Notice the referee has a red wristband and a green wristband. Also notice that each wrestler has a red or green ankle-strap. he referee will raise his red hand or his green hand during the match to tell the Scoring able which wrestler has scored and which has been penalized. (See the Official Wrestling Signals guide on the next page.) ake a look at the wrestling mat. he wrestlers must stay inside the ringed wrestling area. If both wrestlers move outside the ring, the referee will call out-of-bounds and the wrestlers will return to the center of the ring to begin again. WHA HAPPENS FIRS? Both wrestlers meet at the Scoring able to check-in. hey then move to the center of the mat, put on a Red or Green ankle-strap, take their appropriate positions, and shake hands. he referee blows the whistle and signals "Wrestle." Each wrestler tries to take control by taking his opponent to the mat and getting behind or on top of him. his is called a AKEDOWN and is worth 2 individual points, HOW ABOU POINS? he offensive wrestler (usually on top) is trying to stay on top and get a hold which will enable him to keep his opponent's shoulders on the mat for two seconds. his is called a FALL, a P1NFALL, or simply "PINNING" your opponent. No individual points are awarded for a pin a P1NFALL ends the match, and the pinner is the winner! he first points in a match are likely to be given for a AKEDOWN (2 points). he defensive wrestler (usually in the "bottom" or "down" position) is trying to ESCAPE (1 point) or REVERSE (2 points) his opponent by getting on top or behind. he offensive wrestler can also earn NEAR FALL points, awarded by holding his opponent's shoulders in jeopardy (less than a 45 degree angle) near the mat for two to four seconds (2 points) or five or more seconds (3 points) without being able to pin his opponent. PERIODS AND SAR POSIIONS: Every match has HREE periods. Each period lasts WO minutes, he FIRS period starts from the SANDING or NEURAL position. For the SECOND period, the referee flips a red/ green "coin" to determine which wrestler chooses his starting position. he coin-toss winner may choose the OP position, the BOOM position, the NEURAL position, or he can DEFER the decision to the next period, meaning the other wrestler chooses the position for this round. his may be to the toss-winner's advantage because he then gets to choose position for the third period, which is considered a more critical time in the match. In the HIRD period, unless there has been a previous DEFERment, the wrestler who lost the coin-toss in the previous period gets to choose his position for this round. In the event of a PINFALL or ECHNICAL FALL (15 point advantage), the match ends during any period. Otherwise, the match ends at the end of the third period, with the wrestler having scored the most points declared the winner. EAM POINS: For a PINFALL, a wrestler scores 6 points for his team. A win by FORFEI is also worth 6 points. A ECHNICAL FALL (15 point advantage) scores 5 team points. A MAJOR DECISION (8 point advantage) scores 4 team points. A DECISION (1-7 point advantage) scores 3 team points. When all matches have been wrestled, the scores are tallied and the team with the highest score wins the tournament! JO

Penalty - 1 or 2 points to the other wrestler: For illegal holds, infractions, technical violations, and unsportsmanlike conduct. Stalling - 1 point to the other wrestler: For having a position of advantage but failing to make an honest attempt to secure the fall.
