Notes for JAMES BLANCHARD: Source: History of Oneonta from Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time, by Dudley M. Campbell, Oneonta, NY- Pub by: G.W. Fairchild & Co Transcribed and contributed by Sandy Goodspeed Among the early settlers on the south side of the Susquehanna was James BLANCHARD, who was a sturdy native of New England. He was the father of twelve children, one of who was missed at roll call and was afterwards found asleep between the rows in the potato field. The father then instructed the mother to carefully count them over every evening. They all became progenitors of a good class of citizens. His first store stood near the Free Baptist church. Note by Warren R. Potter: Notice the account specifies James and Mary had 12 children while other tabulations list 19 children by name and birth date. It was assumed she was already married to Charles. Minnie living in household of George and Sarah Wainwright, listed as Daughter but George and Sarah did not have a daughter by the name of Minnie. Charles Wainwright is also a member of the household and is listed as Married. In all likelihood, the families knew each other prior to Buckingham Twp. Rebecca states they are somehow related. (everyone in that area was either by marriage or blood or both pretty much I don t buy the ashamed of it bit.) The Wainwright crowd are known to be from Sullivan and Delaware Cos, Cochecton/Calicoon, Hancock. These are not only areas common to all these groups, they are easily accessible to one another, then, now. These families pretty much stayed within themselves, their areas it didn t appear she was from a group who had an itchy foot. ************************************************************************** ******* July 2004: Latest update for this is: Helen s mother, Minnie, was living in Burlington Flats in 1900, Hartwick in both towns adjoining the Town of New Lisbon, with Hartwick being a major trading center in the area.
