3 FROM THE DESK OF THE MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CEO Dear Allahabadians, I am extremely happy to present the Mar 18 edition of the Bank s in-house magazine Triveni Dhara. I would like to compliment the editorial team of the house magazine for taking pain and efforts to bring this magazine back to life in the last quarter. The previous edition of Triveni Dhara received a very warm and encouraging response from all the quarters. I am delighted to see that the contribution made by each one of you helped the drive in bringing out the next issue. I am positive that this issue will be welcomed with equal enthusiasm as the previous one. It should be the endeavor of all of us to ensure that this magazine is a regular feature. Triveni Dhara serves as a platform to express our creativity, our interests in various forms and I am sure that you will continue to write on diverse topics. You may get the contributions from your family members in the form of articles, stories, poems, travelogues, etc. We come to know about the creative pursuits of people around us through such attempts. But for holidays and weekends on day to day basis our schedule is almost fixed as a major chunk of time is spent in commuting and taking care of official duties. In order to break this monotony, we can take out time for ourselves i.e. Me time. This may be utilized for any of the activities that provide relaxation to the mind. Such activities help in rejuvenating ourselves. It may involve creative pursuits like drawing, painting, singing or simply taking a stroll, watching TV or having a dialogue with the family. These activities provide positive energy apart from giving us relaxation and personal growth. We may therefore, within our dayto-day schedule, engage in our hobbies or creative pursuits so that we feel reenergized to take on the tasks for the next day. It is a matter of great pride for all of us that Allahabad Bank has been recently adjudged as the winner in the category of Best Payment Initiative amongst medium banks by the Indian Banks Association for Kolkata, 19th March 2018 FY17. The Bank has also been awarded Financial Inclusion Platinum Award for its performance under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Furthermore, three FGMs viz., Kolkata, Bhopal and Allahabad were the winning APY service providers for the We for Victory campaign organized by Pension Fund and Regulatory Development Authority (PFRDA). Here, I would like to acknowledge the contribution of each one of you who are directly or indirectly connected with this achievement. A big congratulation to each one of you! Further, I am very happy to share with all of you that the Bank s Employee Share Purchase Scheme (ESPS) received an overwhelming response which truly reflects the confidence employees have in their beloved organization. I thank you all once again for your spontaneous support. The Bank reported losses of Rs crores during the Dec 17 quarter owing to higher provisioning. Therefore, in order to nudge the Bank towards profitability, the need of the hour is to put in our efforts towards increasing business levels on both assets as well as liabilities side. Achieving our desired goal would be the combined efforts of each of us. Therefore, it is imperative that we support the growth of this great institution. We are in the last quarter of the present fiscal. The need of the hour is re-dedicating ourselves to ensure growth of the organization. Our focus will be mainly on earning interest, conserving capital and making profits by aiming at higher low cost deposits, recovery of overdues, increasing SMARt loans off-take and NFNI income. Another important area that we need to focus is recovery in written-off accounts as this straightaway goes to improve the Bank s profit. It is the time to put in our best foot forward and work together towards transformation of this organization which will collectively help to turn around the Bank. I would like to end my message by quoting, There is no substitute for hardwork. Yours sincerely, (Usha Ananthasubramanian) 1

4 From the Desk of the Executive Director Dear Allahabadians, We, being a Public Sector Bank, have been contributing towards nation building since nationalization. Brand PSB in general and Allahabad Bank in particular, has always dedicated its services for the development of the nation. However, in recent times some unfortunate events have hit the banking industry due to which system and procedures of PSBs are under scanner. This has led to some negative sentiments about the Banking industry. Our Bank has a glorious past of 153 years and during these years the Bank has passed through many challenges and has always emerged stronger. Just a little more effort is needed from all of us to overcome these challenges and transform the present negativity into positive sentiments. This can easily be achieved by treating all our customers with utmost courtesy and understanding, as banking is a customer-centric business. Their queries and misgivings should be carefully attended by us, only then we shall remain true to our tagline A Tradition of Trust. It is now time to move forward and garner quality business. I am sure that plenty of such business is readily available in the market, we only have to set our sights on such business and bring it to our fold. Needless to mention that all systems and procedures of the Bank should be adhered to, at all times. NPA recovery and slippage control should continue to be our prime focus areas, besides mobilizing low cost deposits (CASA) and lending under SMARt loans. In this pursuit, we all have to rededicate and redouble our efforts to overcome the challenges that our bank is facing. I solicit whole-hearted cooperation from each one of you to rise to the occasion and take our bank to greater heights in the coming days. Wishing you good luck for the new Financial Year. With best regards. (N.K.Sahoo) 2

5 Greetings from the Chief Editor Dear Allahabadians, At the outset, I express my sincere gratitude for an overwhelming response to Bank s first in-house e-magazine, Triveni Dhara from all corners of the country. Triveni Dhara was re-launched in January 2018 as an e-magazine, showcasing articles also in regional languages for the first time. Needless to mention that this multilingual magazine, available in digital format on intranet as well as on Bank s website has received widespread acceptance and appreciation. I am grateful to all contributors for their valuable submissions and most importantly, for their spontaneous participation. We have now created a dedicated -id i.e. trivenidhara@allahabadbank.in to facilitate collection of contributions and innovative suggestions at one place. However, to make our magazine more enriching and vibrant, it is desired that all of us, specially the younger generation should come forward and contribute wholeheartedly. It would not be out of context to mention here that Bank has recently marked its presence on Social Media platform through its Official Facebook page and Twitter handle. Active and positive use of these platforms by all staff members can further enhance the Bank s Brand image. You may follow Bank s Official Facebook page at and Twitter handle at Allbank@1865. 9 Indelible Moments International Women s Day is celebrated all over the world on 8th March. It is celebrated to make the women realize their real worth and also boost to fully exploit their hidden potential. Women s courage to cross all the hurdles and bring about a sea change in all the spheres of life is especially appreciated on this very day. As Hillary Clinton said, Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world. Likewise, this year, we at Allahabad Bank also celebrated International Women s Day. At the helm of affairs, we have Smt. Usha Ananthasubramanian as the Managing Director & CEO, who graced the occasion by addressing the women employees of the Bank at Head Office. The excerpts from her address are being shared here for the benefit of the staff especially the women. The MD & CEO enumerated the multiple roles that women play in their everyday life. Women have also gained financial independence, which has given them confidence to lead their own lives and build their identity. They are successfully taking up diverse professions, thus proving that they are second to none in any respect. While doing so, women also strike a balance between their commitment to their home and family as well as the profession. She also emphasized on the importance of women empowerment at workplace and to the society at large. In the present scenario, empowerment of women is very necessary to bring gender equality. Today s women realize their strengths and abilities. They are aware that they can contribute to the society, their community and the world. Women are no longer willing to play a second fiddle to their male counterparts. By breaking the glass ceilings, they have proved that they are unstoppable when determined. However, the MD & CEO was of the view that women often sacrifice too much and time and again settle for less in their professional lives. By not moving ahead in Dipti Shrivastava DGM, P&D Dept. HO the career path, one eventually stops learning due to the comfort that the old position provides. In turn, since there is no self-development, there is no contribution to the development of the organization. She therefore, strongly advocated that women should come forward to grab and not to forego their career opportunities and continue to take promotions, keep learning and strive to rise higher in their respective organizations. Referring to a third dimension, she mentioned that amidst all the multiple roles that women play, they tend to forget to care for themselves. They need to keep in mind that carving out time for self is vital for keeping themselves healthy and happy. She opined that a woman must take good care of herself as by doing so, it puts her in a better position to help and take care of others. From the daily grind she is into, a woman must take out time to pursue her interests as it will bring contentment and positivity in her. Overall, we women must continue to inspire, encourage and uplift each other. There is an invisible expectation from all the quarters that we carry out our duties in whichever roles we play. But in the entire process, our own expectations should not take a backseat. We have witnessed significant changes and attitudinal shift in both women s and society s thoughts about our equality. There are now more women in the boardrooms, greater equality in legislative rights and an increased visibility of women as impressive role models in all walks of life. We may say that the scenario has changed for the better. Therefore, every year, just to remind us of our capabilities and give inspiration to progress, the world celebrates Women s Day. The ambiance was so soft, one could almost hear them talking The first candle said: I am Peacel The world is full of anger and fighting. Nobody can keep me lit. Then the flame of Peace went out completely. The second candle said: I am faith! I am no longer indispensable. It doesn t make sense that I stay lit another moment. Just then a breeze softly blew Faith s flame. Sadly the third candle began to speak: I am Love! People don t understand my importance so they simply put me aside. They even forget to love those who are nearest to them. And waiting no longer Love s flame went out. Suddenly A child entered the room and saw the three unit candles Why aren t you burning? You re supposed to stay lit till the end. Saying this, the child began to cry. Then the fourth candle answered: Don t be afraid, I am Hope! While I am still burning we can relight the other candles. With shining eyes the child took the candle of hope and lit the other candles. The Greatest of These Is Love but the flame of Hope should never go out of your life! With hope each of us can live with Peace, Faith and Love. ( Collected ) Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world - Nelson Mandela 9

13 An analysis of Modern Society at Cultural and Professional Front Pankaj Tripathi Astt. General Manager Head Office It takes a while for anyone of us to actually realise that we have reached twenty eighteen. Yes my dear colleagues, we are almost two decades down in the new millennium and it s not just time, but technology, culture, work place scenario and ethics, both individual and of a society which have galloped ahead in leaps and bounds. Briefly touching on the four aspects enumerated above, technology has taken a mammoth leap as our society has transited from landline connections to smart phones, from communication once a day to once every hour, from options between an Ambassador and a Fiat to Audis, BMWs and Land Rovers available at our doorstep, from travelling to Singapore to buy a handicam to buying it online, it s all at the click of a finger and our society has definitely progressed. Culturally too, we have travelled from a primarily conservative and religious society to a modern, globally connected society where there is much more freedom of expression, education and western influence affecting us both positively and negatively. At work place, the rigid hierarchy adhered to fifty years back is much more liberal, welcoming initiatives from young talent and greater significance for workplace ethics and work life balance. With the growth of private sector, more and more opportunities have mushroomed for the youth to grow and keep pace with the world and also giving a tough competition to government sector. Participation of women professionally has taken a big leap which empowers both the economics of the country and cultural matrix of the Society. However, with the growth in technology, information and awareness, corporate ethics have declined in several instances which result in scams and frauds, causing depletion of public trust in organisations. The need of the hour is to install more ethical corporate practices and better corporate vigilance for prevention of any unpleasant and notorious activities in the work front. So, the crucial question is... What is the need of the hour? The need of the hour is to evolve and adopt a culture where the potential and opportunities for progress and growth are ample and deserving talent from all walks of life is assigned the job of meeting the targets. Opportunities and work culture be such that it imbibes the best of both the worlds in terms of work practices, work-life balance and equality for women while reengineering the same for the matrix of our country. India, being a growing superpower, is in a commanding position today at the global platform, as the Government thrusts manufacturing and makes FDI and FII more conducive for foreign investors. IT sector is already the sunshine industry of the country which has opened wide arena for the Indian talent. Our society is bestowed with rich and diverse cultural heritage as it is, thus adapting to the western culture judiciously to some degree will only make it richer. However, the catch is in not losing our own rich heritage in the process. Hence, we may modify it to suit the present world scenario, but not lose it in the process of keeping pace with the speed of growth. It is wise to remember, that many International legends including Steve Jobs, Founder of the tech giant Apple, the renowned TV host and anchor Oprah Winfrey, the legendary Hollywood actor Richard Gere and many When everything seems to be going against you, remember the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it Henry Ford 11

14 others have found refuge in the simplicity and purity of the Indian Soil at different points of life and have visited India to find meaning, when they lost it everywhere else. Thus, it is a humble reminder to modern day youth to stay connected to the soil while soaring high in the sky. We need to preserve our family values, love and respect for the elderly and loving and supportive societal structure while moving ahead. In this modern scenario, the question arises that what is the place for ethics such as hard work, integrity, honesty or sincerity? For this, I believe, these virtues are the foundation stone of a society, a home and an organisation. They are the brick and mortar of a tall building. And for a building to be strong and concrete, the foundation and cement need to be in place. Therefore, the age old virtues still need to be weaved into our work, play and families for a stable base and strong foundation. Thus, modern society needs to take careful steps in this path of progress, such that sustainable development may be achieved and the society may progress while keeping any negative influences at bay. The task may be Herculean but it happens to be the only way for sustainable development. Deep Sarkar Probationary Officer Karimpur Branch A journey had thus begun, Z.O. Berhampore The first sight out of mother s womb. Unaware of the path we would walk. Yet another new journey that awaits. A journey through unknown lands. Along the path, There had been times that we cherish, And times we failed, There also had been times that we remember not much. We, like toys made from clay, And shaped by uncountable moments and experiences. Many a time, we had and would become weak, With all our hopes be lost, But to believe in ourselves Would be all we need. And we shall see our future, Shaping itself from our belief. That, we shall grow stronger, That even if we can t walk, we shall crawl But not stop till we reach the place we have believed. That, we shall be greater than our fears, That a place exists beyond the mighty oceans, Beyond the highest mountains, And with our belief like the silver lining amongst the dark clouds, Someday, we shall definitely reach, One day, we will definitely reach. 12 Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value Albert Einstein

24 Know Our Customer Sanjeev Sharma Chief Manager, Anandlok Branch New Delhi Whenever we talk about our customers and their affiliation with our Bank, the first image to flash before my eyes is that of the highly respected Septuagenarian customer of Anandlok Branch, New Delhi-Shri Mahanand Sharma, popularly known as Jijaji by the entire branch. Mr. Sharma had a technical background as he had completed his diploma from ITI in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration. Soon after, in the early seventies he started his career as a mechanic with M/s A.C. Corporation, Delhi. Later he was promoted as Foreman and worked on this post till In pursuit of career opportunities he migrated to Jeddah in But service could not quench his thirst for innovation and after a short stint of serving in the Gulf for 2 years, he returned back to the country in He then ventured into the business of maintenance of AC plants on a very small scale. His first client was Devika Towers at Nehru Place, New Delhi, of whom he talks fondly even till date. It was during this period that Sharma ji s relationship with our Bank started. His brotherin-law, who was a staff member in Anandlok branch, was pivotal in introducing him to the Bank. A current account for his business, in the name of M/s Clymate Control was opened with Anandlok Branch in which regular transactions started taking place. However, even after the transfer of his brother-in-law from this Branch, Mr. Sharma continued his patronage towards the branch. Till 1987, his company was engaged in very small tenders in and around Delhi that could barely meet the business expenses and salaries of employees. But he never gave up and kept striving to get business of bigger corporates and government departments. During those struggling years of his business, he fondly recollects Bank s support at every step. The branch extended its services in every possible manner, which included exchange of small denomination cash, accepting some of the mutilated notes which he might have collected while receiving payments from his clients. As he frequently participated in tenders, he was never kept waiting for the required Pay orders (DD/BC), which helped him submit all bids within time. This not only earned his admiration for the Bank but also indebted him towards our organization. Slowly, Mr. Sharma kept getting continuous small tenders and finally luck favoured him, when he managed to bag a contract of ONGC, one of the most renowned Navaratna companies of the country. The contract involved maintenance of Centrifugal plant in the office of ONGC. He ensured giving benchmark level quality service to his clients irrespective of the very thin margins initially, as he never compromised with the quality of service. It was during these times when he was proving his worth to the corporates while the Bank was working besides him, quietly yet diligently. His banking requirements were increasing with each passing day. On many occasions he would approach the branch for cash when business hours were about to get over. However, he was always accommodated by the Bank. Slowly but surely, work started pouring in from all quarters and from then onwards, there was no looking back for Mr. Sharma. With increasing business, the need for additional banking facilities viz. Bank Guarantees also kept growing. Bank ensured to offer the requisite facilities timely which acted as a catalyst in the growth of his company. Over the years the Bank became a partner in the growth story of Jijaji. Subsequently, OD facility against deposit was also given to the Company to tide over unforeseeable business requirements. Thereafter the company kept growing, achieving one milestone 22 I believe every human has a finite number of heartbeats. I don t intend to waste any of mine -Neil Armstrong

25 after the other and spreading its wings pan India. It now has over 400 employees working under his guidance. The association, which had begun with a small current account, by now has grown manifold, with Bank business to the tune of more than Cores. All through these years Jijaji has been a committed and loyal customer of the branch reciprocating the timely support that the Bank extended to his business. This bond grew so strong over the years that each time he recalls the old days and old staff members, he becomes emotional for our Bank, just as he is sentimental about his old Bajaj Chetak scooter, his dear companion, since 1986, which had seen tough times with him. It now occupies an eminent place in his house, though not used, but still coveted like a prized possession. Jijaji has now gradually made inroads in the government sector also, particularly DRDO, and is classified as a reputed A-class contractor. His company had finally become a name to reckon with in the business of refrigeration and air-conditioning. Although Mr. Sharma still makes monthly visits to the branch, the purpose of his visits is limited to cash withdrawals and deposits, as his staff takes care of other banking transactions. However, on such visits he makes it a point to ask about the wellbeing of each and every staff member. Any new staff member is greeted by him in a manner by which he would greet his own family member. All through these years, many private Banks have approached him to shift his accounts, but none could break his bond with Allahabad Bank. Because, he genuinely believes that it was our Bank, whose association and support has put him on the path of undisputed success. We all address him Jijaji without knowing its genesis. 26 SHOOTING - STRAIGHT FROM MY HEART But I was not one to give up so easily. The teacher in me, gradually, motivated me to move forward in life. I still had a ray of hope with my intact right hand, meaning thereby that everything now onwards would only be right. I, Pooja Agarwal, was born in a middle class family. Since beginning, I was energetic and active. I graduated in Information Technology, and after completing my masters, worked as a Lecturer in a reputed college in Meerut. Life was smooth sailing till December However, at the young age of 27, I met with an unfortunate train accident. I lost both my legs and left arm in this incident and overnight into a trilateral amputated handicapped person. After the accident I was brought to the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (I.S.I.C.) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. The treatment continued for one and half months. It was a huge physical loss to me and the thought I would have to survive only on one limb was draining me emotionally. Life turned upside down and I battled with endless depression. Depression, not only due to being incapacitated but also due to demise of my father and annulment of marriage. I resumed my studies while still in Hospital, with the intention to get a desk job. Simultaneously, my struggle began to fit into my prosthetic limbs. Both my efforts paid off as I finally managed to walk on artificial limbs and also got the opportunity to serve in Allahabad bank as Probationary Officer in June I got into active service but my father s teaching always prompted me to do something more. He had always taught me to be a student throughout life and this was my Mantra in life s journey. My pursuit to do something more moved me towards sporting activities as I reaslised that Sports is an integral part of rehabilitation for a person with physical disability. Soon I got to know that I can play para /wheelchair sports and I decided to move on in life. Choosing the right sport was a tough task for me as I had limitation in both legs and in one arm. Finally I chose Shooting as a para sport and started practising from Feb 2016 under the guidance of Mr Sabir Khan, Mr Zakir Khan (International Gold Medalist) and Mr Jahid Ali. I started this journey without my own Pistol and specific wheelchair. I had to borrow all the items for my shooting practice. In this new journey of life, I received utmost support from my Bank. In a short span, I started winning medals in National and International level shooting championships in Paralympic category. I am enlisting some of my achievements as below, which has given my life a meaningful direction. I have a disciplined lifestyle. My day starts at six in the morning with yoga and exercise. Thereafter I perform the duties required as an officer of the Bank followed by my daily training in the evening and finally coming back home by 9.00 pm. I have to strike the right chord between my banking job and shooting practice. Since 2012 life for me has been like the changing seasons of the year from spring to harsh summers to autumn and chilly winters, I have seen it all. But in this journey, my self-ignited will power and the echoes 24 Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago - Warren Buffett

30 Life - A Phantasmagoria of Consciousness! The adventure and beauty of life is in it s uncertainty, we never know what to expect the very next moment and it is probably this that keeps us going. If I rewind a year back, life was pretty different from what it is now - I did not have a job, things were very uncertain as to what comes next, and nothing was going right. But come late 2016 and with perseverance and hard work, the turn-around began. I hit a purple patch, one that I will remember all my life - it was a phase that saw me crack every examination I appeared for, and the end result was in May 2017 when I had a problem of plenty, with 7 jobs to choose from. But I had always given priority to job satisfaction and liking, something that I will be happy doing for the next 35 years of my life. And to decide upon such a long duration was by no means a decision that could be taken in haste, and having made up my mind, there I was - Probationary Officer, at Allahabad Bank, a journey that began on July 24, 2017 at Staff College Kolkata. 24th July is special, a day to be remembered for a lifetime and I have vivid memories of the day. It was raining cats and dogs since morning and I had put up at a hotel quite far from Alipore. But come what may, despite all the rain and waterlogged streets, I had reached STC on time. I was a newbie and had butterflies in my stomach, there were 32 others along with me, and little did we know that two months later, all these formal hellos would give way to a bond so strong that was beyond imagination on day one. The first impression of STC for me was decent; things were neat and clean, the ambience was friendly and there was an air of calm discipline all around. Such was the warmth and affection we received in the coming days that what started off as STC transformed from C to H, from college to home! In the next 8 weeks, this place gave me a lot. I learnt not only about basic banking, but also about different facets of life, that shall stand me in good stead in the difficult times I encounter in life. We were truly blessed to have gained from the experience of such loving and caring faculties, who treated us like their own children and while pardoning every little mistake of ours, never did they forget to correct us and lead us in the right direction! STC days, were truly golden, one that we can never forget and will certainly be one of the best phases of our careers. Shameek Mondal Probationary Officer Banjetia Branch, Z. O. Berhampore But all good things in life come to an end, and we were no exception. September 22, saw the end of this beautiful phase and the beginning of a new phase in our journey as Allahabadians. Along with 9 other colleagues of mine, we were instructed to report at ZO Berhampore on September 25. This group of 9 again split into 9 different branches and I was posted at Banjetia Branch at a little distance from Berhampore town. With gingerly steps I reported to the branch on September 26, and here I must admit, that I have been lucky enough to have got good guidance at the branch, in the form of my senior officer, my branch head as well as our very senior head cashier. Had they not eased me into things slowly but steadily, I wonder how comfortable I would have been in such a short period of time. Life at the branch has been interesting, if not amusing. The variety of customers, leading to umpteen new experiences, mostly good, and a few not so good ones, the unending list of requests for various services and the queue in front of my desk, and the thanks, you receive when you satisfy their needs or demands, is probably what a banker ever aspires for. Yes, often the odd customer does reach out with a not-so-pleasant behavior or request, but then the customer is always right - and that we are here to serve them and we are here because of them. The very lines of Gandhi Ji, right at the entrance of Staff College Kolkata, is something not to be forgotten. Customers apart, this has been an incredible learning curve for me, armed with the basics of training from STC, life was not entirely like a fish out of water, there was at least some familiarity. I have also been lucky to get some really 28 Many of life s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up -- Thomas A. Edison

31 helpful colleagues who go all out to help me learn, with the assurance that it is okay to make a mistake, just go ahead carefully and learn - even if you make a mistake, we are here to correct you and you can only learn from your mistakes. Luckier I am, when it comes to my branch head - an ever energetic and inspiring person, who will always back you no matter what, providing the utmost level of co-operation in all matters, while also lending a personal touch in the interactions, that only encourages you to do that extra bit for the organization - and even though I won t rate Sir as a 9/9 manager, yet he is astonishingly close to it. I see this as a very early opportunity to learn the nitty gritty as much as I can from him, and trust me, there is a lot to learn, for our journey has only begun and there are miles to go! Well, they say that you only become what you think you will - so keeping the aim and morale high, with the heart in the right place and looking forward to working with dedication and honesty. As I end, I remember the lines, God gives us opportunities and challenges, what we do with them, defines who we are. This is an opportunity for us to etch our names in the books of the organization in the times to come, for employees may change over period of time, but the organization remains, and nothing is a greater gift than the moment, if your name is remembered with a smile, even when you are gone! When was it last that you let your heart decide? Let go of everything else, and come with me on this dreamy magical ride. Why do you resist? What is it that you fear? You just have to shed the pretence and come with me my dear. I ll take you to a world which you never knew was there, So take my hand and walk with me, we ll walk to that somewhere. Away from the fake reality, to a place that s real and true, Away from the sane insanity, to where you ll just be you. You can sing and dance in the starry spotlight, or you can just walk along in the silver moonlight. You can be a little bird and sing your heart s song, You can soar against the wind, or maybe just fly along. You can sit under a shady tree or you can chase a butterfly, You can drench and dance in the pouring rain, or just watch the rain and cry. You can lay on your back on the soft green grass and fill yourself with its sweet scent, till you don t unlock your own latched up self, how will you ever know of this untold merriment? You can be who you want to be without being asked to, Oh dear, believe me, you ll love to be just you! 33 Cash Economy to a less Cash Economy On 8 th November 2016, the government demonetized currency notes of denominations: Rs. 500 and Rs Together, currency notes of these denomination, accounted for more than 85%of the total value of bank notes in circulation. Demonetization caused a cash crunch and pushed the economy towards electronic payment and transfers. Though, the main pitch of demonetization was towards curbing financing of terrorism, eliminating black money and controlling counterfeiting of currency notes, a major shift towards a cashless economy was imperative. Although, the narrative of demonetization has changed, the government was sowing the seeds of a cashless economy. First, in 2014, the government launched PMJDY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana). In February, 2016 GOI approved the guidelines for promoting payments through cards and digital means. A cashless economy runs on credit or debit cards, electronic fund transfer, or online payments instead of cash. In a cashless economy, all the transactions are made via electronic modes like debit or credit cards, mobile wallet linked to one s bank account. The idea of a cashless economy is actually a revolution from the fiat money to digital money, adopted with an aim to curb the flow of black money and corruption by increasing transparency and accountability for the flow of cash. Thus, the pivotal propose of going cashless is to reduce black money and corruption. Cashless society offers many advantages to the government and the public at large, which may be enumerated as under: Convenient mode of payment and settlement. Online payment is relatively risk free with proper cyber security. Printing of new currency notes and replacement of soiled and mutilated currency notes involves huge cost. This cost can be reduced, if the economy moves towards a cashless one. Cashless economy will help in curtailing many anti- social and illegal activities like-drug trafficking, financing of terrorism and money laundering. Facilitates easy monitoring and transparency. Thus, tax evasion will be difficult. Soon after Demonetization, government took variety Amar Kumar Das Probationary Officer Jawaharnagar Branch Z.O. Guwahati of steps to motivate and encourage people with wide publicity of various digital modes: Lucky Grahak Yojana for customers, which is a reward program for transacting online. Lucky Grahak Vyapar Scheme for merchants for promoting digital transaction. Vittiya Saksharta Abhiyan to encourage people to adapt to a digital economy and cashless modes of transaction. Introduction of BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money). The Sweden Experience Sweden is one of the top five cashless economies in the world. In 2015, the share of cash in circulation in the economy as a percentage to the gross domestic product (GDP) of India was 12.3% compared to 1.7% in Sweden. Further, in 2016, more than 68% of the transactions in India were settled in cash, whereas, it is only 2% in case of Sweden. Challenges Ahead Demonetisation has encouraged the entire economy to use less cash, but has left various challenges for the people and also for the government. There is a unanimous agreement on the need to go digital. But, can this be achieved without proper infrastructure? In rural areas, ATM penetration is very limited. E-wallet and mobile payment system require a smart phone and an internet connection. But, less than a quarter of population owns a smart phone, a fast and reliable one is expensive and difficult to find. Additionally, cyber security remains a key concern. How can one be sure that swiping a card at small shops and vendor kiosks is risk free and confidential? In October 2016, more than 30 lakh debit cards were feared to have been exposed and customers were asked to change their Continuous effort not strength or intelligence is the key to unlocking our potential -Winston Churchill 31

34 PIN. Starting from educating people in rural areas, improving the infrastructure and logistics, a sound & robust cyber security system is pivotal for going digital. Conclusion Achieving a 100% cashless society will be a distant dream, still one can always start from a less cash society and then move towards mostly cashless. The move towards mostly cashless society is extremely incremental. Though, cash will be part of transaction especially in remote and rural areas, but even those transactions can be automated. Digitising financial transaction can prove to be an effective means of curbing the large parallel economy in India. It would make book keeping easier and increase the tax base, and substantially reduce the need to carry physical cash and the risk of physical theft. Fake currency and their use will fade away, and money laundering will go down. While going digital, facilitates the tracing and tracking of financial transactions, it will also need robust IT infrastructure, which India still lacks at large. However, move towards less cash economy depends on how effectively we deal with issues like cyber security, online frauds, financial inclusion, and awareness campaigns with proper redressal system. Story of Wilma Rudolph Wilma Rudolph was a sickly child who had to wear a brace on her left leg but went on to become three gold medals in track & field events in a single Olympics by overcoming her disabilities. She was born prematurely on June 23, 1940 in St. Bethlehem, Tennessee, as 20th of 22 children of her father. Stricken with double pneumonia, scarlet fever and polio as a child, she had problems with her left leg and had to wear a brace. The doctors told her mother that the child would never walk again. Her mother told her that she would and she believed her mother. It was with great determination and the help of physical therapy that she was able to overcome her disabilities. Growing up she played in the Basketball team in her school days. But as a naturally gifted runner she was soon recruited to train with University track coach Ed Temple. Nicknamed Skeeter for her famous speed, Wilma Rudolph qualified for 1956 Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia. The youngest member of the U.S. track and field team at age 16 she won a bronze in 400-meter relay. She then trained hard for the next Olympics. In 1960 Olympic Games she won 100-meter & 200-meter dash and 400-meter relay and set World Record in 100 and 200 meters in semifinals and heats respectively. Thus she became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at a single Olympics. The first-class sprinter instantly became one of the most popular athletes of the Rome Games as well as an International superstar, lauded around the world for her groundbreaking achievements. However this was not possible without her strong determination and will power and sheer grit to overcome her disabilities to achieve something which seemed next to impossible for her. Later she went on to teach, coach and run a community centre. She was included into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. In her own words Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday. 32 Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this nation: The potential for greatness lives within each of us Wilma Rudolph

39 An Interview with Shri H. C. Sati (Retd. General Manager) Allahabad Bank 1) What prompted you to join Allahabad Bank after getting a first class from G.B. Pant University? After graduating in Rural Banking and Agricultural Economics from G. B. Pant University I pursued M.Sc. in Agriculture. Meantime, while continuing post graduation, I got a job with Nainital Bank in Pithoragarh. In those days, Banking jobs were very lucrative as the pay package was better than govt sector and my guide pursued me to join Bank. Keeping in view the true service to society especially to the downtrodden, Banking is the best place to serve. But my association with Nainital Bank was for a very short period of 8 months and my appointment with Allahabad Bank was 16th in the series of jobs offered to me after passing out from Pant Nagar. My first posting with Allahabad Bank was as Agriculture Field Officer in Meerut. 2) What were your interests at the time of joining the Bank vis-a-vis now? Throughout my professional life, my interests remained focussed to regular studies (2 2 ½ hours per day) and keeping abreast with technological changes in Banking industry. However, with the ever rising responsibilities, the time for studies has reduced considerably and now confined to half an hour including reading news papers in the morning. Besides this, I am associated with the Art Of Living since I learned Pranayam and Sudarshan Kriya and still perform the same on every day basis. My inclination to Yoga and Pranayam started since my joining the Divine Life Society way back in I also happened to be best swimmer during my college days. 3) A memory which moved you, please elaborate. After two years of my joining in Allahabad Bank, I got an opportunity to closely observe the appraisal of a credit proposal in Mussorie where Dr Bikash Ghosh and Shri Prabir Moulik (Retd. General Managers of Allahabad Bank) visited from Head Office to appraise this proposal. The working style and level of dedication of my seniors moved me like anything and it was a real learning experience for me. It was then that I learnt the nitty-gritty of an appraisal which continued all through my career. Taking new challenges were an integral part of my professional career. When promoted as Chief Manager, I was given the assignment in Govt Business Department which was totally different than the credit field where I had an expertise. There was huge outstanding of un-reconciled RBI Bonds and suspense pension accounts and I realised huge amount which was lying outstanding for last so many years. Bank had faith on me which ultimately I was able to do in 6 months. My efforts brought me promotion from scale-iv to scale-v in the first instance. 4) Your spiritual inclination. I was born and brought up in a religious family. My father was a freedom fighter and my grandfather was a religious person, so spirituality persisted in the family all through. Luckily my spouse also comes from a similar background and strengthened my belief system by inducing spirituality in our children also. Both my sons also have a spiritual inclination and practise Art of Living. This gave me inner strength and confidence to perform my duties diligently and patiently. Life isn t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself George Bernard Shaw 37

40 5) Role of family in your life My family has helped me to maintain my ideologies in life. Since childhood, there was strict discipline at home. I have never reached late to office throughout my career. It was possible because of support from the family. 6) Apart from the scenic beauty of Almora, what is the one thing you miss about it? We belong to Almora in Kumaon region where strong support system exists in the society and people in the hills are known for their simplicity in life. I miss these people. 7) What has changed about our Bank in the past 30 years? Banking industry has changed a lot in past thirty years. In those days, when I began my career with Allahabad Bank, the closing of books used to get extended for months altogether but today everything is taken care by CBS system. Allahabad Bank has many firsts to its credits beginning from Kisan Credit Cards, introduction of Retail Banking Boutiques to promote housing loans, bringing the IPO, FPO and ESPS. There were many hardship branches in the toughest lead districts. But the efforts put at that time are now paying. These branches are very good source of our low cost deposits. 8) As a Zonal Head how did you counsel your employees to give their best? Cordial employee relations are very important as on date. Today, I can say the Bank is having young and vibrant manpower strength and all organisational calls are being accepted whole heartedly by this dedicated work force. At Zonal Office, we tried our best that no leave should be denied (on genuine grounds). At rare times I have had to be tough also. During my career, I was assigned the lead role as Zonal Head of Gonda, Kanpur and Bhopal. Gonda Zone was one of the toughest Zones to manage 79 branches, one Zonal Office and 2 lead bank offices with a work force of only 187 officers and 71 award staff. However, it never proved to be a deterrent. The easy approachability to Zonal Head was ensured. It allowed us to extend best handholding support to employees sailing through tough times. Young work force was properly groomed to take higher responsibilities. Locational training and inspirational programmes were held to boost employee motivation and support. 9) Your favourite sport/ hobby. Swimming and Yoga are my hobbies since childhood. As I had told earlier I was the best swimmer in my college. 10) A movie which you will remember for a lifetime and why? My all time favourite movie is Mother India and I would love to watch it even today. 11) A special event in your banking career which you would like to share. Mudra Loan Camp was organised in Bhopal when I was the Zonal Head there. Chief Minister of the state was the Chief Guest. We created a different identity of Bank in the state. In a span of 18 months we registered a savings bank deposit growth of Rs Crores. Low cost deposit was mobilised from various govt run schemes. Similarly during my tenure in Gonda Zone, we mobilized 1900 Gram Nidhi Accounts in our branches which resulted in mobilizing huge amount in Savings Bank. 12) Any disappointment which you have had with the Bank? None 13) How do you perceive quality of leadership in context of today s competitive world? In today s competitive environment most desirable attribute to success is team efforts. Leadership is nothing but a team building exercise. Employees should have faith on leaders and at the same time, leader should have strong belief on employees. 38 Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow APJ Abdul Kalam

41 A strong and effective succession plan is the key to success for which proper grooming of leaders is required. 14) What motivated you to subscribe fully to Bank s ESPS on the day of your retirement? As regards ESPS, I feel fortunate enough to get this opportunity just 1 day before my superannuation. I could certainly have missed the opportunity if ESPS was not scheduled to begin on 31st January I feel proud to be a part of this exercise. The success of ESPS has shown that employees have faith on the organisation and its a win-win situation for both employer as well as employees. I heartily extend special thanks to top leadership. 15) What message would you like to give to the employees of your organization? Bank is a well built and developed organisation. Here we get opportunity to serve human beings. No service is better than being a public servant. If you enjoy your work you will get satisfaction. Youngsters are advised to put themselves through learning process to update and equip themselves with global developments. Continuous studies and updating oneself is required by taking help of seniors with their experience and expertise. No doubt sincerity and honesty are integral factors for success. Recognitions within the system are well placed. The organisation where I rendered 36 years of service is no less than a mother institution for me. Today I request everyone to give your 100% efforts to support this institution. At the same time, I also urge upon the youngsters that they must be concerned about their health too. Health aspects need not be overlooked at any stage. I personally feel highly obliged to work with this organisation. Interviewed By Dr. Anuja Banerjee Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving - Albert Einstein 39
