And He Wept Aloud, so That The Egyptians Heard Him What does the title mean? About the Bible because of the mention of Egypt Someone who s sad because they are weeping The person who is crying is very loud

List of words Connotations Egyptians- pyramids, cats, Cleopatra, the past Baal-Zebub- the devil Family Heraldnewspaper Rainbow trout- fish Inaudible- can t hear it Outcast- doesn t fit in or belong Denotations Egyptians-are the inhabitants and citizens of Egypt sharing a common culture and a dialect of Arabic. Baal-Zebub- literally "Lord of the Flies" (which originally meant "Lord of everything that flies"); later he is referred to as another name for Devil Family Herald- The Family Herald: A Domestic Magazine of Useful Information & Amusement ( ) was a weekly story paper established by James Elishama Smith in Rainbow trout- The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a species of salmonid native to tributaries of the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America Inaudible- not loud enough to be heard Outcast- someone who is rejected by other people

Grammar Rules, Punctuation, Spacing, etc. punctuation is used correctly Sentences are long (maybe even run ons) Some lines indented- writer wants me to notice these lines mounting one another/ on the rough deal table (11-12) their symbolism/ Baal-Zebub (19-20) never seen a year/ when the flies were so thick (28-29) And wanted to beg his forgiveness (33) Stanzas- 6 of them

Poetic devices Allegory- Baal-zebub- god of poor and outcast- has a moral message Alliteration- big as bumblebees (b sounds), to our tin (t sounds), for the first (f sounds) point in poetry (p sounds), lay to left Allusion- the Family Herald, Egyptians, Baal-Zebub- because they are famous references to literature and history Ambiguity- Baal-Zebub- has more than one meaning Animism- the room buzzed a room can t buzz, it s an object Assonance- plain crazy, skim milk, butter saucer, mouth mounting- vowel sounds are together Consonance- bewildered and afraid; butter saucer- because they have similar endings

Poetic Devices Figurative Language- skim milk coloured windows Hyperbole- the windows overflowed with their smashed corpsesbecause it sounds exaggerated Imagery- until bits of their wings stuck to my fingers - you can feel it (uses the senses) Irony- that the grandfather never seemed to notice the flies, but in the end he did Juxtaposition- comparing the grandfather and the grandson, the grandfather didn t notice the flies, but the flies enraged the grandson- Mood- really dark, creepy and twisted- because how things are described Onomatopoeia- buzzed, smashed, stuck Oxymoron- inaudible humming (two opposite words, how can something inaudible hum?)

Poetic Devices Personification- houseflies playing crazy football - people play football, not flies Point of view- first person, speaker uses I Sarcasm- because Baal-Zebub is the Lord of the Flies, talking about how annoying the flies are Simile- The houseflies big as bumblebees (uses as); attack them like a maniac Situational irony- because the poem explains how the grandfather lives, and he seems to be okay with it, until the grandson notices Speaker- they take on the persona of the grandchild; he s angry Stanza- there are six

Poetic Devices Symbol- Baal-Zebub- because it says he s a symbol Synecdoche- bits of their wings - represents the actual flies Tone- angry toward the flies

Paraphrase I m in my grandfather s house. There s a bunch of big flies and they are flying around into the windows. The flies are all over the table and the food. I m disgusted that there are so many flies; it s like Lord of the Flies- the flies represent poverty and being an outcast It made me so angry I grabbed a magazine and I killed the flies like a crazy person and until the flies were panicked My grandfather didn t notice the flies until I reacted and then he was confused and scared Then I felt guilty because my grandfather was confused and sad and then we continued to eat in silence except for the movement of the flies

Tone and Mood Tone: guilt at the end, in the beginning frustration- freaking out over the flies, anxious Mood: makes us feel strange, dark mood, creepy

Look back at the title and he wept so that the Egyptians heard him Reference in the bible to the Egyptians- Moses parted the red sea for them Sins? Poverty- do the flies represent it? The reaction of the grandfather was as strong as if the Egyptians had heard it to the grandson
