PSN Philippines expects to win UN South China Sea case MANILA: The Philippines expects a United Nations tribunal to rule in its favour in an increasingly fraught dispute with China over territories in the South China Sea, a presidential spokeswoman said yesterday. Manila will argue its position against Beijing s claim over most of the resource-rich sea at The Hague on July 7 to 13. China has refused to participate in the arbitration proceedings. The upcoming hearings will decide whether the tribunal has jurisdiction over the case. We prepared a strong case. We believe we stand on strong legal ground, presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte told government radio. We believe the tribunal will look at our case with favour. We are confident of the Philippine position on this matter. Philippine foreign secretary Albert del Rosario will lead a government delegation to The Hague, assisted by US-based lawyers, foreign affairs spokesman Charles Jose said. AFP Manila charges crew, owners of sunk ferry with murder MANILA: Philippine police have filed murder charges against the owner and crew of a passenger ferry that capsized and left 59 dead, an official said yesterday. The charges were filed late on Friday in the central city of Ormoc over the sinking of the Kim Nirvana ship, according to regional police head Chief Superintendent Asher Dolina. An initial police investigation and interviews with survivors showed the vessel abruptly turned in waters off the central port of Ormoc on Thursday, causing it to capsize, Dolina told AFP. They were not careful, showing there was an intent to kill. They were reckless on purpose, Dolina said. A total of nineteen people were charged, including ship operator Joge Bong Zarco, captain Warren Oliviero, and 17 crew members, according to Dolina. Under Philippine law, murder is punishable by up to 40 years imprisonment. The police investigation is separate from a coast guard inquiry, which will primarily determine the cause of the mishap. However, the coast guard may also recommend criminal and administrative charges. We filed the charges as soon as we could because we don t want the suspects to leave the country, Dolina said. Fifty-six people were confirmed dead from the sinking, Ormoc city councillor Godiardo Ebcas told AFP. 2 SUNDAY, JULY 5, Pinoy assistant instructors hold Jumping and Flowin group class KUWAIT: Pinoy assistant instructors in cooperation with Pilates and More Gym held an hour and half workout featuring power packed Jumping paired with broad lower body workout Flowin Friday morning at the Pilates and More Gym located at the mezzanine floor of Emall in Hawally. Twenty five participants both instructors and non instructors attended the so called event and led by four highly competitive and certified fitness trainers. The event kicked off with a brief introduction by the main organizer and founder of the Gym Team followed by safety instructions delivered by trainers Janice Capili and Marissa Tambis. The warm-up segment composed of low impact routines on specially made trampolines and later progressed to set of advanced moves on increased music tempo. A brief combination of abdominal workout and stretching ended the first segment. A short break followed after the workout. Instructors Martisa Vendiola, Roxanne Samiana and Olivia Ledesma gave short information of Flowin, its benefits and effects in toning the lower body. Certificates of participation were awarded to attendees by the trainers. We congratulate those who came to participate in the event and thank the Gym Team for spearheading the project. I also thank the trainers for having shown tremendous enthusiasm sharing the expertise to the attendees. The Original Pin Killers known as silent killer team stopped the struggling Swooping Eagles and the Asian Air Safari repressed the soundless Magnum Other triumphant teams were LEAF, Bowlersmate and Travel Club. The peerless UAE Exchange team tamed the fearless Mangaf Strikers in their collision at Lanes 11 & 12. In the first two games the Remittance King taught the Apprentice a lesson with staggering scores of resulting to 464 points difference but the courageous Mangaf Strikers retaliated in the third game and outsmarted UAE Exchange After the final count the result was in favor of the remittance king with the able leadership of Bader Malalah (551), supported by Freddie Santos (532), Rani Skeik (510), Renato Pante (510), Rudy de Lima and Mariotte Vito. Based on Forbes Magazine s 16th annual Celebrity 100 ranking of the world s top-earning celebrities (found at Pacquiao - with estimated earnings of $160 million - ranked next only to his American arch-rival Floyd Mayweather who topped this year s list with $300 million in earnings. Forbes has released its Celebrity 100 list every year since 1999 as a tally of the most powerful celebrities from the worlds of movies, television, music, sports and books on their earnings and overall media footprint. ADVERTISEMENT This list measures and ranks the earnings of the highest-paid entertainers on the planet over the past 12 months. Earnings are measured based entirely on earnings over the last year. Earnings consisted of pretax income between June 1, 2014 and June 1, 2015 while management, agent and attorney fees were not deducted. The result is the definitive index of who s making what in the global business of fame, the magazine said. For the first time, Forbes said the Celebrity 100 list is truly international as it had included talent from across the entire entertainment world - from Hollywood to Bollywood - in its ranking.
