PUTNAM YOUTH IS BELIEVED SLAIN TO PREVENT TALKING Investigation of the slaying of Ridley Carr, 15 at Boma, on Saturday night led officers to the belief the youth had been silenced to prevent him from turning state s evidence. The son of Wade Carr, he was slashed with a knife and fatally stabbed in the heart before he told Toy Carr and Walter Shanks of that district he had been cut by William Hancock, 17, son of Rube Hancock, farmer of near Boma. With Slain Vet: According to the sheriff s office, Carr was one of three persons last seen with Zeb Waller, whose decapitated body was found on the Tennessee Central right of way on July 22. It first appeared that Waller had been killed by a train, but after an investigation it appeared the World War Veteran had been slain. A coroner s jury returned a verdict of murder. Carr was one of three men suspected in the Walter slaying and officers tonight expressed the opinion his companions believed he was about to turn state s evidence In order to prevent this, officers stated his companions are believed to have killed him. Told of Assailant: The stabbing occurred at Shank s store near where a church meeting was in session about 9 o clock Saturday night. Carr lived only long enough to tell the two residents of the Boma section that Hancock had cut him. Residents of Boma, a small town on the railroad, are incensed over the slaying of Carr, but refused to talk, saying they know only what we hear. The body of Carr was prepared for burial at the home and funeral services were held at the Carr graveyard Monday afternoon. The Nashville Tennesseean. A BOY S KILLER GIVES UP: IS IN JAIL WAITING HEARING William Hancock, 17, Held on Charger of Slashing Ridley Carr, 15. LITIGATION STARTED Are Working on Theory That He Was Killed in Effort to Prevent Talking. WITH WALLER DEATH William Hancock, 17, is in the Putnam County jail here awaiting trial Tuesday before Magistrate D. J. Wade, a charge of murdering Ridley Carr, 15, at Shanks store at about 9 o clock Saturday night. Hancock, a son of Rube Hancock, of near Boma, gave up to Hubert Crawford late Tuesday, after a threeday search.

8 Hancock and Carr fought Saturday and Carr was cut and slashed all over his body, and fatally stabbed in the heart. Hancock s hands and face also cut. Carr lived long enough to tell Toy Carr and Walter Shanks residents of that district that Hancock had cut him. Police and officers are making an investigation on that theory that Carr had knowledge of the killing of Zeb Waller. 34, on the night of July 21, whose decapitated body was found on Tennessee Central right of way. Residents of Boma, however, would give no information that would substantiate the theory. It was believed Carr was killed in an effort to prevent the turning of state s evidence. He was the son of Wade Carr, a Boma farmer. Funeral services were held at the residence Monday afternoon and burial was in the Carr graveyard. Putnam County Herald, Cookeville, TN: Thursday, 6 August PETTY, HANCOCK MURDER HEARINGS, BUCKNER CASE FEATURES COURT DOCKET: Two-Hundred Eleven Cases Scheduled For Three Weeks Session Beginning Tuesday: Camp, Holladay To Preside. Virgil Petty, avowed killer of Uncle Matt McDonald, aged 12 th district farmer, and Willie Hancock, youthful slayer of Ridley Carr, and John Buckner, held on charges of incest and rape, will occupy the spotlight of Putnam county s sensational criminal court session which will begin Tuesday for a three weeks duration. Stabbed Youth, Claim: Willie Hancock, 17, of Boma, faces trial on charges of stabbing Ridley Carr, 15, son of Wade Carr, of Boma, on the night of August 1, 1931, at a Holy Roller meeting at Hickey. Testimony at a preliminary hearing for Hancock before Magistrate D. L. Wade showed that Hancock and Carr engaged in a fight near the church, and Hancock slashed Carr and finally killed him by stabbing him in the heart. Hancock s case was continued at the January term of court. Putnam County Herald, Cookeville, TN: Thursday, 12 May JURY PICKED FOR MURDER CASE IN HANCOCK HEARING: Jury for the hearing of Willie Hancock, 17-year old killer of Ridley Carr, 15, near Boma, last August was selected Wednesday afternoon following the charges of Judge Harry Camp to the jury in the Virgil Petty murder trial. Dr. T. J. Smith, who examined the body of Carr shortly after the killing, testified out of order Wednesday afternoon by agreement of the counsel on both sides. He declared that Carr died as a result of a wound inflicted with a sharp instrument: near the heart, and which, possible, entered that vital organ. Wade Carr, father of the slain youth, was the first witness to testify this morning. He is prosecutor in the case. Counsel aiding Atty Gen. E. H. Boyd in the prosecution are John Holladay, Jimmie Clark, and W. L. Swallows. Counsel for the defense are Langford and McKay, and they entered a plea of not guilty in the case, and will contend that the killing was in self defense. First Degree, Claim: True bill returned by the grand jury against Hancock defined the crime as first degree murder. The killing took place at a church meeting at Hickey, near Boma, following an argument in which the two youths allegedly engaged. Witnesses, it was declared, watch the killing and offered no aid to the struggling youth. This report, however, had not been confirmed last Wednesday.

9 The jury for the Hancock case are Wheeler Harp, R. T. Parrott, Mack Hunter, R. T. Boatman, H. C. Carmack, P. C. Smith, Lester King, G. P. Hix, Arthur Grogan, Noah Morgan, E. L. Grooms, and J. H. Watson. Gone But Not Forgotten FATHER, SON HELD FOR DICE GAME KILLING AT BOMA: Sheriff Says Youth Admits Shooting; Preliminary Hearing Today. Edward Lattimore, 21, and his father, Columbus Lattimore, 50, DeKalb countians, are being held in jail here on charges of murder, in connection with the death of Toy Carr, 30, of the 11 th district of Putnam county, which occurred near Boma Sunday. Preliminary hearing for the two men is to be held this afternoon at 1 o clock before Squire Pascal Matheny. Sheriff Poteet who with deputies arrested the Lattimores at their home Sunday night, said that the son admitted that he shot Carr in an argument during a dice game, but did so in self defense. The elder Lattimore admitted being present at the time of the shooting, but denied any part in the slaying. Carr was almost instantly killed by two.38 caliber bullet wounds, one in the abdomen and one in the chest. The murder warrants were swore out by Wade Carr, father of the slain man. Harvey Herrin also was arrested Sunday in connection with the case but was later released. Sheriff Poteet quoted witnesses as saying the elder Lattimore handed the pistol to his son, who then shot Carr. Putnam County Herald, Cookeville, TN: 22 December 1938
