I.S.303 Presents November, 2016 Principal s Message From Ms. Amador It seems as if we are constantly asked to reinvent ourselves. As we consider the demands life bestows upon us, we can't help but to consider what our new and improved self would be. May I suggest that we look at this through a totally different lens. There are so many great practices that we've all developed along the way, that looking on how to build on these, places us in the "just right" frame of mind. What do I do well? "What can I learn?" I challenge you all to capitalize on your talent and start a movement here at 303 to involve parents. A yoga movement in starting soon. What movement can you start to involve parents? Life is a verb, not a noun. -Charlotte In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, the students of I.S. 303 were gearing up to make sure that those less fortunate had a happy holiday. Ms. Amador and Mr. Caggiano worked tirelessly in conjunction with the NYPD Explorers program to make sure that care packages were put together. These packages included frozen turkeys and other foods that would allow for those in need and their families to have a happy holiday. The packages were assembled by the I.S. 303 members of the NYPD Explorers. The NYPD van came to pick up the packages and the students a day before we left for the Thanksgiving break. The areas where the packages were delivered included Brighton Beach and Coney Island. When asked about the project, Mr. Caggiano said We are so thankful for all we have here at I.S It is a wonderful and warm feeling to know that we are bringing smiles to people s faces. Everyone deserves a happy and healthy Thanksgiving with their families. By: Rosamarie Garces, 7-217
Page 2 One W orking Unit By: Andy Wang The smell of gunpowder fills the crying battlefield of The Ukraine with the screams of people from both sides mixed with fear that leak from them. Explosions from tanks and artilleries fire into the dusty sky as the battle continue going until one side is defeated. These are the conflicts that are going on in the Ukraine with Russian separatists. Many of the Ukraine soldiers are entrenched in the front line in the Eastern Ukraine where they exchange small arms and artillery fire with the separatists every day. Many towns were destroyed and many Ukrainians were killed from the invasions at night. Those who survived have lost their money and have nowhere to go. 9,700 were killed, 2,040 were civilians, and 3,249 were Ukrainian soldiers. Approximately were Russian soldiers. Nato and Canada are helping the Ukrainians with ammo, supplies, and firearms. Russia is helping the separatists, making this a proxy war. A proxy war is an opposing country avoiding direct war by supporting the country that serves their interests. This means that two countries that hate each other help the country to fight the other country without having a direct war. Because of this proxy war, many Ukrainians fled from their country and went to other countries like the United States. By: Maksym Makoviychuk A cockatoo is a parrot that is one of the 21 species belonging to the bird family. Along with the PSIT- TACIFORMES (true parrots) and the STRIGOPEDIA (large New Zealand parrots), they make up the order (parrots). The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of WALLACEA to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia. Cockatoos are recognizable by their showy crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colorful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with colored features in the crest, cheeks or tail. On average they are larger than other parrots; however, the cockatiel, the smallest cockatoo species, is a small bird. The phylogenetic position of the cockatiel remains unresolved, other than that it is one of the earliest offshoots of the cockatoo lineage. The remaining species are in two main groups called Calyptorhynchus. The second and larger branch is formed by the genus cacatua, comprising 11 species of white-plumaged cockatoos and four monotypic genera that branched off earlier; namely the pink and white Major Mitchell's cockatoo, the pink and grey galah, the mainly grey gang-gang cockatoo and the large black-plumaged palm cockatoo.

Aries: March 21st April 19th: Monthly Horoscopes with Ms. W November Edition You get the answers you need much more quickly on Monday if you brainstorm with a group of friends or classmates. You're feeling extremely sensitive on Tuesday and Wednesday, which means you take everything personally. Try to laugh along with everyone else even if you're secretly hurting inside. You get a nice ego boost from the Moon being in your sign on Thursday and Friday, though, and it looks like emotional smooth sailing on Saturday and Sunday as well. Taurus: April 20th May 20th: How Monday goes is up to you. If you have a positive outcome, the sky's the limit. Organization is your best friend on Tuesday and Wednesday. Clean out that closet and throw out all the stuff you don't need to make room for some new stuff! You're going to have to be a little more flexible than usual on Thursday and Friday, because your friends keep changing the plan. Have fun this weekend! Gemini: May 21st June 20th: Monday is a good day to share your innermost thoughts with your best friend. There's very little chance that he or she will spill the beans. Your reputation is on the line on Tuesday and Wednesday, so be sure you're proud of everything you put your name on. The Moon makes you a bit of an exhibitionist on Thursday and Friday, but be careful that you don't do the wrong thing in front of someone who could really make your life miserable. Cancer: June 21st July 22nd: You're definitely tempted on Monday, but you don't have to give in. Use your willpower to say no. You won't be sorry. You want something so badly you can almost taste it on Tuesday and Wednesday, but some things just aren't meant to be. Don't try to hide your disappointment - getting it out will help you move on. The end of the week can be challenging, especially Saturday and Sunday. Someone wants to boss you around, but you aren't taking it! Leo: July 23rd August 22nd: You just scratch the surface of things on Monday, but by Tuesday and Wednesday you're ready to get to the bottom of what's really been bothering you. The females in your life can help on these days if you let them. You get exactly what you ask for on Thursday and Friday, which is a nice change of pace. The Moon makes everything a little more structured over the weekend, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. You just scratch the surface of things on Monday, but by Tuesday and Wednesday you're ready to get to the bottom of what's really been bothering you. The females in your life can help on these days if you let them. You get exactly what you ask for on Thursday and Friday, which is a nice change of pace. The Moon makes everything a little more structured over the weekend, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Virgo: August 23rd September 22nd: The things you thought you could never do suddenly seem possible at the beginning of the week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday. If you keep your eye on your main goal instead of getting bogged down in details, there's very little you can't accomplish. A change will do you good between Thursday and Saturday, especially one that alters your appearance in some way. Even if you completely change your style, you're still you on the inside, right?
Libra: September 23rd October 22nd: You do best hanging out with people who think like you do on Monday. It isn't that you're close-minded - it's just that you feel more comfortable expressing yourself when you know you won't be laughed at. You feel restricted somehow on Tuesday and Wednesday, but you're at your confident best between Thursday and Saturday. Sunday brings some emotions that you might not be able to handle. Wait until another time to express yourself. Scorpio: October 23rd November 21st: Pay attention to everything on Monday - even the smallest detail could matter. If you've got a friend in a position to help you on Tuesday and Wednesday, accept their offer. You could try to do it alone, but why bother? The tables are turned and you're in a good position to help other people between Thursday and Saturday. Don't expect a thank-you, but be sure to be appreciative when you do get one. You're in your element on Sunday. Do something creative. Sagittarius: November 22nd December 21st: You get across the finish line first on Monday, but you aren't quite as quick on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rely on words of encouragement from your friends to help you keep the correct pace. Thursday through Saturday is a good time to explore your intellectual side, which might mean making a trip to the library or subscribing to an online news service. Knowledge is power, and over the weekend you somehow manage to impress everyone with your smarts! Capricorn: December 22nd January 19th: Risks just don't pay off on Monday, so be ready to turn someone down when they ask you to step outside your comfort zone. You can reach a state of enlightenment on Tuesday and Wednesday, but you have to be willing to open your heart - and your head - to the message. There's no way to avoid power struggles between Thursday and Friday, so just go along with what your parents or teachers say. You get an interesting on Sunday, but is it for real? Aquarius January 20th-Febuaray 18th: It might seem like you and a new person doesn t see eye to eye on Monday, but you have way more in common than you might think. Open yourself up to new possibilities on Tuesday and Wednesday. You'll go far if you keep an open mind. The end of the week brings someone eccentric into your life, but don't count him or her out. This person could teach you something important sometime between Thursday and Saturday. Pisces February 19th - March 20th: Someone might try to invade your privacy on Monday, so keep all of your written secrets safe. The Moon upsets your balance on Tuesday and Wednesday, so try not to do too many things at once. You'll end up doing all of them poorly. Thursday through Saturday is a more productive time, especially if you have homework or personal projects that you need to finish. Your friends matter most on Sunday

By: Daniel Brown What s that game right there? That is one of the top 5 most wanted games for Christmas! What are the other top 5 games? Well, there is Infinity Warfare which is first on the list because it is the newest black ops and because it s the main game for Team Death Match. This a game in which you have a to choose any gun you want and fight the other team just like in a war. The second best game is FIFA 17, which is one of the best and newest from the FIFA family. If you don t know what FIFA is, it is basically soccer but it has more new players than you may see in another game. In FIFA, there are rumors you can create your own character and keep playing to record his stats which would be a cool addition. The third best game is Gears of War, which is basically like Call Of Duty but has different graphics and has super cool guns. In Gears Of War, you can kill other players like in a war but the controls are a little bit harder and the guns and other weapons are really strong. The fourth best game is Mine Craft, which is old but is becoming popular again. Mine Craft's new owner Microsoft is adding new updates to the game. They even added polar bears which aren t bad because instead of fishing for fish you can just kill a polar bear. That makes it much easier. The fifth best game is Destiny. This one is super fun and lots of people love it due to its graphics. Destiny has many cool features like its multiplayer action. Also, in the game you can craft guns and swords. The higher your level the stronger you will be. By: Andy Wang Want a cute robot that can say your name and have emotion? Well then meet Cozmo the world s first robot to ever have emotions. 8 As a lifelong wrestling fan, it was certainly an honor to have one of the all time great personalities visit I.S Joel Gertner was a legendary character in ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling). It was there where he managed the most decorated tag team of all time The Dudley Boys. He would add comic relief to the sport and would wow the crowds with his comical introductions. Joel is a Brooklyn native that hails from Marine Park. He went to Poly Prep and Cornell University. He also has a background in radio and broadcasting. I had the privilege of meeting him many times through the years. At our last meeting, I invited him to I.S. 303 to speak with the students during Red Ribbon week on October 28th. Joel agreed, and the stage was set. Upon his arrival here, I walked Joel around to speak with the classes about the importance of anti bullying and staying in school. We gave out red ribbons that said United We Stand Against Bullying & Drugs. Many of the students recognized him from his many television appearances. He graciously signed autographs and took photos with all students that asked. One of the highlights of Joel s visit was when he spoke about how he managed the ultimate bullies, The Dudley Boys. He explained how wrestling is pure entertainment and that in real life we all must respect each other. After visiting the classrooms, it was onto the lunchroom where Joel addressed the eighth grade. He spoke of the importance of graduating and going on to high school and college. Red Ribbon week was certainly a success that will be not be forgotten by all those that were involved. A special thanks to Joel Gertner for taking the time out of his busy schedule to come to I.S. 303 and for making Red Ribbon week a huge success. By: Mr. Dobin
