5 Site Preparation Remove existg vegetation from the proposed slopes. Excavate and shape the slope section. Place, compact and shape required earth fill. Dig toe- trenches at the crest and perimeter of the slope as required. Figure 1 Slope Preparation Filter Protection and Draage Install the specified geotextile over the prepared slope. See Figure 2. Adequately overlap adjacent sections and p. Ensure geotextile is placed perimeter toe- trenches. P the edges of the geotextile sections to hibit movement. Figure 2 Geotextile Placement Installation of Geoweb Sections Drive a row of anchor stakes along the upper edge of the proposed slope protection area. Space the stakes at pre-determed sgle cell centers. See Geoweb system Anchor Spacg Charts on pages Partially expand the Geoweb section and place each end cell of the section over its correspondg edge stake. When ATRA Anchors are used, ensure the ATRA Clip arm passes over the cell wall. See Figure 3. Figure 3 ATRA Stake Edge Restrat 29-AUG-02 COPYRIGHT PRESTO PRODUCTS COMPANY PAGE 1 OF 15
6 Expand the Geoweb section down the slope to the section s specified length. See Figure 4. Figure 4 Placement of Geoweb Section Hold the fully expanded sections open usg one of the followg: a) ATRA Anchors, straight stakes or J-Ps (permanent or temporary). See Figure 5. b) Infill several peripheral cells. c) Other acceptable methods may also be used. Figure 5 ATRA Stake Installation Methods Align and terleaf edges of adjog Geoweb sections, ensurg that the upper surfaces of adjog sections are flush. Should additional field drillg be required, a 10 mm (3/8 ) diameter spur mache bit with a brad and lip pot is recommended. Bit length should exceed the thickness of the unexpanded Geoweb section. Individual tendons are typically cut to a length = [1.15 x expanded Geoweb section length + 1 m (3 ft)] to allow for loops and anchor connections. Feed dividual tendons through pre-drilled holes the collapsed Geoweb sections prior to section expansion. See Figure 10. Special Tendon Insertion Methods: Use a short length of 2.5 mm (12 gauge) wire with an elongated loop at one end as a threadg needle to pull the leadg end of the tendon through the Geoweb section. See Figure 11. Tendon from spool Collapsed pre-drilled Geoweb section Tendon from spool Figure 10 Tendon Insertion 2. Loop tendon to wire tool 1. Insert wire threadg tool 3. Withdraw tool and tendon Figure 11 Threadg Tendons 2. Feed tendon to pipe Insert a short length of th-wall metal tubg as a smooth guide for the tendon. Once the tendon has been fed through the collapsed Geoweb section, the tube is removed. See Figure 12. Collapsed pre-drilled Geoweb section 1. Insert th-wall pipe section 3. 9 Termatg and Anchorg Tendons There are two standard methods of termatg tendons at an outer edge of Geoweb sections. See Figure 13 and Figure Form Double Loop Knot 2. Tighten the Knot 1. Double-loop knot with stop washer normally used at the toe of the slope. Figure 13 Termation of Integral Tendons 2. Knotted loop - used to attach tendons to a crest or toe anchor. The ATRA Anchor or ATRA Clip when used as a restrag device is recommended. Loop the tendon around and under the arms of the ATRA Clip. 1. Form End Loop 2. Knot the Loop 3. Tighten the Knot Figure 14 End Anchorage of Tendons Internal Anchorg Drive additional ATRA Anchors with selected cells of the expanded Geoweb section at the specified spacg. See Figure 15. Ensure the tendon is under the arm of the ATRA Clip and drive the anchor flush with the base of the cell. Fal drivg of the anchors along a sgle tendon should progress sequence from the itial edge anchor (generally at the crest). The trailg length of tendon should rema un-restraed to avoid over-tensiong of the tendon. The un-restraed tendon end should be termated as illustrated above. Figure 15 Internal Anchors 29-AUG-02 COPYRIGHT PRESTO PRODUCTS COMPANY PAGE 5 OF 15
10 Non-Slip Tendoned Internal Anchorage Geoweb sections can be effectively supported on steep slopes with an array of ternal anchors that are attached to the tegral tendon system. Typical ternal anchors clude: a) ATRA Anchors b) J-ps c) Steel reforcg rods d) Duckbill cable anchors e) Wooden stakes The recommended method of attachment uses the ATRA Anchor and a moorg hitch Presto refers to as the Moore Hitch. See Figure 16. Figure 16 Moore Hitch Non-Slip Connection Crest Anchorage of Tendoned Geoweb Systems Load transfer to crest anchorage is required when a driven anchor array is impractical (e.g. when a geomembrane or impervious material is present). See Figure 17. ATRA restrag clips transfer load from the Geoweb sections to the tendons such cases. See Figure 18. With tendons serted, expand the Geoweb section to position and attach the ATRA Clips at predetermed cell spacg. Attachment of ATRA restrag clips can progress either an up-slope or down-slope direction. Pre-anchor the end of the tendon from which the ATRA Clip attachment commences. Remove all ternal slack from tendons as the ATRA Clips are attached. Precut tendons must be long enough to allow for attachment knots at each clip. Refer to recommendation on page 4. Attachg ATRA restrag clips at the required spacg can be accomplished while the Geoweb section is pre-expanded on a flat surface. The section can then be re-collapsed, attached to crest anchorage, and deployed onto the slope. This method facilitates the stallation of sections on extremely steep slopes. The followg guideles apply to most Geoweb system applications. Non-standard tools and equipment may provide additional benefits some situations. Table 4: Standard Construction Tools for Installation of the Geoweb System Hand Tools Power Tools Concrete Fishg Surveyg Equipment Shovels and spades Heavy-duty drill Bull floats Surveyor s auto-level Rakes and screed bars Circular saw Hand floats Tripod and rod Sledge hammers Percussion hammer Steel trowels Laser beacons Crowbars Stanley-Bostitch stapler Poker vibrators Audio target receiver Utility knives SB wire staples Tampg rods Survey stakes Spikes, nails + lumber Gas generator Markers + spray cans Templates Air compressor Strg-les + spirit level Excavation and Materials Handlg Equipment Conventional excavators, front-end loaders, mi-excavators and skid-steer loaders, equipped with smooth-edged buckets, are normally employed for the stallation of Geoweb systems. Infillg of Geoweb sections can also be carried out with conveyors, chutes and skips. As a rule, the overall rate of stallation relates directly to the speed and efficiency of fill placement and compaction. PAGE 8 OF 15 COPYRIGHT PRESTO PRODUCTS COMPANY 29-AUG-02
13 Compaction Equipment Compaction of slope surfaces prior to stallation of the Geoweb system is normally carried out with: 1) vibratory plate compactor attachments for backhoes, 2) a mobile wch assembly at the slope crest to support a roller or plate compactor, or 3) manual tampg. Slope pre-compaction is primarily tended to mimize sloughg of loose surface topsoil or aggregate fill materials.
