue around the bottom rim of the cup and glue it down onto the polar bear face. Also use the hot glue gun to glue on the black pom nose. 8. To finish the mask, simply punch holes onto the sides of the paper plate and tie a knot on each end with a piece of string or yarn.

Glue popsicle sticks to the paper plate, glue tan circles on top of the sticks and then glue tan yarn to the circles to make a mustache. Add googly eyes and nose.

14 Organized Games Circle Game: I m Going on an Expedition The first person starts the game by saying,"i'm going on an expedition and I'm taking..." That person starts with the letter "A". The second person repeats the first part of the sentence, repeats what the first person is bringing and then adds something starting with the letter "B". This continues around with everyone starting with the first part of the sentence and repeating what the previous people brought and adding the next letter of the alphabet. To add a little more fun, make every letter into a tongue twister. "I'm going on an expedition and I'm bringing Aunt Annie's absolutely awesome apples!" You can also play, where each person brings an object that starts with the first letter of their name to make it a fun name game! Gym Game: Polar Bears, Wolves & Seals Split group up into 2 teams, designate 2 safety zones, one on each team s side, and designate a middle area. Each team then gets in a huddle and picks what they want to be as a team, a polar bear, a wolf or a seal. Polar Bears stand with their hands up over their head and growl, wolves put their hands our straight in front of them and howling, and seals put their arms to their side and arf. Once the teams have decided their character they want to be, they come up to the center spot and line up face to face, then on a count of 3, everyone does whatever action their team picked. Polar Bears beat Wolves, Wolves beat Seals and Seals beat Polar Bears, so the team that beats the winning team chases the other and tries to tag as many members on the other team as possible before they reach the safety zone. The members from the team that get tagged become a part of the other team. Repeat until all players are on one side.

15 Organized Games Indoor Game: What s the Object? This is a simple game which requires good describing skills. Children should be organized into teams (with approximately three children per team). One child from each team should be given a card. They should then try to describe what is on the card, but they are not allowed to use the words which are written on the card. Use things you would find on the Polar Express Train for the words on the card. Indoor Game: Polar Bear Club 1.Gather the group in a circle around a table or on the floor of a building. 2.Tell the group that you belong to a club called the Polar Bear Club, and anyone who figures out the secret code can join too. 3.Then recite this poem: Polar Bears, Polar Bears, gather around the ice hole In the days of Genghis Kahn. The game is in the name; the name is in the game How many Polar Bears do you see? 4.Roll the dice, the group must figure how many Polar Bears are before them. 5.The trick is that an ice hole is a dot in the center (the position of the dot on the 1 face) of the die; the Polar Bears are any dots surrounding the center dot. Any die that does not have an ice hole does not have Polar Bears 6.For instance, if you roll a 3 and a 6, there would be two Polar Bears, because there is one center dot (ice hole) on a 3 face with two dots (Polar Bears) surrounding and no center dots (ice hole) with therefore no Polar Bears on the 6 face. Requirements: One Dice

23 Character Development Bucket-filler Friday - Take time once a week to have students encourage each other. This could be via written notes or circle time to give each other compliments. Recipe for Success - Students post "ingredients" for the recipe of what good character looks like. You could do a group brainstorming session or have children write and draw their recipes. If space allows, make a bulletin board with the ideas. Make It Mine - Let kids define character traits in their own words and share an example of someone they know who displays that positive characteristic. Puppet Role Play - Use puppets to have students act out a conflict and resolution. This can also give insight into the interpersonal issues your students are facing. Growing Gratitude - Use the door of your classroom to build a paper tree or flower and put things your class is grateful for on the branches or stem. Make it a weekly activity. Walk in my Shoes - Trace feet and stand in someone else's footprint while discussing examples of empathy. Button Pushing - Cultivate a classroom culture that identifies "buttons" that cause stress or anger and have students work toward avoiding button pushing. Interactive Character Notebook - Compile ideas for handling anger or bullying, as well as suggestions for acts of kindness and how to show a teacher respect. Review the notebook on a regular basis to reinforce good behavior. A Bad Case of the Stripes - This book by David Shannon is a great jumping off point for talking about individuality, and incorporating other character issues. Workplace Ethics - Many older elementary programs incorporate a unit on business ownership or careers, and this is a great time to talk about the idea of ethics and good business character.
