While this camp is like many others across the nation, this has been an opportunity for me to learn from many collegiate-level coaches. Each morning of camp, I was able to attend the UGA swim team practices, which feature some of the fastest swimmers and most knowledgeable coaches in the country. Over the trip, I was able to observe and work with many swimmers that have competed and place in the top 8 of the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships. Like the first five summers, I came away with new drills, sets, and coaching ideas. When I returned from Georgia, we were notified of an exciting opportunity for one of our very own. Coach Jenny has been named the Head Swim Coach for the Hoffman Estates High School Men s Swim Team. While coaching for Hoffman, Coach Jenny will also be working full time for the high school. With that said, Coach Jenny will not be able to coach with PPD on a regular basis beginning in the fall. Although we would selfishly like for Jenny to be around more, I would like to say huge thank you and congratulations to her on such an outstanding opportunity. As the summer season continues to fly by, we ve had some very successful meets at Munster, Birchwood, and Fishers, finishing first and second at our two away meets. Congratulations to everyone involved. It takes a complete team effort when traveling to an invitational and being able to finish so well in the standings when competing against teams from all over the Midwest. As always, a huge thanks to our volunteers and parent board for their continued support and countless time and efforts to make our meets some of the best run in the state. With the Splash less than two weeks away, we are looking forward to another smooth weekend and positive atmosphere. With championship season right around the corner, the coaching staff is working with the groups to position themselves in a situation to have fun and swim fast. Between the weeks of July 17 th and August 3 rd, PPD will have representation at Sectionals, Regionals, Age Group State, Senior Champs, and Zones. It will be a busy and productive time for families, swimmers, and coaches alike. Good luck to all the Tiger Sharks heading into the start of everyone s favorite time of the season. LINOIS

2 JULY 2014! PAGE 2 PRESIDENT Volunteerism The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Some of you might be dreading our upcoming Summer Splash as just another meet where you have to time, marshall, or work concessions etc. I challenge you to think about volunteering at a swim meet as much more. Think of this as your offer to help the greater community as a whole. You might think I am crazy when I say that when I volunteer to officiate a swim meet, I actually think of it as serving others. I serve other kids by helping them swim better. I serve the coaches by helping them coach better. I serve our non-profit community team, along with many other volunteers who do not receive any pay for working shifts throughout the day. For example, our last swim meet brought in over $23,000 net to our non-profit community swim team. There is no way we would be able to pull off this kind of profit if we had to pay officials or timers to work our meets. Since you all so graciously volunteer, the income our team receives is as high as it could possibly be. Hence, we are able to keep our fees as one of the lowest in the entire Northwest Suburbs because we make such a profit in our 3-4 meets per year. When our fees are low, it allows our entire community of kids to participate in our swim program. It also allows us to offer scholarships to those who cannot afford to pay. In addition, when our kids are swimming, they are not wandering the parks or malls and they are staying out of trouble. So when you commit to volunteer at our next meet, the Summer Splash, consider adding another session to work above your requirement. Not because you have a kid in that session, but because you want to help the team and the greater community with your volunteerism. Lose yourself in the service of others. Enjoy! 3 JULY 2014! PAGE 3 TREASURER REPORT It was great to see everyone who came to EB registration, we may have set a record number of registrants that night. To everyone who volunteered at our hosted meet during the Short Course season, THANK YOU! Our tradition of hosting smoothly run meets was continued. We will be hosting two home meets at Birchwood pool during the LC season, the Father s Day Frenzy in June and the Summer Splash in July. Besides being fun filled weekends for our hard working swimmers and our visitors, the meets provide income for our team, helping keep our swim teams fees as low as possible. The income from these two meets are a large part of the income budgeted for this season. Besides needing the weather to cooperate on those weekends, we also need every family to volunteer in some way. For every session that you have a swimmer swimming, an adult needs to volunteer. If you ever have any questions regarding any of the finances of the team, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to go over the financial statements with you. Please come to the monthly board meetings to learn and ask questions.
