1 Women s Programme Pathway Outline 2017 AUT Millennium, 17 Antares Place, Auckland

2 NEW ZEALAND WATER POLO WOMEN S PATHWAY PROGRAMME OUTLINE 2017 The aim of this document is to present the structure to all athletes involved in the New Zealand Women s Pathway Programme (from under 15 years through to Senior Women). Please read this document carefully. If you are selected for any of the Squads in this document, you MUST register before 1 February using the link below: NZWP 2017 WOMEN S PROGRAMME REGISTRATIONS After we have received your registration, your age group manager will be in touch with further information and documents that will need to be completed. Registrations will close on 31 January WHEN AND HOW DO WE SELECT GIRLS? Athletes will initially be identified at two key tournaments: the Pan Pacific Championships (if born in an even year, eg 2000, 2002, 2004 ), or at Under 14 National Championships (if born in an odd year, eg 1999, 2001, ). The even age groups (selected at Pan Pacs) will then participate in Regional Training Centres (RTCs) during term 4 of their Under 14 season. The selection will be reviewed at the end of the Under 14 National Championships. A National Team Squad will be selected at the end of Under 14s. Girls who are participating in the RTCs but NOT selected for the National Team Squad are encouraged to continue with the RTCs. The odd age group (2001, 2003, 2005 ) will continue in RTCs (after their earlier selection at U14 Nationals) and have several RTC Challenges ; where all of the athletes training in the RTCs will come together and train over a 3-day period (once in term 1 and once in term 3). The odd National Team Squads will be selected after Under 16 Nationals. 3 REGIONAL TRAINING CENTRES (RTCs) WHAT ARE THEY? In 2015, we successfully began the first RTC sessions in New Zealand. These sessions ran for Auckland-based players from all age groups from under 15 years to Senior Women. These training sessions gave the athletes the opportunity to train together once a week in their National Team Programmes with athletes from other clubs. The continuing aim of these sessions is to supplement the training the athletes currently do (as club and school commitments come first). We have found these sessions to be very beneficial to the athletes. WHAT ARE WE WORKING TOWARDS? We are identifying athletes who will go on to represent New Zealand at the World Youth and World Junior Championships. Please see the table below which outlines which age groups participate in which World Championship and when they take place. Please note the age groups below are the oldest age groups which can participate; younger athletes could also be selected (eg a born 1999 athlete can play in the 1998 World Championships). Year Born (or younger) World Championships World Championships Year 1998 Youth Junior Youth Junior Youth Junior Youth Junior 2025 As you can see, the even year born athletes participate in the Youth Championships and the odd year groups in the Junior Championships. This is important to understand as it is key to our pathway development. We want our athletes to be prepared for the World Championships. We will talk later on about how we will adapt our Pathway to complement the World Championship structure. 3 P a g e

37 QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.. WHAT HAPPENS NOW? If you are selected in any of the above RTCs or National Team Squads you must register using the link on page 1. Once you have registered, the manager from your age group will be in touch with a basic outline of the Programme working towards your target championships. (This is just a basic outline and can change under the direction of the National Teams Director). Registrations will close on 31 January WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE SELECTED IN A DIFFERENT AGE GROUP SQUAD? If you are selected in an older Squad (eg a born 2002 in a 2001 regional training group), you will continue with that group until your National Team Squad is announced. You will then join the Squad which participates first at a World Championships. For example, a 2002 selected into the Regional Training Squads for 2001, will train with the 2001 Squad until the 2002 Squads are selected. She will then train with the 2002 Squad as their World Championships are in 2020 (with the 2001 World Championships being in 2021). However if a 2002 born girl is selected in the 2000 born Squad, then she will remain in the 2000 Squad (as the World Championships are in 2018). WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF I AM IN AN RTC SQUAD AND NOT SELECTED TO TRIAL FOR THE NZ SQUAD? It means that we see you have future potential to be a part of our Programme. This way you have the opportunity to work with our coaches on a regular basis. I AM FROM A SMALL REGION WHERE DO I GET RTC TRAINING? We are working hard with the regions to try and establish these sessions nationwide. We now have them up running in Auckland, Wellington and /. WHAT IS THE NZWP RTC DEVELOPMENT TEAM? The NZWP RTC Development team is selected to participate in the state championships in Australia. This has been introduced for the Junior Squads (99, 01, 03s) of girls who haven t been selected in the older Youth Squad (e.g. an 01 selected into the 02 Squad). Girls who are selected into the older Squads WILL NOT be eligible for the NZWP RTC Development team. This is a new part of the Programme to try and help develop more of the Junior Squad years. 37 P a g e
