3 Editorial Pre season has started and the cobwebs are coming off the cricket kit. Its a great time of year. If you are still going through trials some tips are to do some physical exercise, pick up a bat and have a few hits and roll your arm over a few times. The selectors will pick up straight away those that have done nothing leading up to the trials, so don t be one of those. Do what you do best and you will have your best chance to succeed. Selectors only see you for a short time so make the most of your opportunity and most importantly enjoy every minute. 4 Train the Brain Talent makes you good talent with mental fortitude makes you great. In cricket you need to block out all distractions, calm the nerves and have the stamina and focus to score big or bowl long spells. Being physically fit certain plays its part but in order to perform at the top level you need to have it between the ears. There are many versions of this saying but sport is 90% mental and 10% physical. At the top flite all players are talented they all put in the effort and the training but those that succeed and shine are those whose mental side of the game is at the highest level. Here are some ideas to help train the brain. Importance of a Massage If nothing more than to relax, a massage for an elite athlete does a bit more than take the edge off a bad day. Sports massage is a field that was not around 20 years ago but is an integral part of elite sport today. Here are some of the benefits : Visualisation - imagine the outcome. See yourself bowling the next ball or the shot to bring up your hundred. It has to be real though. Watch a Formula 1 Driver before they start Qualifying or the Race. They sit in the car, eyes closed and they mentally go through the entire track in their minds. This can improve your confidence going forward. Relaxation - everyone has different ways to bring the anxiety level down, whether it is listening to music, releasing some tension through physical activity or talking to your team mates, do whatever you need to do to get your heart rate down and keep your nerves in check. Positive - change your mindset from I hope I survive to where can I get my first run. From I hope I dont get spanked to how do I capitalise on his weakness. Going in with a defeated attitude will certainly put you on the back foot. Set Achievable Goals - if your goals are realistic and achievable you are more likely to do your utmost to achieve them. Make your goal astronomical, chances are you won t even try. Small chuncks of the big picture and piece them all together. Ride your luck - there are times when everything goes your way, go with the flow and make the most of it. Cricket is swings and roundabouts so when it goes pear shaped remember the times lady luck smiled on you. 1. It reduces the risk of injury. 2. It releases muscle tension. 3. It increases blood and oxygen flow to the muscles. 4. It reduces aches and pains through muscle fatigue. 5. It stretches the muscle fibres 6. It relaxes the body and mind as well as in some cases pain and irritation. 7. It Improves tissue elasticity. The key for elite athletes is to keep themselves on the park. With the increased number of games in a season and the demand made at higher levels a massage may help you to play the entire season. It s Okay To Be a Beginner I ll never forget the time during one of my first yoga classes when I was 4 EVERYTHING CRICKET AUGUST 2014 ISSUE 13

5 Start from the Beginning Have you ever been in the nets and got distracted by the swashbuckling stroke play of the batsman in the next net, to the extent that you lose focus in your own net and copped one for your troubles? I guess the moral of that story is to stay focused on your own game. There will always be players out there with better actions, better footwork and balance, timing and stroke play and that is inevitable but for you to be successful doesn t rely on what someone else does or how successful someone else is. Success is one of those commodities that isn t allocated to a few, it is always there for everyone. No matter how good you are there are always things you want to change or improve, things that you don t do very well at present. Take for example flicking the ball off your pads. You enviously watch from mid off as the opposition batsman middles every ball off their pads and capitalises on those scoring opportunities. Come your turn to bat you get increasingly frustrated as you flay away missing or getting wrapped on the pad and eventually getting a top edge back to the bowler. You want to so badly nail it and feel like you are not quite at the top level because you havent mastered that shot. Believe me you are not the first nor the last player to feel this way. We all have to start somewhere and no matter how long you have been playing, mastering a new ball or shot, makes you feel like a beginner again. No one just gets it. Even those that make it look easy had to start somewhere. I guess it all starts with change. Change is scary at times and can set you back before moving forward. Take small steps and never compare yourself with anyone else. Everyone progresses at different rates and the trick is to perservere. It will get frustrating but hang in there. Knowing where you are in terms of your progress is imperative but be realistic at the same time. STOP We all set goals to achieve something but how many of us set goals to stop doing something? Do you do anything that is stopping you from achieving a goal? Perhaps your dietry habits compromises your fitness or a bad habit is stopping you from playing strongly on the leg side or perhaps fear is taking away your focus... So what are you going to do about it? We spend a lot of time setting goals for ourselves but sometimes the secret to successfully achieving those goals is to stop doing certain things. For example if you are not eating the right food or too much of the wrong foods, stop doing it and get into the right habits. If you keep stepping inside the line therefore unable to make meaningful contact with balls on your pads, stop doing it. If fear is taking away your focus realise that fear is optional and stop being afraid. Sometimes stopping something enables you to move forwards. Progress is easily quantified if you know where you are right now. This applies to most aspects of life. For example if I wanted to do 100 pushups and I know that I can only do 15 then I must do the 15 because that is what I am physically capable of right now. By continuously doing 15 I will build up the strength to do 20 and so on. If I try to do 100 straight away all I will achieve is to be despondent and give up (not to mention ending up in hospital). Don t wait until next week to do your 15 because the sooner you take the first step and make the commitment to your bigger goal the sooner you will get there. So instead of marvelling at the pace of that bowler or the stroke play of that batsman and feeling inadequate, start working towards consistent improvement in that area of your game and just like everything else in life, once you attain that level of competency being a begginer will seem but a distant memory. Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm Winston Churchill EVERYTHING CRICKET AUGUST 2014 ISSUE 13 5

7 Being Competitive is Good Today everyone is a winner... but we all know that this is not true. What does it take to be competitive. Some people are very competitive by nature, others have that sibling rivalry to help them, some just plain hate losing but wanting to win is not a crime. Confidence vs Arrogance - They say that some of the top athletes are arrogant and this is true but at times some poeple see confidence as arrogance. Whats the difference? Its a fine line. In my view arrogance is someone who is full of themselves whilst confidence is someone who is comfortable in themselves and their abilities. Confidence is great for the Team, arrogance is not. Looking forward to the challenge - Whenever you embrace a challenge you know you will perform at your best to conquer it. Being competitive is pushing the limits in whatever you do. Love the contest. Be relentless - when you get an opportunity to finish off a game do it. Put the final nail in the coffin as the saying goes. Being competitive means not letting up, if you get your tail up keep that momentum and dont give the opposition a sniff because at times that sniff is enough to let the opposition back into the game. Learn to win - Developing a winning culture within a team is extremely important. The taste of victory is awesome. Defeat only makes you realise how good victory is. Always win with respect. Respect for your team mates and the opposition. Humility is the sign of a great team. Whenever you take to the field you have to want to win. Winning at all costs is not something I subscribe too but there is nothing wrong with playing hard and fair to achieve victory. It is even sweeter when shared with team mates. Not everone can be a winner, so you get to choose. and the WINNERS are Calendar Date 5th August 6th August 10th August 12th August 13th August 19th August 20th August Event Session 1 - Introduction to Umpiring - WACA Winter Umpiring Course 1 - WACA Club Registration - check with your local club for specific dates and times. 14 Speed Drills Speed and Fitness are 2 aspects that are sometimes neglected during the season but now that Pre Season has commenced use this drill to get players ready for the season. You can make it competitive by making 3 or 4 groups of 3 or 4 players and make then do it 6 times each. Winning team gets to sit out whilst the others go again and so on. 15 Wickets Win Matches In todays cricketing era of T20, a spinners role is predominently to slow the run rate. What happened to taking wickets? I have always believed that spin bowling is an art form, one that takes a lot longer to master than that of the pace bowlers, but we must not let this art fade away and be lost forever. The trajectory of the ball just above the eyeline to keep the batsman guessing where it will land takes time to master but once it becomes second nature, there is never a better contest. Do you as a bowler consider yourself good if you are not taking wickets? You may not be going over the fence for boundaries too often but you are not in control, the batsman is. Sometimes you need to tweak your action and getting the advice of a good spin coach will give you that little bit you need to pick up the wickets you deserve / 15 Female Scholarship Recipients Now in its second year here are the recipients of the Female Scholarships This year the WACA has awarded Danira Papertalk, Phoebe Vlahov, Piepa Cleary and Shenae Reichelt $5, each which is aimed to assist young players under the age of 21 with cricket related costs. Last years inaugural winners were Heather Graham, Samara Williams and Taneale Peschel. It may be something as simple as flighting the ball more or a different angle of your arm at release, whatever it is, for you to wrestle back control from the batsman you need to get him guessing and hoping that he is playing the right shot. That is when you are likely to pick up wickets. Every bowler needs a plan to work to, even a bad plan is better than no plan but when things are not going your way there is no need to try and experiment with 5 different variations, stick to what you do best. Flight and dip is achieved by imparting lots of revs on the ball, bowled with energy and over a braced front leg. To add to this changing the pace is imperative because if you don t the batsman will soon get into a rhythm facing you. A spin bowler is a master at the art of deception. Only by deceiving the batsman will a spin bowler truly achieve their true potential. 16 The Optimist s Creed Promise Yourself To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only the best, to work only for the best, nand to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press-on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words but great deeds. Benefits of Exercise Regular exercise has many benefits here are a few that will hopefully get you out doing some physical activity on a regular basis. 1. For those who are getting on in age it supposedly increases blood to the brain which helps to improve you memory (Not sure that this is proven, not for me anyway). 2. Weight Control, it may not seem important now but keeping you weight in check now, becomes a habit. Those who have let themselves go will find it harder to peg it back. 3. Exercise helps to release serotonin which helps to relax the mind and improves your moods. 4. Exercise helps to reduce choleserol and helps to keep your blood pressure at an acceptable level. 5. Exercising regulary boosts your energy levels. Lots of benefits and the odd strain or pulled hammy shouldn t deter you.
