1 Census Horsell This is a transcript made from the copy of the Census in Surrey History Centre with additional help from the Index of Families contained in the 3 rd Edition of the Woking Collection published by West Surrey Family History Society. The original entries are reproduced except where it has been preferable to abbreviate this to enable the entry to fit snugly in the Excel table format eg NE for North East. Also where entries have been left blank for obviously unmarried persons eg children, u has been inserted as a tidying up procedure. In a few instances the text has proved unreadable and the words have been omitted and replaced by dots. or a question mark inserted. The transcript has been compared with Edward Ryde s 1851 survey of Horsell and the plot numbers of that survey and other relevant information marked in red. This additional information is, of course, assumed rather than proven. The comparison is difficult because whereas the census includes all persons living in the parish on the night of 30 th March 1851 the survey only lists the Owners and Occupiers of premises where there is presumably a presumably a contract between those parties. Thus any tenants or other persons who are legally living there would be omitted. There are 17 families which appear in the census but are absent from the survey. A list of these appears at the end of this paper. Advances in agricultural practice made it possible for a farmer to purchase other adjacent farms and work these from his existing farmhouse. As a result many farmhouses became redundant and were used to house farm workers. Of the 17 families, 11 of these involved agricultural or nursery labourers and three were widows, annuitants and a charwoman. These would comfortably have been accommodated in redundant farmhouses. The absence of Henry Taylor, Isaac Steer and George Clarke from the survey, however, is puzzling. The enumeration appears to have been carried out by two separate persons to judge from the hand writing. The return uses separate numbers for each part and this system has been followed in the transcription. The return can be read usefully in conjunction with the 1845 Tithe Map apportionment. Phillip Arnold, December 2011.
