5 KOOKABURRA CRICKET 2017/18 HERITAGE 1890 Kookaburra, named after the company founder AG Thompson s pet Kookaburra Jacky, a member of the Australian Kingfisher family, is an Australian sports equipment company specialising in cricket and field hockey equipment (including balls). The company notably manufactures the most widely used brand of ball used in Test Cricket, limited over cricket, and international hockey tournaments. Kookaburra Sport, a 100% Australian family owned and operated global business was established in 1890, trading under the brand name Kookaburra in both cricket and hockey internationally, with offices in Australia (Head Office), India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Kookaburra predominantly sells its products via existing retailers, as well as cricket and hockey balls to Leagues and Associations in over 50 countries worldwide. For 100 years, Kookaburra Sport traded as AG Thompson Pty Ltd and a number of the Thompson family members are still actively involved in the daily running of the business. Kookaburra Sport employs over 150 employees worldwide as the business continues to grow successfully. The Kookaburra name is synonymous with Australian sport and has established itself as the No. 1 Australian sports brand worldwide. Its association with sport originates from cricket, and by World War 1 the brand was entrenched as one of the leading Australian hand-made cricket ball manufacturers. Today Kookaburra is the official red ball supplier to the main test-playing nations other than India and England, and produces over 500,000 cricket balls per year. 6 ENGLISH WILLOW SALIX CAERULEA (AKA ENGLISH WILLOW) In all our years experience of bat making, it is understood that cosmetic appearance has little correlation with bat performance. Historically it was felt that thin grain bats were the best performing, but with a tendency to break through being more fragile. Whereby the reality is that wider grained bats can perform equally as well, and although slightly harder to begin with, subjected to the correct preparation they were stronger pieces of willow. The number of grains in a bat is a much debated issue, typically the school of thought is that 8 straight grains on the face produces the perfect bat. However over the years due to ever increasing demand, willow has evolved to reach maturity more quickly, This means there are generally fewer/wider grains, and consequently the process of grading bats against the number of grains is a somewhat questionable approach. During the production process our master bat makers extensively evaluate (by hand!) each individual cleft of willow, in order to determine which model it is able to produce. Conducting this process with such attention to detail enables Kookaburra to produce the highest quality of bat, within each grade of willow. Another prominent factor when evaluating a willow cleft, is the proportion of white wood versus red wood. The unwritten rule is that white wood represents the more responsive part of the cleft with enhanced performance, whereas red wood is slightly less responsive but benefits from enhanced durability. In reality, a mixture of both white and red wood is seen to be beneficial. In conclusion, the most important factor when choosing your Kookaburra is to ensure that it feels right for you. In order to maximise your performance it is essential to consider what you want from the bat, and how it fits into your game. A bat with predominantly white wood but also some red wood running down one edge.

7 KOOKABURRA CRICKET 2017/18 WEIGHT & PICKUP WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? The holy grail of bats is one with a massive profile and a very light dead weight but this is exceptionally hard to find. There is much discussion about heavier bats and massive edge profiles and how these will hit the ball further but we do not totally subscribe to that theory. Clearly, if you choose a lighter bat then you will most likely have to compromise slightly on the thickness of the profile and edge profile but this is not a problem. We all have different physiques and sizes and we strongly believe that to get the best performance out of a bat the most essential element is to choose one that feels the right weight for you, this will help you to time the ball better and ultimately make more runs. It is interesting when a player stipulates that they must have an exact bat weight - if a 2lb 9oz and a 2lb 10oz bat weight were placed in front of the player, it is unlikely that they would be able to tell the difference. We feel pick up is more important than dead weight as the pick up determines how the bat will feel in play nobody can tell you what the right pick up is for you, or the exact weight you should use it is a question of what feels right for you. WILLOW GRADING GRADE 1 The most expensive willow and arguably the best looking blade. There may be some red wood evident on the blade and generally there will be at least 6 fairly straight grains visible on the face. There may be a small knot or speck in the edge or back of the bat but the playing should be clean. GRADE 2 Excellent quality blade but usually more red wood may be visible than on a grade 1 which does not affect the playability of the bat. Similar number of grains to a grade 1 with potentially the odd blemish or butterfly in the grain on the face. SHAPE & WHICH FOR ME? It is often claimed that bats are specifically designed for either front or back foot play. In reality, although a shape can be better suited to the type of wicket you normally play on, we all have to play off both the front and back foot, so it is therefore best to choose the bat that just feels right for you. All players differ slightly in the way they play and as such are likely to hit the ball in slightly different areas of the bat. Whilst it is impossible to cater for every impact area if you choose a bat whereby the wood is focused on your normal impact position, then this gives a better chance of finding the bat that will be right for you. GRADE 3 The most extensively used grade of blade which offers excellent value for money. A grade 3 blade may have up to half the face in a tint/red wood colour but this does not affect playability. This grade will have around 5 grains on the face that may not be that straight and there is likely to be some specks or butterfly marks on the grains on the bat face. GRADE 4 Usually over half of the blade may have a discoloured area but the product playability should not be affected. There are often only 4 grains and there are more butterfly stains and marks on the face of the bat. GRADE 5 This grade is produced during our production process and it is basically similar to a grade 4 but may have more stain in the wood so cosmetically will not look as good. 8 TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING BATS - THE INSIDE STORY Cricket is a technical sport with technical products, but what do all the terms mean? The following is an insight into the mysteries of cricket bats and will hopefully assist when selecting your Kookaburra. EDGE Massive Big Edge profile which increases from the shoulders and maximises at the sweet spot, generating supreme balance with an extended sweet spot that covers the entire width of the blade. SPINE Kookaburra s Super Spine profiles adopt traditional shaping characteristics, which operate in unison with the Big Edge profile of the bat. This creates a huge apex, with unrivalled amounts of power throughout the length of the blade and superb pick up. SWEET SPOT The position in the blade where performance is maximised. Kookaburra bats are engineered to maximise the size of the sweet spot, allowing the middle of the bat to be spread further across the blade meaning that off centre strikes perform better. SCALLOP In the quest to maximise profile, using scallops either side of the spine allow the apex to be extended without dramatically increasing weight. Scallops also maximise edge profile which reduces rotation of the blade in off centre hits, in turn minimising power loss. FACE The modern game revolves around the thickness of the blade: Flat Face - Levelling out the striking area allows more mass to be retained in the back of the bat, maximising the power profile. Rounded Face Favoured by more traditional players, the slightly rounded face gives a familiar look but yields a lesser profile. BOW The curve of the bat from the tip of the handle to the end of the toe. Designed to enhance the position of the hands by placing them ahead of the ball, which is essential for good stroke play. 9 KOOKABURRA CRICKET 2017/18 ICON GLOSSARY HAND CRAFTED Each cleft is different, and although replication by machine would seem a sensible direction, it does not allow individual assessment and unique work on every cleft to maximise it s performance. Over 50 different processes go into the production of each Kookaburra bat. ROUNDED FACE Kookaburra s Rounded Face Profile is generally favoured by the more traditional player. The rounded face provides a refined direction of power throughout the hitting zone, but yields a slightly less imposing yet more familiar profile. BIG SWEET SPOT Engineered to maximise the size of the sweet spot, by optimising the edge, spine and scallop profiles - Kookaburra bats are produced with the maximum sized sweet spot available, building confidence and emphasising strokeplay. FLAT FACE Kookaburra s Flat Face Profile levels out the striking area allowing more mass to be retained in the back and edges of the bat. By maximising the amount of willow behind the striking area, the bat gains a larger profile and produces more power. POWER DRIVE Kookaburra handles utilise multiple pieces of specially selected cane to enhance strength. This reinforces the bond between handle & blade thereby maximising durability and power transfer. ANGLED TOE All Kookaburra bats have a slightly angled toe this allows the bat to sit comfortably in the stance and promote the preferred hand position of being slightly ahead of the blade. PRE PREPARED This process is done by hand, NOT machine, and greatly reduces the time needed to prepare your bat for match play. It is not a full knocking in service and more preparation work by yourself is advised after purchase. SUPER SPINE Players want bats to look as big as possible; hence they want the spine to be as high as it can be. The Kookaburra Super Spine measures up to 68mm (depending on the weight and profile of the bat), generating maximum power through every single ball. BIG EDGES Increasing the edge profile minimises the power loss caused from off centre strikes. Kookaburra bat edges measure up to 40mm (depending on the weight and profile of the bat) so you can be sure you ll lose little, when it doesn t come out of the middle. LIGHT WEIGHT Despite the quest for maximum profile, certain players still want lightweight bats.
