ALWAYS WEAR A SAFETY BELT!!! Twisted Timber Instructions & Warnings When hunting from a tree stand, falls can occur at any time after leaving the ground causing injury or death. Always wear a Fall Arrest System (FAS), comprising a full body harness, at all times after leaving the ground. You must stay connected to the tree at all times after leaving the ground while using climbing or hang-on stands. Single safety belts and chest harnesses are no longer allowed and should never be used. If you are not wearing a full body harness properly attached to the tree to protect you from a fall, do not leave the ground. Read and understand all of the manufacturer s warnings and instructions and use all safety devices provided by the manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer for any questions. Failure to do so could result in injury or death. Never exceed the total weight limit of a tree stand. Never use a tree stand while taking drugs (even prescription drugs) or alcohol. Never use a tree stand during inclement weather such as rain, lightning, windstorms or icy conditions and end your hunt and return to the ground if inclement conditions arise. Never use a tree stand when feeling ill, nauseous or dizzy, or if you have a prior medical condition that could cause a problem i.e., heart condition, joints that lock-up, spinal fusions, etc. or if you are not well rested. Never use a tree stand on a dead, leaning, diseased or loose barked tree or on a utility pole. Never rely on a tree branch for support Never jump or bounce on a tree stand to seat it to the tree. Pull up a bow, backpack, firearm or other equipment only after being secured in the tree stand and a firearm must be pulled up with it unloaded, chamber open and muzzle down. Always inform someone of the hunting location, where the tree stand will be located and the expected duration of the hunt. A signal device, as a mobile phone, radio, whistle, signal flare or personal locator device (PLD) must be on your person and readily available at all times. Inspect the tree stand and all safety devices each time before use and do not store a tree stand outdoors when not in use. Never modify your stand in any way by making repairs, replacing parts, or altering, adding or attaching anything to it except if explicitly authorized in writing by the manufacturer. Practice installing, adjusting and using your tree stand at ground level prior to using it at elevated positions. Instructions (written and video) should be kept in a safe place and reviewed at least annually. It is the responsibility of the tree stand owner to furnish the complete instructions to any person who borrows or purchases the tree stand. The use of a lineman s/climbing belt is required when installing or removing a hang-on tree stand to stabilize the user with the tree. Be sure that the full body harness is attached to tree before stepping down onto the platform. When using a climbing/lineman s belt, be sure not to detach belt until you are on the stand platform, tree strap is installed and your tether has been secured to the tree strap. Correct tightening and adjustments of j-hook and ratchet straps, etc. are critical to stable hang-on tree stand installation. All tree stand contact points must be in contact with the tree before you step onto your stand. Never leave a tree stand in a tree for more than two weeks since weather or animals could cause damage. The elements and excessive U/V exposure can degrade components of stand. Tree growth can also cause stress and damage to j-hook, stand, ratchet and strap. Use a haul line to raise and lower the tree stand. Never climb with anything on your back. A full body harness with lineman s/climbing belt must be worn at all times while installing or removing any hang-on climbing aids. Climbing aids (stick ladders, sectional ladders, steps, etc.) must extend above the platform to allow the user to step down onto the plat form. Never step up to your stand from a climbing aid. Sectional ladders and steps should be spaced on the tree to insure each step is no more than 18 inches apart. Check every stick ladder section connection every time you use the stick ladder before you leave the ground. If stick ladder sections are separating, do not use the stick ladder.

5 FAS (FALL ARREST SYSTEM) Read and understand the manufacturer s warnings, expiration date and instructions on how to use and how to properly adjust the harness. Practice the use of a full body harness at ground level in the presence of a responsible adult to experience the feeling of hanging suspended before using in a hunting environment. The length of the harness tether must be minimized at all times. It should be adjusted so that it is above the head with no slack (snug) in the sitting position and you should have the minimum amount of slack possible when climbing. Never allow the tether strap to get under your chin or around your neck. Failure to follow harness instructions could result in not being able to return to the stand and being suspended in a harness after a fall. If the hunting location is unknown by anyone and communication efforts are unsuccessful, you must have a personal plan for recovery/escape because prolonged suspension in a harness can be fatal. It is important to exercise the legs by pushing against the tree or doing other forms of continuous leg exercises to avoid blood pooling while being suspended. Hunters with varying degrees of physical fitness may require different plans to recover/escape the effects of prolonged suspension. Have a personal plan and practice it in the presence of a responsible adult before leaving the ground. No one escape/rescue plan will work for every hunter on every tree in every circumstance. Only you can determine the best recovery/escape plan for your hunting situation and you must have a recovery /escape plan for you situation before leaving the ground. A suspension relief device must be on your person and readily accessible while using a harness. This device will allow the user to relieve the load on the lower extremities if suspended in a harness and help maintain circulation in the legs and prevent suspension trauma (blood pooling). Be sure to follow manufacturers directions on the safe use of any suspension relief device. Several optional products/devices are available that offer self-recovery or self extraction from a fall when suspended in a harness. Some systems automatically descend the user while others allow user control. One of these products/systems could be considered for use as an additional safety precaution against prolonged suspension and suspension trauma. Be sure to follow the manufacturers' directions on the safe use of these products/systems. Hunt from the ground when self-recovery/escape ability is absent. There is time to make a correct decision on what action to take if a fall occurs while wearing a full body harness. It is important to remember, DO NOT PANIC. Remain calm and implement your practiced rescue, relief and recovery plan. PROPER CARE AND MAINTENANCE: Inspect for defects (damage, rot, corrosion, cracks, freezing, excessive heat, etc.) before every use is required. Do not use if damage is detected or suspected. Twisted Timber recommends periodically re-tightening and/or replacing hardware (supplied by Twisted Timber), including j-hooks, ratchet straps, bolts, nuts, cables and bushings ect. Make certain that all the strap buckles are loose prior to stepping into the harness. Please note that your Scout harness is a step into design. It is designed to go on just like a pair of pants. STEP 4: While holding the harness out in front of you, carefully step through the waist belt into the leg loops one at a time as shown in Figure 6. 14 HARNESS TETHER AND TREE BELT INSTALLATION The proper installation of your tree belt onto your full-body fall arrest harness tether is of paramount importance. WARNING! Installing your fullbody fall arrest harness tether and tree belt in a manner other than outlined here puts you at risk of FIGURE 10 FIGURE 11 bodily harm. Failure to follow these PROPERLY DONNED FULL-BODY PROPERLY DONNED FULL-BODY instructions may result in serious FALL ARREST HARNESS FALL ARREST HARNESS (FRONT VIEW) (REAR VIEW) injury or death! STEP 1: Locate the tree belt (Refer to Figure 1 Page 7). Thread the tree belt through the loop at the end of the harness tether as shown in Figure 12. STEP 2: Wrap the tree belt around the tree trunk as shown in Figure 13. You must install your tree belt at or above eye-level as shown in Figure 13. DO NOT allow the loop to cover the tree belt buckle. Keep the sewn loop a minimum of six (6) inches away from the tree belt buckle. WARNING! The length of the harness tether must be minimized at all times. It should be adjusted so that it is above the head with no slack (snug) in the sitting position and you should have the minimum amount of slack possible when climbing. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death! STEP 3: Secure the tree belt buckle as shown in Figures 14A through 14E. FIGURE 12 THREAD TREE BELT THROUGH HARNESS LANYARD LOOP FIGURE 13 INSTALL TREE BELT AT OR ABOVE EYE-LEVEL FIGURE 14A INSERT TAG END INTO BUCKLE FIGURE 14B PUSH TAG END UNDER FLOATING BAR FIGURE 14C LOOP TAG END OVER FLOATING BAR AND BACK THROUGH BUCKLE FIGURE 14D FIGURE 14E FIGURE 14F PULL TAG END TO TIGHTEN A PROPERLY THREADED BUCK- AN INCORRECTLY THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY LE WILL NOT THREADED BUCKLE SLIP WHEN PRESSURE IS AP-WILL NOT HOLD UNDER PLIED LOAD STEP 4: With the tree belt snugged, make certain it is at or above eye-level. 15 WARNING! This SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness was designed, engineered and manufactured to protect the user during operation and use of their treestand. It is not designed for use in any other manner. This includes, but is not limited to, any other industrial, commercial and/or private use. Such improper use immediately voids the warranty and may result in serious injury or death! WARNING! This SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness was designed as a fall arrest device only. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES USE IT TO LEAN OUT OF YOUR STAND TO AT- TEMPT A DIFFICULT SHOT. Using this product in such a manner may result in serious injury or death! CLIMBING TREESTAND USAGE You must wear your SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness at all times when using a climbing stand. This includes staying connected to the tree at all times while ascending or descending the tree. When using your SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness with a climbing stand you must remember to move the tree belt up and down the tree each time you ascend or descend the tree. To do this, simply loosen the tree belt and slide it either upward or downward (as appropriate for the direction you are climbing). Remember, keep the slack in the harness tether to a minimum as you ascend or descend. FIGURE 15 WARNING! Installing your SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness tether and tree belt in a manner other than outlined here puts you at risk of bodily harm. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death! STEP 1: Prior to stepping onto your climber platform, attach the tree belt (refer to Figure 1 Page 7) around the tree trunk at or above eye level as shown in Figure 15. ATTACH TREE BELT AT OR ABOVE EYE-LEVEL STEP 2: As you climb, slide your tree belt up as shown in Figure 16. Remember, keep the least amount of slack in the assembly as possible. A tight harness tether greatly reduces the distance you can travel should you experience a fall while climbing. When descending, simply reverse this Step. FIGURE 16 SLIDING TREE BELT UP AS YOU CLIMB CLIMBING BELT/SUSPENSION RELIEF SYSTEM (SRS) SETUP AND USAGE You will find an integrated Climbing Belt/Suspension Relief System (SRS) included with your SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness (refer to Figure 2). This climbing belt is provided to secure you while installing and/or using hang-on or lock-on style treestands. WARNING! Installing your SCOUT full-body fall arrest climbing belt/srs in a manner other than outlined here puts the user at serious risk of bodily harm. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death! STEP 1: Locate the climbing belt/srs as shown in Figure 2. With your SCOUT full-body fall arrest harness donned as previously outlined in this Instruction Manual, wrap the tag end of the climbing belt/srs around the tree trunk and into the climbing belt/srs buckle on the full body fall arrest harness as shown in Figure 17. Thread the buckle as shown in Figures 14A-14E. 10

16 STEP 2: Tighten the climbing belt/srs to a comfortable length as shown in Figure 17. STEP 3: Use your climbing belt/srs when installing or removing hang-on or lock-on style treestands and their climbing aids (e.g., stick ladders, sectional ladders, steps, etc.). It is important to remember to stay connected to the tree trunk with your climbing belt/srs until you have safely secured your harness tether and tree belt to the tree trunk. Once you have secured your tree belt and adjusted its length, only then can you safely disconnect your climbing belt/srs. WARNING! Under no circumstance should you attempt to install or remove hang-on or lock-on style treestands and/or their climbing aids without the use of your SCOUT climbing belt/srs. Failure to follow these instructions puts the user at risk of serious injury or death! WARNING! Under no circumstance should you attempt to disconnect your climbing belt prior to having the harness tether and tree belt installed as previously described. You must be connected at all times when at heights above ground level. Failure to follow these instructions puts the user at risk of serious injury or death! FIGURE 17 WRAP CLIMBING BELT/SRS AROUND TREE TRUNK AND TIGHTEN TO COMFORTABLE LENGTH SUSPENSION RELIEF SYSTEM (SRS) - A LIFE-SAVER SHOULD YOU EX- PERIENCE A FALL WARNING! Prior to attempting to use this or any other SCOUT product(s) you must take a moment and become familiar with its assembly, setup and installation. You must practice installing, setting-up and using this product(s) at ground level prior to attempting to use it at heights above ground-level. Once you have become thoroughly knowledgeable and comfortable with this SCOUT product(s) setup, installation and use at groundlevel, you are now ready to use it at heights about ground-level. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury and death! In the unlikely event that you should experience a fall while using your SCOUT full-body harness with it s integrated Suspension Relief System (SRS) - don t panic. Your SCOUT full-body harness is equipped with a lifesaving feature, called the Suspension Relief System. Following a fall, you will find yourself suspended safely and comfortably in your SCOUT full-body harness. It is important to understand that hanging suspended in a full-body harness over time can cut off circulation to your extremities and cause a fatal condition called suspension trauma. 11

17 As such, you should immediately begin a simple operation that will eliminate the negative affects of suspension trauma. Should you experience a fall - remain calm. Follow these simple steps to help maintain circulation the legs and prevent suspension trauma (blood pooling). STEP 1: Remove the SRS belt from the left side of your waist belt (refer to Figure 2). STEP 2: Insert the tag end of the climbing belt/srs into the climbing belt/srs buckle (refer to Figure 2). Thread the buckle as previously outlined in Figures 14A-14E. WARNING! Prior to attempting to use this or any other SCOUT product(s) you must take a moment and become familiar with its assembly, setup and installation. You must practice installing, setting-up and using this product(s) at ground level prior to attempting to use it at heights above ground-level. Once you have become thoroughly knowledgeable and comfortable with this SCOUT product(s), installation and use at ground-level, you are now ready to use it at heights about ground-level. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury and death! STEP 3: With your climbing belt/srs now installed, adjust it to a length that will accommodate your outstretched legs and a length that will allow you to place your body weight on the SRS. Refer to Figure 18. STEP 4: With your climbing belt/srs now installed and adjusted to a length that will accommodate your outstretched legs, place your feet in the SRS. To minimize the possibility of suspension trauma, place your weight on the SRS strap and exercise your legs by pushing against the SRS strap with your legs. This exercise will eliminate the effects of suspension trauma until help arrives. FIGURE 18 ADJUST SRS TO A COMFORTABLE LENGTH FOR YOUR OUTSTRETCHED LEGS WARNING! Prior to each hunt, make sure that you have a signaling device (e.g., mobile phone, radio, whistle, signal flare, Personal Locator Device [PLD], etc.) in your possession and on your person in an operable condition. This device must be within easy access should you experience the need to contact emergency assistance. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or death!
