1 HART HERITAGE HERALD Hart Heritage Estates of Forest Hill Rock Spring Road, Forest Hill, MD May 2018 Agnes Schoenberger Mother's Day History Born May 10, 1933 Agnes was the 5th child of ten children, seven girls and three boys. Agnes grew up in Baltimore City near Johns Hopkins Hospital. She attended St. Michaels grammar school and business school. She worked for AT&T for thirty years and retired at age 50. Two years later she went to work for Pimlico and Laurel race tracks in the marketing department, and worked there for 15 years. Agnes moved to Harford County 18 years ago. She was never married but enjoys her fourteen nieces and nephews, twenty eight great and two great great nieces and nephews. She enjoyed going out to lunch and dinner at different resaurants in BelAir every day, she liked taking trips and traveling around the country with her sister, and also enjoyed going to the race track in Delaware and the Casino in Perryville. Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks, to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times; Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mother s Day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support. 2 May Fun Facts May s Birthstone is Emerald. Birth flower is Lily of the Valley. The First Official Memorial Day May. 30, 1868 Do you celebrate Memorial Day? In 1868, Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the grand Army. of the Republic issued what was called General Order Number 11, designating May 30 as a memorial day. He declared it to be "for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land." Where do you suppose that first Memorial Day took place? The first national celebration of Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) took place May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery. The national observance of Memorial Day still takes place there today, with the placing of a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the decoration of each grave with a small American flag. The holiday has changed a bit since it first began, which some argue was even earlier than Logan's dedication. Southern women decorated the graves of soldiers even before the end of the Civil War. After the war, a women's memorial association in Columbus, Mississippi, put flowers on the graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers in 1866, an act of generosity that inspired the poem by Francis Miles Finch, "The Blue and the Grey," published in the Atlantic Monthly. In 1971, federal law changed the observance of the holiday to the last Monday in May and extended it to honor all those who died in American wars. People pay tribute not only with flowers but also with speeches and parades. 3 Our Easter Party We had a nice Easter party; everyone enjoyed Easter trail mix.n the eclairs, decorated Easter cookies, and M&M s, we also all got an Easter bag for munching at night. Orioles Opening Day party We all had a great time watching the first Oriole game of the season and to top it off we won. We enjoyed Hot Dogs, chips, soda pop, and of course popcorn. V O

4 Hart Heritage Activities Pat, Hart heritage estates of We made a lot of goodies this month including, ice cream sundaes, tacos, panzanella salad, and everyone s favorite fried pickles. Fried pickles went so fast I couldn t even get pictures of everyone enjoying them. Yummy! Laura: enjoying her ice cream sundae. No one knew what panzanella salad was; but they really liked it. It is Italian bread salad Rutbrainteaser game. Virginia and Margaret: trying to eat their tacos. Everyone enjoyed the tacos. They said they have not had them in a long time. Virginia and Katherine; enjoying their salad.

5 Craft Corner Sherri and Laura help the residents make Easter bonnets. Some of the ladies wore them on Easter and others have them on their door for a spring decoration. Your Easter Bonnets look great ladies. Virginia and Jeanette: showing off their creations. On Holy Thursday we dyed Easter eggs, everyone had a great time. The residents will be able to eat their eggs [egg salad] for lunch on Good Friday. They looked so pretty!.. Anna: with her bonnet. Nice job Anna. Anna and Virginia, working on the watering can flower pots for our spring tree. You can see their beautiful work on the tree in the dining room.

6 Laura helping Lucy and Lois paint their flower pots. wwe Sherri made bird feeders out of oranges and hung them outside. Unfortunately the squirrels found them and by the next morning had gotten to most of them, now we have fat squirrels. Ann Marie with her bird feeder, the residents put pretty flowers and butterflies on the cords. Clara and Margie joined in the fun too. Virginia and Joann are proud of their feeder. The ladies filled their pots with beautiful spring flowers. They will make it look a little more like spring. Great Job!
