What Goes on at the Club Ours is a Bowls club with a vibrant and varied programme of social activities. From late April to late September the Green and Clubhouse are generally open to members every day from late morning. Bowling can take place until dark. There are informal roll-up sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 2 and 4 (including a Tea Break!), and a Club Evening every Friday night. Social events play an important role in the life of the Club and are run throughout the year. They give members the opportunity to relax, have fun and get to know each other and also offer occasions when spouses, partners and friends can be welcomed to the club. They also are important revenue earners for the club. Social Events during the Season Each season there is: An Opening Season Roll-up and Supper Gemini Day: a Fun Bowls event sponsored by Gemini Printers Captains /Vice-Captains Day President s Day (which closes the season) The annual Presentation Evening/Dinner Dance followed by Annual General Meeting in late November. Duties of Full Members In order to keep our membership fees as low as possible we don t employ any paid staff (except for a Green Keeper who provides advice and specialist work such as aeration, scarification and fertiliser application). This means that we rely completely on all full members to do all the jobs needed to keep the club, the clubhouse and the green working properly. All Full Members are required to do one cleaning duty a year (unless medically unfit) and either a bar or tea duty. The rotas for these duties are published on the notice board at the beginning of each season, but there are many other jobs that have to be done; these include: Mowing the green two or three times a week (also weekends early in the season) Making meals for match days Running the bar Making Teas Maintaining the gardens and flower displays Page 5

The current Committee members are pictured on our website. In addition there are a number of non-committee positions to assist with the running of the club. 9 The Clubhouse Car Parking The Club has 4 parking spaces inside the gates and 7 spaces outside the club gates (These are not part of the public Canal Fields car park). Disability Access/Facilities The club is fully accessible, with level access and an accessible toilet. We also have equipment to assist players with disabilities. Defibrillator A defibrillator for general use is mounted on a post in Canal Fields near to the entrance to the club driveway. Instructions for use are clearly displayed on the defibrillator. Security Entry is controlled by a key entry and an Alarm system. Members can request a key to the clubhouse from the Club Treasurer (a small refundable deposit is required). Each key-holder will be given the code to de-activate the alarm, this must be punched into the keypad next to the door within approximately 30 seconds. If you make a mistake, press the X button to cancel. If you are last to leave the Clubhouse you must re-set the alarm before locking the door. To do this, enter the code followed by button A at the top left of the keypad. The door needs then to be locked within approximately 30 seconds. The alarm system is monitored remotely. If the alarm is activated, or the smoke alarm in the kitchen sounds, the monitoring company will call the clubhouse. Please answer the phone. You will be asked for the recognition password to identify that you are a member of the club - this was given to you with the clubhouse key. You will also be asked to report on the current situation. Page 7

The monitoring company will tell you what to do. Bar The bar is opened at the discretion of the Duty Bar Manager or other key holders so that the bar is open as often as possible. Drinks can be enjoyed in the clubhouse or on the terrace but not on the green. Visitors are welcome to use the bar if sponsored by a member. The bar is staffed during roll-ups and club events. At other times it is an Honesty Bar, and members are trusted to put money in the till. Kitchen We have a 5-star Hygiene rating, and are inspected regularly, so it is important that members follow the hygiene instructions displayed in the kitchen. Particular care needs to be taken on the ingredients concerning allergy considerations, although the onus is placed on the consumer to check that the food being served is acceptable to them. Utensils and crockery should be washed after use and stored in their places. Food must be correctly stored in the fridge or freezer, wrapped with a clearly displayed use by date. Any food past its use by date will be removed. Any such food in the fridge/freezers discovered during a random health inspection could result in the club losing its 5-star status!!!! Members may borrow kitchen equipment for use outside the club; this must be recorded in the kitchen equipment loan book. Any damage/ breakages must be paid for, Changing Rooms Members may leave personal equipment at the club, but the club does not accept any responsibility for these. All personal equipment must be clearly labelled with the owner s name. Page 8

Bookcase The bookcase is at the far end of the club house. Books can be bought for small cost, please put the money in the pink box on the bookcase. Notice boards Notice Boards are the responsibility of the Secretary and the Club Captains; items for display on the boards must, in the first instance, be cleared with the Secretary. We want to keep the boards neat & tidy; please help us meet this aim The notice boards in the changing rooms mainly relate to external competitions. The long notice board in the clubhouse is for other competitions and general matters. The small notice board near the bar is for members use and for Committee notices. The whiteboard by the alarm is for information on events in the current week. Pigeon Holes These are used for communication with individual members. Please check regularly. Folders There are 2 folders in the top cupboards near to the telephone: Action Folder (Blue): external gala invitations; application forms; clubhouse booking forms etc. If you don't see what you are looking for on the boards, look in this folder. Information Folder (Red): Club Constitution, Newsletters, Bowls England communications, etc. Smoking Smoking is not permitted in the clubhouse, outbuildings or on the green. Anyone smoking elsewhere within the club grounds is asked to dispose of cigarette ends etc in the receptacles provided. Page 9

The Bowling Green The green is usually marked out as six rinks. The Green Manager allocates the rinks to be used. The direction of play is usually rotated on a weekly basis. There is a hierarchy of allocation of rinks. The precedence is: National, County, District, friendly matches, internal competitions and, roll-ups. Whenever possible, up to three rinks will be reserved for casual play/practice (roll ups). As per the notice near the Club gate Dacorum D.C. require us to have a rink available for public use, but only if a member of the club is present. A fee of 5.00 per person is chargeable, which includes use of our equipment; however this is seldom used other than by visitors/friends of members or ex-members. Equipment The full range of bowls equipment is available for members to use. Please return it to its original place afterwards. Large pieces of equipment and jacks are kept in the outside shed. Members are given the code to the padlock. Scorecards and pens are in the right hand drawers of clubhouse sideboard. Bowls are kept in the cupboard next to the bar Bowler s Arms (for those with difficulty in stooping to bowl) are stored in the Clubhouse An Umpires Case with tape measures etc. (in the cupboard by the end of the bar) Page 10

Protection nets for use when the green is wet; these are hung on the outside of the wall at the far end of the clubhouse. Any club equipment to be used outside the club grounds should be signed for in the loan book. Playing Bowls at the Club We want all members to enjoy bowls in whatever format or competitive level they prefer. If you don t feel that this is being achieved, please talk to one of the captains. Roll-up sessions These take place every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the season between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., including a tea break. You don t need to wear any particular clothing except bowling shoes (which you can borrow from the club). You can also borrow a set of woods. [New members are advised not to rush out and buy their own woods, but to try several types and sizes to see which suits them.] Each rink, generally either a triple or a four, is chosen at random from the players on each day. Club nights These are on Fridays throughout the Season from 6.15 p.m. They provide a mixture of bowling and social events and take place whatever the weather. On nice evenings some members get together for a roll-up, before retiring to the bar. In addition to these organised sessions, members can book a rink at any time (including during Roll-ups and Friday nights). Rink reservations should be noted in the Rink Booking Book, which is kept in the Clubhouse, recording the competition/match to be played, the start time of that game, the length of time Page 11

required and the name of the person making the booking. This action reserves the rink for that time and date. Competitions There are three types of competition for members: External Friendly matches against teams from other local clubs Internal Club Competitions External Competitive matches against teams or individuals from other clubs The Club encourages all members, including new members, to take part in as many competitions as possible, particularly internal competitions and Friendly Matches. For all competitive matches, both internal and external, you will need to wear a club top, and either white (at weekends) or grey (midweek) trousers, shorts or skirt. New members can wear a white top until their club top arrives. There is also the option of borrowing a club shirt from another Club member or asking if the Club holds any seconds External Friendly Matches Friendly Matches are not part of any League or Cup competition, and although we keep to the rules, there may be times when we are more relaxed about them. These fixtures are a good place to start playing competition matches. If you are a new player, don t be put off because you think your lack of skill will spoil the game it won t! Less experienced players are supported by more experienced team mates, and play in less exposed positions. Selection for Matches Lists are put on the club house notice board a few weeks before the fixture for members to write their name if they would like to play. Enter as many as you like! The Captains will select balanced teams of experienced and inexperienced members to give Page 12

everyone experience of match play. (Of course you may not be selected to play in all of the matches you have signed up for.) Teams are selected about ten days before the fixture. You need to check if you have been selected, and tick your name off to confirm that you will be available to play. If you are picked, and then have to pull out, you must tell the Captain for the Day. For Home Matches check the list to see if you have to help set up the rink before the match, or are for bar or tea duty. All Friendly Matches are listed in the Fixture Card and on our website as in this example: Date Day Time Fixture Rinks Venue Dress 27 Sun 2.30 Potten End 6MXD Away W And this is what it means: Date, Day and Time:- Obvious! Fixture: This is the club the match is against, but it may of course be a Home Match. Check the Venue (Home or Away). Rinks: This tells you what type of fixture it is. The above example is 6MXD. The number (6 here) tells you how many rinks there will be. MXD means mixed Fours { MXT means mixed Triples} Dress: W = White (Trousers, shorts or skirts) and club tops G = Grey (Trousers, shorts or skirts) and club tops Page 13

Summary of Rules for Internal Competitions This summary is for guidance only. In case of dispute you must refer to the full copy of the Rules. You can find these on our website (under Events and Competitions ) or in the Information Folder in the Clubhouse. If you wish you can get your own copy from the Competition Secretary. a. Entering Competitions Entry forms are sent out by or mail at the beginning of the season, and are also available in the clubhouse. For all competitions there is an entry fee, which must be paid to the Competitions Secretary by the closing date. For all pairs competitions, other than the Pedlow competition, club members choose their playing partner and enter as a pair. For the Pedlow competition, members enter as individuals, and pairs are selected by the Competition Sub-committee taking account of individuals playing handicaps. Losers in both the men s and ladies singles first round matches can enter the Highland Trophy. The selection for the teams in the Triples and Fours competitions is made by the Competitions Sub-committee. b. Handicaps Some competitions are organised on a Handicap basis. All playing members are given a handicap currently ranging from 0 to 10. Each season these handicaps are determined by the Competitions Sub-committee, and displayed in the clubhouse. During competitions the handicap counts as a minus score for the highest-ranked player. c. Arranging Matches i. Singles, Pairs and Pedlow Competitions. The draw is shown on the notice board. The Team (or player) listed first (shown in blue) is The Challenger. The Challenger must offer the opponent (shown in red) three dates for the round to be played The Challenge. Page 15

They must do this no more than 3 days after the end of the previous round, or (for first round matches) within 4 days of the start of the competition. The opponent must respond and accept one of the dates offered within 3 days or forfeit the round. If a challenge is not made within the time limit, the opponent now becomes the challenger and has the right to offer three dates to their opponent. Under no circumstances will a player or team be allowed to play any round after the closing date of the round unless the green has been declared to be unfit for play. In that event the game must be played within 48 hours. If mutual agreement cannot be reached on a new time and date, the result will be determined by a toss of a coin with the challenger calling to determine the match result. Should a first round tie not be played by the closing date of the round, (notwithstanding an unfit green as above) then both players/teams will be eliminated from the competition Once a match is agreed, the challenger must reserve a rink in the Rink Book, and (for singles matches only) find a Marker for the match. All singles matches must have a Marker. Each singles player, or skip of a team, must put a completed scorecard, signed by their opponent, in the Scorecards pigeonhole in the Clubhouse. The winner should also enter their name onto the draw sheets on the Notice Board. ii. Triples and Fours Matches All rounds of the Club Triples and Fours are pre-booked (date, time, rink) by the Competition Secretary prior to the start of the season, and appear in the Club Fixture Card. However, if mutually agreeable to all involved, teams may arrange earlier dates than those pre-booked. For the Triples and Fours you can indicate on your entry form that you want to be put onto the Substitute List. Page 16

Substitutes are put into Skills Groups according to their handicap. These lists will be published on the notice board; additional names may be added up until the closing date shown. If someone cannot play a match a substitute with the same handicap should be chosen from the appropriate Skills Group. Substitutes should be chosen in the order they appear on the list. If a player with the correct handicap cannot be found, the team s handicap will be adjusted accordingly. In any one round no team may have more than one substitute You cannot be a substitute in a competition you have entered as part of a Team. You can only be a substitute for one team in the same competition. If a substitute plays in two consecutive rounds they replace the original team member permanently. All substitutions must be notified to, and confirmed by, the Competitions Secretary before playing in a team d. Dress Code Club tops and grey trousers or skirt (white for Finals) must be worn. Markers must wear white tops and greys (whites for the finals). e. Forfeited Matches For all matches if a player or team arrives more than half an hour after the start time fixed for the match, then the other player or team may claim a walkover. Page 17

External Competitions - District, County and National These are of two types: 1) Competitions where the Club enters a team, and 2) Competitions that individuals enter themselves. 22 Berkhamsted Bowls Club History The Club was founded in 1985, and has always operated as a mixed club, with both men s and ladies sections run by a single management committee. We believe that we were the first wholly mixed club in Hertfordshire. The Green at Canal Fields, Berkhamsted was built in 1984 by Dacorum Borough Council and the following year Club members paid to have their own clubhouse built. The Clubhouse has since been extended to provide full disabled facilities and larger changing rooms. The green was maintained by the Council until 2003 when the members took over the daily work contracting in professional help to oversee the work. Our Club has built a reputation throughout Herts for hospitality, providing bowlers and visitors with superb refreshments. Gala days, charity events and social functions are run all year. Thousands of pounds have been raised for charities: particularly the local Hospice of St. Francis. On the green the Club has enjoyed regular success at County & District. The Club currently has one of the largest memberships in the County. Our large under 19 section, started in 2012, is an achievement of which the Club is hugely proud. In the near future we hope to raise the Club profile further through more links with the town s sports clubs, youth clubs, schools, commerce and residents encouraging the playing and social benefits of the game. The progress we have made through the years is recognised by: Bowls England National Club of the Year Winners, 2015 Bowls England National Club of the Year Runners up, 2012 and 2013 Top Club in Dacorum Sports Award 2014/15 Page 20

Dacorum Sports Award Contribution to Disability Sports in 2014 and 2015 Marcia Dunstone, a club member, was National President of Bowls England 2015 Tom Webb, a club member, was President of the Watford and District Bowls Association in 1992 The Game of Bowls and Bowling Etiquette Bowls is a relatively simple game. The action required to deliver a bowl is not difficult to learn A day to learn, but a lifetime to master! Coaching and tuition is available from the qualified coaches within the Club. Object of the game The object of play is to get your bowl as near as possible to the jack (small target ball). After all the bowls have been played an end is completed. Scoring After the completion of an end, the number of your team s bowls which have finished closest to the jack count. Thus, if you have three bowls closer than your opponent your score for that end is 3 shots. Delivery Action Bowlers delivery techniques are as unique as their fingerprints, but the delivery action should: Be comfortable; so that it can be repeated for long periods of play and does not produce unnecessary strain. Be effective. Conform to the Laws of the Game, i.e before delivery a player must be standing on the mat with all or part of a foot on the mat. At the moment they deliver the jack or bowl, the player must have all or part of one foot on or above the mat. Page 21

You should try to deliver the bowl at or near ground level. Bouncing bowls damage the rink. Bowlers Arm Equipment is available for people who have difficulty in bending. Nets should be used whenever the rink appears to be getting damaged. Bias Some people believe, wrongly, that one side of the bowl is weighted, but it is the shape of the bowl which makes it turn. The curved path taken by the bowl is always toward the side of the smaller disc, and this only happens when the bowl begins to slow down. The point at which the bowl begins to turn is known as the shoulder and this will vary according to the distance the jack is from the mat. A simple guide is that the shoulder is roughly two-thirds of the distance the bowl needs to run to arrive at the target. Choice of Bowl The first decision is likely to be choosing the correct size bowl. There are 9 different sizes of bowl, from 116mm to 131mm in diameter, and varying in weight to a maximum of 1.69kgs each. Some types of bowl turn more than others, but each bowl in the set of four is identical. Types of Bowls Game Singles Two players bowl four bowls alternately. First player to score 21 shots wins. Pairs Two players constitute a team. The leads each play four bowls alternately, followed by the skips. The skip is also in charge of tactics. The winner is the team with the most shots after 21 ends. Page 22

Pedlow Pairs(also known as Australian Pairs) Two Players (A and B) per Team. There is no Skip. Each Player A plays two bowls with Players B up at the head. Players swap ends and Players B, each, play 4 bowls. Players swap ends again and Players A play their final 2 bowls. In the next end Player B will start by playing 2 bowls - and so on. Triples Three players: Lead, second and Skip. Each plays three bowls alternately. The winner is the team with the most shots after 18 ends. Fours (Sometimes called Rinks ) A team of four players: Lead, second, third and skip who bowl two bowls alternatively. The winner is the team with the most shots after 21 ends. Roles of Players Each player has certain duties to perform during the game: Lead Lay the mat Delivers the Jack Delivers mainly draw shots to lay good foundation for the development of the head. If the end is lost, is responsible for gathering up all the bowls and moving them behind the mat. Second Records the progress of the game on the rink scoreboard and in the scorecard, if that has been delegated by the Skip Third Page 23

Acts as the measurer to determine the number of shots scored each end. Directs the skip in choice of shot to play Skip Tosses the coin with his opponent for the right of possession of the mat at the start of the game, and introduces the players Directs the development of the head Records of the score on the scorecard (unless he/she has delegated this) Needs to have a good knowledge the game. Should be a good tactician and team leader Game Etiquette Bowls is one of the few sports where courtesy and etiquette remain and we should be proud of this. Observe the dress code for the game. If shorts are worn they should be tailored and worn with white socks. Shake hands with your opponents at the start of the game. Stand still and quiet at least one metre behind the mat when an opponent is about to bowl. Do not wander between rinks. Do not disturb / remove any bowl from the head until the score has been agreed by both sides. If you leave the green do not wander behind the head on other rinks if someone is on the mat ready to bowl. At the end of the game shake hands with your opponents, (and with the marker where one is involved) It is customary for the home players to offer to buy their opponents (and where a marker is involved the marker) a drink. Where an after match meal is provided, sit with your opponents at the table designated by your rink number. Page 24
