1 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES Volume 2, No 3, 2012 Copyright 2010 All rights reserved Integrated Publishing Association Case study ISSN Bibliography of Indian Trichoptera Department of Zoology & Environmental Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala (Punjab), India doi: /ijes ABSTRACT The helpful bibliography of Indian Trichoptera has been given. Keywords: Bibliography, Indian Trichoptera, Amphiesmenoptera, biomonitoring, biological indicators, trophic dynamics. 1. Introduction Insects are extremely successful animals and they affect many aspects of our lives despite their small size. All kinds of natural and modified ecosystems both aquatic and terrestrial support communities of insects that present a bewildering variety of life styles, forms and functions. The recent high profile of biodiversity as a scientific issue is leading to increasing interest in insects because of their astonishingly high species richness. Inspite of all that, some aquatic insect orders remained ignored at the hands of Indian naturalists. The order Trichoptera Kirby,1813 is one such largest aquatic insect order with more than one thousand species on record from the Indian faunistic limits. However, this record is so incomplete that according to Schmid (1968,1984) there are still more than three thousand species awaiting their discovery.this is mainly because of the fact that innumberable suitable niches are still lying unsurveyed and thus unexplored. Now coming to specific features of these insects, the word Trichoptera is derived from the Greek word trichos means hairs, pteron means wing i.e., wings covered with hairs. The insects belonging to this order are commonly known as caddis flies/ case flies/ watermoths or even watermotors, and their larvae as the caddice worms due to their ability to construct and live within the cases which they make. The order Trichoptera is considered to be the sister group of the Lepidoptera, together comprising the superorder Amphiesmenoptera (from the Greek, amphisema, meaning garment or dress and referring to the dense clothing of hairs or scales in these insects). (Kristensen,1991). The order Trichoptera includes over 13,574 extant species that inhabit a diverse array of fresh water habitats Worldwide, excluding Antarctica (Morse, 2011). Caddis fly adults are generally brown / grey, holometabolous, small to medium sized (1.5 to 40 mm), slender and soft-bodied moth like insects, which can be easily recognized by their typical sitting posture i.e. while at rest, wings are on a more oblique vertical plane forming a triangle over the abdomen and the antennae about as long as the forewing. Among the aquatic orders of primary insects (Odonata, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Neuroptera), Trichoptera is the largest and ranks in diversity with aquatic nematoceran Diptera. The chief biological importance of this group lies in the fact that their larvae are an important and beneficial component of the trophic dynamics & energy flow in the lakes, rivers and streams they inhabit (Resh & Rosenberg, 1984). Caddisfly larvae are also considered as the best biological indicators of water pollution, and are widely used in biomonitoring surveys, Received on December 2011 Published on February

2 many of which are now mandated by federal and municipal statutes in developed countries (Dohet 2002, Lenat 1993, Resh1993, Resh and Unzicker 1975) Trichoptera are also important as the sister taxon to one of the megadiverse insect orders, Lepidoptera, the two constituting the superorder Amphiesmenoptera. Trichoptera order is divided into three sub-orders namely Annulipalpia, Spicipalpia & Integripalpia ( Holzenthal et al., 2007) At present approximately 47 families of Trichoptera have been recognized over the globe comprising approximately 608 genera and 13,574 species. However, only 27 families comprising 94 genera and 1046 species are on record from Indian faunistic limits ( Morse, 2011). Being difficult to work at, the area of caddis fly (Trichoptera) systematics remained intentionally ignored at the hands of Indian naturalists. So much so that this insect order was not even compiled in the Fauna of British India, volumes. Whatever scattered contributions are there, those are all by the foreign workers. So, lot is there which is still to be done in this field and any worker intends to dig deep into this insect order then worker should know all work done on this insect order till yet. So, present work will pave a way for those Caddis fly workers. Acknowledgements Authors are highly grateful to Dr. J.C. Morse (USA) for his many fold assistance. The authors are also thankful to the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi for providing financial help to carry out this work. 2. References 1. Albarda, H., (1881), Neuroptera, in J.P.
