The City of Glasgow ROLL OF HONOUR of The Great War

First published 1922 Reprint published 2011 Second edition The Scottish Military Research Group

Introduction When the Roll of Honour for the City of Glasgow was first published in 1922, no-one would have foreseen the interest there would be across the world, ninety years later, in the names inscribed upon it. For those living or working in the City of Glasgow, access to the Roll is relatively easy. The original Roll is kept in the City Chambers in George Square, and another copy is available to view in The Mitchell Library. For those outside the city, and indeed outside of Scotland, access was only available if you happened to visit, or knew a friendly local who would check a name for you. It was for this reason that the Scottish Military Research Group took the decision to transcribe the original roll and make it available to a greater audience. The original publication is almost as you see it here, with some minor differences the decision was taken to split the address into it respective components. This was done to make searching for a particular location easier. The original Roll had a short section of additional names, which had been added after the initial completion of the Roll these have now been incorporated into the main body of the Roll. With the passage of time since it was first published, the identification of errors in the Roll becomes increasingly more difficult. We have therefore decided that, barring any obvious glaring errors, it is best to leave it as originally published. Any errors in the original text are as they were input almost ninety years ago. Any errors we may have made in our transcription are of course our fault and we will endeavour to amend these when they are brought to our attention. The only column of the original text which has in any way changed is the Unit section many regiments were input to the Roll under several different names and abbreviations we have tidied these and applied a standard version to ease searching for a particular unit. To quote an example: where the original Roll had examples of both Black Watch and Royal Highlanders these are all now listed under Black Watch. Similarly, any listings for Royal Navy ships are now prefixed Royal Navy and then the ship s name. Since publication many streets in Glasgow have changed their names as outlying villages have been incorporated into the city should you wish to know the current name of a street I suggest visiting Douglas Brown s excellent index of renamed Glasgow Streets

The task of transcribing and checking this Roll was a collaborative effort over a number of years, and several people deserve heartfelt thanks for their efforts. The late Kevin O Neill undertook a mammoth task in transcribing large sections of the Roll. Sadly Kevin sadly passed away before it could be completed. The completed Roll is therefore dedicated to his memory. David McNay and Adam Brown also assisted with the transcribing, as well as checking the completed pages before publication. Charlie McDonald provided assistance with certain sections and provided clarification on a number of points. The members of the, Scottish Military Research Group, in particular those working on the War Memorials Project, deserve our thanks for their moral support and assistance. The final thanks go to the men listed within these pages: without their sacrifice the world would be a different place. They deserve to be remembered, and in these pages they live on.

Foreword to the original 1922 edition In the Autumn of 1915 the Corporation, on the motion of Councillor Robert Macnab, remitted a special committee to arrange for the preparation of a Roll of Honour of the citizens of Glasgow who had lost, or might thereafter lose, their lives in the great war which had then been in progress for rather more than a year. The initial concern of the committee in carrying out the remit was how they were to collect the names and other details necessary for making up the proposed Roll. They first of all sought to obtain these from the authentic records in the hands of naval, military, and other official authorities, but inquiry showing this to be impracticable, Sir John Lindsay, Town Clerk, and his assistant, Mr J J Elliott, who had the more immediate charge of the matter, at once proceeded, by urgent appeal through the local press and also by direct communication, to get into touch with employers of labour, churches of every denomination and creed, large educational institutions, and various boards and public bodies in the City and neighbourhood. From these and other sources the required information began to be received, and a register was started, which, with a supplementary list of names gleaned from casualty reports in the newspapers, developed by slow degrees in the Roll, of which a print will be found in the following pages. Some time after the conclusion of the war a proof copy of the Roll was, for a period of nearly two months, exhibited in the Mitchell Library and in each of the district libraries of the City, with the object of giving the public an opportunity to furnish additional names or rectify any errors that might be noticed. In this way the entries were very largely increased, but, although these have been finally brought to a total of close on 18,000, the finished Roll is by no means put forward as necessarily containing all the names entitled to a place on it. All that can be claimed is that no effort has been spared by those responsible for its compilation to make it as complete and as accurate as possible. The fact that no distinctions won by officers or men are indicated on the Roll may seem to call for a word of explanation. It early became apparent that particulars of such honours could not be fully ascertained, and, rather than take the invidious course of giving these in some case and not in others, the committee, after due consideration, decided to omit them altogether. That this was a wise decision will be conceded by those who reflect that the Roll is mainly one, not of professional warriors, but of peace-loving citizens who, called to arms by a great national peril, bore, each and all, their stern ordeal with an equal measure of courage and constancy. The Roll, which from its very nature can scarcely fail to evoke mingled feelings of pride and sorrow, constitutes a record of patriotic devotion and self-sacrifice worthy of preservation in the archives of the City for all time.
