COACH & TEAM SELECTION PROCESS

COACHING APPOINTMENTS Age Group Boys Girls 14&U Federico Ulivi Nicola Johnson Stevie Yule Hannah Olsen 16&U Rhys Howden Kristina Shearer Zac Hudson Chloe Hogan 18&U Bjorn Galjaardt Emma Jackson Dmitry Gorshkov Kate Gynther 20&U Simon Daley Quality of coaches and mix of experience & developing coaches including former & current Olympians Earlier appointment of Head Coaches however the preference was to appoint both HC & Developing Coaches by October. We would need to be mindful of some coaches ability to commit to the program early when work, personal circumstance may not be known Introduction of a coach information session & coach induction would assist in providing an outline of commitment required and expectations to interested candidates and appointed coaches. Option to explore appointment of coaches to the same age group for two years for continuity

SQUAD & TEAM SELECTION The introduction of the new selection process was widely seen as a positive initiative, particularly the opportunity for the involvement of club coaches in a series of meeting throughout the season. It was identified that there is an opportunity to be more involved in the Qld Schools Program. The earlier appointment of Head Coaches enabled them to watch athletes across a wider range of games/events and track their progress throughout the season. Information sessions were again well received and provided a great opportunity to provide consistent information to players, coaches, club officials and parents and the use of the live stream enabled regional athlete/parents to access the information at the same time as SEQ. Suggestion from coaches of open training days/benchmarking throughout BWPI season. This would allow coaches to see athletes working under them and how they respond. E.g. Coach advises in December that a particular athlete needs to improve their swimming. This allows time for this to be rectified rather than this being identified following selection. Given the number of players who were unavailable/dropped out, the option for a selection EOI at the beginning of the season was discussed to ensure only those players committed to playing for Queensland were considered A final selection panel meeting (WPQ Athlete Development Officer, Head of Participation & Pathways & QAS Gender Coach) rather than approval prior to ratification by CEO.

SQUAD & TEAM SELECTION Feedback from coaches to athletes who requested it was managed well. Suggestion to set final date for any feedback. Opportunity to introduce a self reflection task as part of the feedback process. Feedback provided across each of the selection criteria areas to athletes on request. Investigate completing post tour interviews, surveys and team debrief on the final day of the tour. Late schedule clashes with WPA camps/tours despite WPQ s efforts to mitigate this with WPA and athletes resulted in a number of sate/nationally identified athletes not competing.

TRAINING & TEAM PREPARATION

TRAINING & PREPARATION Coaches unanimously agreed that consistent, weekly training lead to overall athlete improvement however the opportunity to look at some weekend camp based training was of interest. Pool space was identified as a challenge for some periods throughout the training phase opportunity to schedule the Maroon & White teams on staggered start times to allow for a smaller group in the pool, more individual focus and the Head Coach able to work more closely with the Developing Coach e.g. Maroon 5.30pm 7pm & White 6.30pm 8pm. Progression from Squads to Teams was seen as a positive. Squad players to be charged a training fee. Opportunity to find a GK coach that can rotate between teams across the training period A consistent training schedule with limited changes was preferred by athletes/parents Training camp in NZ was seen as beneficial. South Australia s late withdrawal was disappointing and although a training camp was still scheduled for U14/U18, an opportunity to compete against another state/international team(s) would have been preferred. QAS support was again invaluable, particularly the integration with training and use of Somerville House pool. Dmitry travelling overseas during the preparation period due to family circumstances was unfortunate but managed well by Bjorn. Billeting experience seen as a positive for the athletes communication of this process earlier will mitigate many of the concerns in the future. October will be targeted for parent/athlete information session for 2018/19 program

PAN PACIFIC YOUTH WATER POLO FESTIVAL

TOUR OPERATIONS Early planning (commenced in October 2017) and competitive flight pricing due to early booking. Following visit to Auckland, New Zealand Water Polo contacted WPQ Office and advised that all enquiries and bookings must be made through NZWP. Selection of Epsom Grammar School/St Cuthbert s as accommodation providers was made by NZWP Flight times selected following a meeting with John Payne (CEO) & Eelco Uri (National Pathway Manager) who advised games would be completed by 4pm on the final day of competition. Flight times provided to NZWP in February 2018 and again in June 2018 prior to the release of the draw on 22 nd June for feedback. Public release of the draw on Monday 25 th June without notification from NZWP. Flights Virgin Australia were excellent and very helpful & accommodating. Late cancellation of a flight by Virgin split the arrival in Auckland. Discussion with Virgin Groups to identify most efficient way to book the large group to mitigate issues in the event of cancellations. Behaviour on the return flight on 17 th July was a major concern. Athletes to be briefed prior to boarding of the obligations/responsibilities whilst travelling with Queensland. Bus transport was excellent quality of the vehicle and the ability to transport a single team & coach in one vehicle. Provided independence for each team to move between accommodation and venues. Save $4500 in delivery charges by managing this internally.

TOUR OPERATIONS State team portal as the information hub enabled athletes and parents to have access to up-to-date information. Need to review the Teamer App and look at alternate solutions given the difficulties experienced by some teams in gaining access and information. Currently investigating Team App. Tour Cost has been identified as an issue by some parents. Introduction of EziDebit to manage payment plans ensured the administration of this process was more efficient. Qld fee cheaper than NSW by $500+ Epsom Grammar/St Cuthbert's issues identified with size of beds in some rooms, quality & quantity of food. WPQ to communicate with kitchen staff prior to tour to have greater visibility of the menu. Coaches agreed that athletes need to be educated on the importance of nutrition and strategies for eating/taking food when involved in a tournament. Uniform BLK/Delfina gear was excellent quality and ensured the team looked professional. Some parents have raised the issue of being allocated the uniform if athletes already have it from a previous year. Late arrival of gear due to customs issue was disappointing. Improved communication regarding the roles staff/volunteers perform throughout the tour. Some parents and coaches raised the issues of chaperones v team managers. WPQ will discuss the venue manager concept employed by WPNSW to see if there is any learning from them that may be of value. Cap Presentation ceremony following the tour was an excellent event and good way to complete the experience.

COMPETITION The draw including late notification, seedings and finals schedule was a concern for all coaches. Must include crossover matches. The draw also didn t allow for Head Coaches to work with Development Coaches as initially stated due to NZWP not adhering to their earlier communication regarding venue allocation Schedule of one team playing the early match each day is unfair Refereeing needs to be addressed. Too physical and also the referees did too many games. Weren t always professional at the end of the day Table officials for own game not the game after Appoint referees to table for medal matches Technical delegate required at each pool
