Aquino III admitted yesterday that most of the government s requests to the United Nations to bolster the security of the Filipino peacekeepers in Golan Heights were turned down. Prior to the recent decision of the Philippine government to withdraw the Filipino contingent to UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan Heights, Aquino had said that his administration would ask UN to improve the safety of the peacekeeping force after about 30 Filipino soldiers were captured by Syrian rebels in March and May this year. For the longest time, we have sought permission to arm our soldiers with higher-powered guns, given the rise in fighting in the area we have been tasked to protect, the president said in a speech in an event in Malacanang, the presidential palace. He expressed support on the action taken by the Filipino peacekeepers who were figured in a standoff with Syrian rebels in Golan Heights late last month. AFP China warns citizens to avoid Philippines MANILA: China warned its nationals to avoid visiting the Philippines, citing a foiled bomb plot against the Chinese embassy in Manila and the danger of criminal gangs. Given the worsened security situation in the Philippines, the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Chinese citizens not to travel to the Philippines for the time being, a ministry statement said. The warning came after three men were arrested last week over an alleged plot to bomb the Chinese embassy, the international airport and the business premises of ethnic Chinese tycoons. In Beijing, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on Friday urged the Philippine government to do more to protect Chinese citizens. Aside from the alleged bomb plot, Hua cited criminal gangs who had targeted Chinese citizens and businesses. Philippine Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said last week that the bomb plot may be linked to a fringe politician who had been involved in a string of anti-chinese protests. However the Philippine military dismissed the alleged bomb plot, calling the fringe politician a crank who posed no real danger and saying his bombs were merely firecrackers. Police arrested him but then quickly released him. Diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines have been extremely tense in recent years due to a dispute over competing territorial claims in the South China Sea. In response to the travel warning, the Philippine foreign ministry released a statement saying it had been liaising with Chinese diplomats to ease their concerns. Many foreign governments warn their nationals to avoid large parts of the southern Philippines due to the threats of kidnapping, however there are no blanket advisories similar to China s to avoid the entire country. The travel warning was released just before reports emerged that armed men abducted an 18-year-old Chinese man on the strife-torn southern island of Mindanao late on Thursday. Local police spokesman Senior Inspector Leo Castillo said the gunmen had not been identified but it was believed to be another case of kidnapping for ransom, a common crime in the south committed by Muslim rebels. Castillo said the parents of the abductee, a store manager, were Chinese nationals. However a spokeswoman at the Chinese embassy in Manila said Friday that diplomats were still trying to confirm if the abducted man was a Chinese citizen. Chinese tourist arrivals in the first half of 2014 rose 13.6 percent year on year to 226,163, the third highest, just behind South Koreans and Americans, according to the Philippine government. AFP

T h e c e n t r a l b a n k s a i d i t r a i s e d i t s overnight borrowing and lending rates by 25 basis points to 4. 0 and 6. 0 percent respectively, the same increment as the last increase on July 31. The Monetary Board s decision is based on the assessment that the inflation target, particularly for 2015, remains at risk, the bank said in a statement. It was now likely the Philippines would hit the higher end of its inflation target range of percent, it added. It said there were price pressures arising from possible further increases in food prices due to tight domestic supply, as well as pending petitions for higher utility rates and potential power shortages. It was very disturbing to read the headlines of the newspapers screaming over a crime committed while if it was solved, a small story of it will appear inside, on page 20, saad ng Pangulo. Wala tayo sa Pilipinas, pero, sa araw-araw na ginawa ng Diyos, manuod ka sa mga balitang dala ng ABS at ng GMA networks punong puno ng crime news ang kanilang mga balita sa atin. Tapos heto si Pangulong Noynoy, okay lang daw, maayos ang lagay ng peace in order sa bansa. Pangalawang beses ko nang na-tackle ang issue ng peace in order, dahil hindi ako makapag-pigil na hindi ako mag-sulat ng artikulong ito sa pangalawang pagkakataon. Nakaka-alarma na nga talaga ang kriminalidad sa bansa. Hindi mo alam, huwag naman sana, sa susunod na manunuod ka ng balita, laman na rin ng balitang krimen ang ating mga kamag-anakan doon (God forbid). Ilang rape cases na ba ang reported sa loob ng ilang buwan lang? Ang dami na...ang ibang biktima, wala pang kamuwang muwang sa mundo dahil one, two years old pa lamang. Biktima na ng mga karumaldumal na karahasan at krimen, tapos sasabihin sa atin ni Aquino, aba y hindi lang naman ito nagaganap sa kasalukuyan noon pa ito problema na ng bansa. Oo naman, alam namin iyan Mr President, pero hindi ba dapat, ang goal ng administrasyon mo ay mapababa ang krimen? Hindi naman ganun e, nakikita namin na tumataas! Harapin natin ang totoo, bigyan ng solusyon, huwag naman sanang puro na lang pagtatanggol sa iyong mga appointees, kung may-mali, itama, kung mayroong pagkukulang harapin ito ng maayos at huwag nang mangatuwiran pa ng baligtad at mapangutya! Alam ng lahat ang ugat ng krimen. Kahirapan. Paano ito malulusutan? Leadership! Kung ikaw ang leader inaasahan ka ng iyong mga constituencies na dadalhin mo sila sa tamang landas at tuwid na daan, tulad ng iyong pangako! Papunta nga ba tayo doon, o baka sa dulo ay mayroong bangin? ewan kung bakit ganito ang kalakaran natin sa bayan ni Juan. Nakakasawa at nakakapanghina na ng todo kaya tama ang sabi ni robin Padilla, sawang sawa na siya sa walang tigil na pulitika at patuloy na pag-gapang pababa ng bansa at paghihirap ng kanyang mga kababayan.
