1 The InterKnot Newsletter of the International Guild of Knot Tyers North American Branch June 2010 Up-rigging the Santa Maria Mains l - continued The Santa Maria is located in Columbus, Ohio and is permanently docked on the Scioto River in downtown Columbus. It commemorates the first European voyage to America by Christopher Columbus and the sailing and operation of the traditional squarerigged vessels which made the voyage. The Santa Maria is an educational museum used to teach the importance and impact of the first voyage as well as the technology of the square-rigged ship. This article is continued from April 2010 issue of the InterKnot. Raising the Main Yardarm The Santa Maria in summer It takes six people to raise the main yardarm. Four people are on the block and tackle at the knight's head. Two others (not shown) are on the main deck at the lift lines for the main yardarm. No motors or hydraulics here! It s all muscle power! 2 Finally the main yardarm is being hoisted into position for the summer tourist season. It s about three-quarters of the way up to the setting for the summer. You can see we have the mains l reefed and marled. The two blocks are the lift lines for the main yardarm. 3 IGKT-NAB attends 2010 Ohio Scouting Camporall The IGKT-NAB had a booth at the 2010 Simon Kenton Council Camporall on the Ross County Fairgrounds near Chillicothe, Ohio. It was held April 30 - May 1. Over 7000 scouts were in attendance. Activities for the scouts were too numerous to mention. The IGKT was given a very large booth area for the display. A fast moving storm front forced scouts indoors and the IGKT booth had over 1000 visitors! IGKT members were able to talk with about 400 people. It was a very successful Camporall! 4 IGKT-NAB Knot Training displayed at Scouting Camporall Rob Cramer, Scout leader, Troop 64, Simon Kenton Council, Ohio attended a walking staff decoration training session sponsored by the IGKT-NAB in January He learned how to tie Ring Bolt Hitching, St. Mary s Hitching, and the 3L4B Turk s head. (The Boy Scout Woggle.) Shown at the left are some of the walking staffs Rob has worked on since January. The middle staff has St. Mary s hitching on the bottom half. The top hitching on all staffs is Ring Bolt Hitching with the ends covered with the Boy Scout Woggle. His staffs were used by several members of the Camporall staff. Good work Rob! Making a temporary display board Quite often I m asked to teach knotting at various functions. When teaching knotting to students, it is nice to have some sort of visual reference. Since I may never do the same training again, it would be expensive to go to the trouble of making a permanent knot board. Instead, I make a temporary knot board. Items needed: A large cardboard box, a rule, punch, marking pens, masking tape, light wire, white glue, and cordage. For cordage, I sometimes use clothes InterKnot June 2010 Pg 4

5 line cord. It s readily available, inexpensive, works well, is large enough to be seen, and most importantly can be preserved for display purposes. Preserving: I ve tied knots and pinned them to boards, only to have a child walk up and rip the knot off the display board thus destroying both the knot and the display board. Early on, I started preserving knots so even if they were ripped off the board, they wouldn t come untied and could be re-mounted. To preserve the knot, I make a mixture of 1 part white glue and 10 parts water. After tying the knot, I soak it in the water/glue mixture. After the cordage is thoroughly soaked, I pin the knot to a piece of cardboard covered with wax paper. Pinning the knot to the board prevents the cordage from twisting as it dries. It allows me to arrange the knot for the best display. The wax paper prevents the cordage from sticking to the drying board. After the knots are completely dried, they are moved to the temporary display board. Next, the knot is laid out for the best display. A punch is used to make holes for the mounting wires. Mounting wires are attached and twisted tight. Then masking tape is applied to the back of the board so the wires don t catch on anything while moving or displaying the board. 6 Finally, labels are made using the word processor on the computer and printed out on the printer. The labels are cut to size, laid out on the display board, then glued to the board using the white glue. Once everything dries, you have a nice, temporary display board that can be used over and over. Since the display can be made so quickly, you can easily add notes to explain your knotting, or arrange the display for a better view. Some of my temporary display boards have lasted for years. Please remember this is your newsletter and articles will keep other members informed of your activities. While you may not feel what you are doing is noteworthy or important, others may not feel the same way. Something that seems simple to one person can be a major problem for another and an article with how to instructions can open up a new area for knotting. I put one Turk s Head knot on a walking staff to remind me and others that it took two years to learn how to tie it. My time could have been shortened considerably if I could have had another member with whom to correspond or who had shown how to correctly tie the knot. If you aren t a writer, that isn t a problem. 7 work on a project gives everyone a new insight. We have members from Maine to Hawaii, from Michigan to Florida and while Ohio is sometimes called the crossroads of America, I know it isn t the only area that has knotting activities. Are you working with social groups? We ve written about 4-H and Scouting are you working with any other groups? Are you teaching a class at a local school or church group? If so, send me some pictures. The corresponding article may give another member assistance in working with a local group. You ve tied the 300th key fob and tied the 500th dragonfly and are looking for a new project. What are you doing for those little projects that keep the hand muscles trained in knotting? Members want to know. It may seem trivial to you, but it may be an exciting new area of knotting for someone else. Let me know! You may submit written articles in MS Word Document or convertible document. But I can accept other types of documents. So don t let that be a stumbling block for sending instructions. If you don t feel you re a good writer, send me your notes and I ll write the article for you. Don t have black & white sketches with motion arrows? Just send pictures. I can work around them. With the wonders of modern desktop publishing, I don t even need high-contrast black & white photos. However, jpeg format is a help. So let s expand the content of our newsletter.
