Anne Bonney and Mary Read were pirates during the 1700s! Anne Bonney was born in County Cork, Ireland. Shortly after her birth, Anne and her parents immigrated to America. When Anne got older, she fell in love with a pirate named Captain Jack Rackham. When Anne and Jack had their first baby, Anne had to retire from piracy but when Anne was finished nursing her baby for a few weeks, she left him with some close friends in Cuba and rejoined her husband. Mary Read was born in Plymouth, England, around the same time Anne Bonny was born. A week or to after her birth, Mary s father went on a voyage and was never heard from again. When Mary turned 13 or 14, she started her life over and began to wear men s clothing. She did this because life as a man was easier than life as a woman. Soon, Mary got a job on a Dutch Merchant ship that was heading to the Caribbean Sea. Soon, after the ship set sail, it was over taken by Captain Jack Rackham s Vanity. Anne was already a part of Rackham s crew and she and Mary quickly discovered each other s dress crossings and became close friends. After being a part of the crew for awhile, the two friends were soon to be known for their violent tempers and ferocious fighting. In late October, 1720, Rackham s ship anchored of Point Negril, Jamaica. The pirates sat down to celebrate recent victories leaving Anne and Mary on guard. Right in the middle of the party, a British Navy sloop surprised them. The male pirates hid below deck leaving Anne and Mary to defend the ship. The woman yelled at the men to come on up cowards and fight like men. The women were overwhelmed by the British Navy. The entire crew was captured and taken to prison. Jack and his crew were tried and were sentenced to hang. Anne was allowed to visit his cell before his execution. She said, Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang d like a dog. Anne and Mary were tried also and found guilty. The judge asked them if they had something to say. They said, Mi lord we plead our bellies, meaning they were pregnant. Their sentence to be killed was put off until they had their children. Mary is said to have died of a fever before the birth of her child. Some say that Anne s rich father bought her release and she settled down into a quiet life. 2 PAGE 2 WEEKLY NUGGET REPORT THE BIOGRAPHY OF MR. WINSAND BY JENNA G. Stacy Winsand is a third grade teacher at Pedersen Elementary. He was born on June 20 th, 1976 in Gilmanton, WI. Mr. Winsand went to Dover Elementary when he was in 4 th grade. He had about 28 kids in his class. When it came to lunch time, Mr.Winsand was always up to taking school lunch. At recess, Mr. Winsand liked to play basketball or football with his buddies, as most boys would like to do at that age. As a child, Mr.Winsand dreamed of being an engineer when he grew up. Mr. Winsand sailed through the rest of 4 th grade and then moved on to Junior High, then High School. When he finished High School, Mr. Winsand went to college at UW-Eau Claire. Then he went to Winona State University for a Master s Degree. For his first job, Mr.Winsand went back to Gilmanton to teach 2 nd grade. MOUNT RAINER BY ALEX W. June 24, 1947 while more than twice as fast as any silver globe moving along the flying near Mount Rainier, Washington, people noticed a motion of nine silvery crescent-shaped objects flying in tight formation. Their speed was a fantastic 200 mph, known aircraft of that day. A doctor saw a huge rim of the Grand Canyon. UFO sightings piled up for months, with an impressive number of reports from airlines and military pilots. ALIENS BY: ALEX W. On October 1 st of 2002 while vacationing in the southern Chilean city of Concepcion, a group of family members found what appeared to be a small humanoid creature only 7.2 cm long. It has a really large head, two arms with long fingers, and two legs. People think that some of the structures built on earth were built by aliens. The pyramids of Egypt, Easter Island and others were difficult to build. Some people think we have been fed a bunch of baloney about the origins of all these incredible works and their builders. Some people think that the ancient buildings were where the aliens landed. They think the large stone monuments in Mexico with steps going down the sides. were for the aliens to climb down the pyramids to the ground. That is the most logical reason for their construction. And to think primitive people could build something so incredible is, well, not likely in all logic.

3 JENNA G., SYDNEY B., NATHAN K., AND ALEX PAGE 3 MRS. WALTHER BY ALEX W. Mrs. Walther is the art teacher for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders at Pedersen Elementary. She grew up in a town about the size of Altoona called Clinton WI. Her birthday is June 7. She went to college for her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens point. For her graduate degree she attended the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. Art was her favorite subject in school. Her first job was working at Pizza Hut. Her favorite sport is badminton. She wants to travel to Europe to see the castles. I think she is the best art teacher in the world because if people are having trouble she will figure out a way to help them understand. MRS. STANGEL BY SYDNEY B. Mrs. Stangel is a third grade teacher at Pedersen Elementary. Mrs. Stangel loves to teach kids and see them succeed. She has two children named Kailegh who is in eighth grade and Jevin her son who is in fourth grade. She loves to play with her kids (a lot). They do four wheeling, playing games, (like checkers) and playing ball. (soft ball, volley ball, basket ball excreta) Her favorite food is salmon from Texas Road House. She loves the color orange and thinks that snakes are quite fascinating, but she would not want to meet up with a real one. (YIKES!) She loves smiley faces. (Stickers and more.) She has a very good friend that she likes to hangout with, share things, and laugh with a lot. She likes to get e- mails but, doesn t get them very often. She also uses to keep in touch with family members and friends. AMERICAN QUARTER HORSES BY SYDNEY B. The American quarter horse is the most popular breed of horse in America. Quarter horses are best known for their good racing and running up to 55mph. They also have a muscular body and very strong hind quarters (back legs). The back legs are used for stunts and racing at ranches or national road races. The American Quarter Horse Association is the largest registry in the world and holds over four million horses registered worldwide. American quarter horses are also known for sprinting short distances. American Quarter Horses have also been exported worldwide. There are two types of American quarter horses: one is used for hunting in England and the other is the regular quarter horse in America. Quarter horses have been trained for trail riding and mounted police units.

4 EDMUND FITZGERALD - LOST FOREVER BY: NATHAN K. The Edmund Fitzgerald was a ship that sailed the Great Lakes. The Edmund Fitzgerald construction started in River Rouge, MI on June and it was launched on June Her route ran between Superior Wisconsin and Detroit, MI. She usually used the break water as the Superior entryway. Newman C Larson was the first captain until McSorley was captain when it sank in On November the bulk carrier the Edmund Fitzgerald left the city of Superior, Wisconsin from the NP railroad ore dock at 4:30 pm steaming through the break water at Conner s point in Superior. Another ship, the Arthur M Anderson left Two Harbors when the national break water service issued a gale warning. Jessie Bernie Cooper (the captain of the Anderson) said, I am right behind you to the Edmund Fitzgerald as they left Two Harbors, Minnesota. At first the national break water service issued a gale warning then it became a storm warning at 11:30 pm. The captains were not worried. At Isle Royal, MI at 1:00 AM the Anderson asked, Did your radar finder rip off?. Yes indeed., said McSorley, the captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald. He was worried they might sink. Sinking in a gale is a captain s nightmare. 45 miles from Whitefish Bay and Point MI the Anderson got hit by a hurricane strength wave at 3:30 PM November 10th. Be careful, said Jessie (the captain of the Andersen). Why? asked McSorly?. It is coming toward you, said Jessie. This is no lie, McSorly thought. He told the wheelsmen to steer the ship from the hurricane strength wave. The wheelsmen got prepared.. Then they knew heavy snow hit the ship. They also were in an ice water mansion. It was suppertime and the old cook came on deck with pizza at 7:00. Their normal suppertime is 5:00 PM. Because of the Gale they ate 2 hours late, trying get through the storm. At 7:10 PM they went down sinking sideways. Then it broke in half. The search was on as the Anderson called the US coast guard ship Sundew at 8:30 PM. For 2 days they searched. The Edmund Fitzgerald rests at the bottom of Lake Superior, 536 feet at the bottom as an underwater treasure. In 1987 the very first diver went down to the Edmund Fitzgerald for artifacts. Two things were raised. One was a wheel and another was an iron ore pellet. It sank by the US navy aircraft. Sitting 17 miles from Whitefish Bay the Edmund Fitzgerald is long gone in the great lakes. It was going to be safe in Whitefish Point. At 9:00 PM the Bea- con lighthouse lost power. The people on the Edmund Fitzgerald will be remembered and treasured along with the Fitzgerald. The Edmund Fitzgerald will never be raised. Divers will still find it today under water in Lake Superior. Another treasure is the Arthur M Anderson s captain Jessie Bernie Cooper who died on March 1, On July the ships bell was raised. It weighed more than 210 pounds. Also back in 1987 a diver raised 3 artifacts: a wheel, a lifeboat, and a life preserver. The preserver and bell are in Whitefish Bay and the lifeboat is at Valley Camp Museum ship in Sault St Marie, MI. Also, a very old iron ore pellet and propeller were raised. A church bell in Detroit chimed 29 times for each so lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald and all the ones who lost their lives that stormy night on Lake Superior. THE ARTHUR ANDERSON Today the Arthur M. Anderson still sails with a working crew of 32 people. The Anderson sails the route between Duluth, MN and the very ending tip of Lake Ontario probably St Francis, Ontario. She usually loads in Duluth every four weeks. It takes six days to sail to St Francis, two days to unload and six days to sail to Duluth Midwest Energy Recourses in Superior. The Anderson was built in 1952 in Duluth MN and Jesse Bernie Cooper was asked to be captain at the age of 52. Before captain on the Anderson, Captain Cooper sailed on the sea and took wheat and grain to Europe and Africa. He sailed until 1993 when he died during lay-up. The Anderson started life as a limestone carrier until 1971 and started carrying iron ore pellets until Captain Cooper died in Since then she has carried coal and still does. She has a long future ahead of her and will continue to sail into that future ahead of time of the Andersons life and thank Jessie Cooper for being the best captain on the great lakes. Cooper had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. All 3 brothers were captains. Jessie was captain of the Anderson. His brother Nick was Captain of the Courtney Burton and his brother Dan was the wheelsmen of the Anderson. After captains Jessie and Nick Cooper died a church bell in Detroit chimed 29 times for each so lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald and including a 30th chime for everyone so lost on the Fitzgerald.
