2 Adult Caddisfly Occurrence Scheme Background For as long as I can remember I have had an interest in insects, as a boy I would spend my summer holidays catching butterflies, hunting down grasshoppers and feeding hapless flies to hungry spiders. When I started fly-fishing detailed study of the insects that the fish I was trying to catch actually fed on, was for me, a natural development. I have since spent many years collecting and studying the mayflies (Ephemeroptera) and stoneflies (Plecoptera). With the mayfly species I was especially keen to try and understand the different ways these enigmatic creatures transform from the nymph stage to the adult dun stage (subimagines). Obviously, knowledge from this has helped my fly-fishing. In more recent years my curiosity started to turn to the world of caddisflies (Trichoptera) but my fly-fishing books had only the briefest of information and I wanted to know much more. Since 1993 I have had the great fortune to fly-fish with various fly-fishing teams representing England, as a result I have fly-fished in many different countries. During my travels and fishing at these events I have met with anglers from all over the world who also have a keen interest in the entomological side of the sport. From these meetings it soon became obvious that, with the adult caddisflies especially, our understanding (the UK fly-fisherman s that is) was full of huge gaps. In the spring of 2006 I had a letter printed in Fly-Fishing & Fly-Tying, a popular and informative UK based fly-fishing magazine. In this letter I appealed for help from the readers, I needed them to catch and send me any adult caddisflies they came across whilst out fishing. My idea was then to identify these specimens and create a database of where & when our different adult caddisfly species are on the wing, the aim being to get a better understanding of adult caddisflies and their relationship with the sport of fly-fishing. This was the birth of the Adult Caddisfly Occurrence Scheme. Since the scheme started I have had numerous samples sent in and the database has grown steadily. I have also enrolled other "collectors" (who are not anglers); these have included my family & friends and members of various local natural history societies. To be honest anyone who has shown even the slightest interest has been roped in! This has expanded the areas from which I receive samples to beyond that of the fly-fishing related sites, as a result, an even greater variety of species are now starting to come through. Each year all the data is sent on to Dr. Ian Wallace (from The National Trichoptera Recording Scheme), the Natural History Museum, the Freshwater Biological Association, the River Fly Partnership, Buglife, my local natural history society, all those who send in samples and anyone else who just asks.

3 2008 Results What a strange year 2008 turned out to be, the weather never did settle down in the summer and then winter came early. However, despite the mixed weather the caddisflies had to carry on with their lifecycles. I have had many samples sent and also managed plenty of collecting trips of my own. The number of samples sent in and analysed was almost double those from Every single adult caddisfly sample is important to the scheme but I would like to make special mention to Heather Olsen and Stephen Moores who supplied very regular samples from their own local areas throughout You will see very many entries with these two names alongside. Another special thanks must go to Andrew Dixon. Andrew, one of my best friends and fellow England International fly-fisherman has taken a particularly keen interest in the scheme once again during This is very fortunate for me, not only is Andrew a great collector he can also identify the adults to species level. His main interest is recording aquatic insects from the River Eden (in Cumbria) and its tributaries, not just caddisflies but mayflies and stonefies too. When I was snowed under with samples Andrew volunteered to help me out with the identification and you will see his initials (AD) many times in the "determiner" column. The first samples of 2008 came in from Cornwall, this also happened in 2007 and Not that surprising as spring down there is usually a week or two in front of the rest of us. The samples then came in steadily up to the end of November, again as expected. The 2008 data is made up with caddisflies from 86 different species, a fantastic effort from everyone involved. On the 2008 chart the first two columns show the genus & species of the samples. The next two columns are the approximate location and National Grid Reference (NGR) of where a sample was caught. In the next column is the date that the sample was caught; if more than one sample of a species is recorded then the dates are shown from the earliest down to the last record of that species. The next column is the determiner, here are the initials of the person who identified the sample; in the case of this 2008 data it is either SC for Stuart Crofts or AD for Andrew Dixon. Next is the name of the sample supplier, so if you sent in a sample during 2008 your name will be somewhere in this column. The last column is for brief notes about the sample and its capture. I have also put all the information on a CD-ROM, this has given me the opportunity to present the data on even more charts, in full colour, with far more detailed notes and with photographs of a good number of the species. Copies of the CD-ROM are available for Money raised will go towards the funding of the 2009 scheme. If you would like a copy of the CD-ROM just post me a cheque (made payable to Torrentis Products) with your name and address and note requesting the CD. Last, but by no means least, a huge thank you to everyone who has sent in samples, without you the scheme simply would not exist. Stuart M Crofts, January 2009
