2 Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Animalia Chordata Actinopterygii Scorpaeniformes Scorpaenidae Taxon Name: Scorpaena notata Rafinesque, 1810 Synonym(s): Scorpaena afimbria Slastenenko, 1935 Scorpaena scrofa subspecies afimbria Slastenenko, 1935 Scorpaena teneriffea Jordan & Gunn, 1898 Scorpaena ustulata Lowe, 1841 Regional Assessments: Mediterranean Europe Common Name(s): English: French: Spanish: Red Scorpionfish, Rockfish, Small Red Scorpionfish Petite Rascasse, Petite Rascasse Rouge, Rascasse Pustuleuse, Scorpène Cabracho, Escórpora, Gallineta Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1 Year Published: 2015 Date Assessed: July 15, 2014 Justification: This is a widespread, common and commercially exploited species. The population trend has not been quantified but it is not believed to be declining at nearly the rate required to be listed as threatened under criterion A. Therefore, this species is listed as Least Concern. Geographic Range Range Description: This species is present in the east Atlantic, from Morocco to Senegal including the Cape Verde Islands. In the Mediterranean Sea, this species is found almost everywhere in suitable habitats. Records include Iberian coasts (Valle et al. 2003, Coll et al. 2006), Balearic Sea (Herler et al. 1999, Moranta et al. 2006, Deudero et al. 2007), French coasts (Gaertner et al. 1998, Ruitton et al. 2000, Claudet et al. 2006), Ligurian Sea (Molinari and Tunesi 2003, Tunesi and Molinari 2005, Tunesi et al. 2006), south Adriatic Sea (Ungaro et al. 1999, Bussotti et al. 2002), south Tyrrhenian Sea (La Mesa and Vacchi 1999) and Aegean Sea (Kallianiotis et al. 2004, Labropoulou and Papaconstantinou 2005, Karakulak et al. 2006, Ozaydin et al. 2007). It is rare in the north Adriatic Sea but does occur there. It is also present in the Black Sea (as Scorpaena notata afimbria). 1
3 Country Occurrence: Native: Albania; Algeria; Bulgaria; Cape Verde; Croatia; Cyprus; Egypt; France; Gambia; Georgia; Gibraltar; Greece; Israel; Italy; Lebanon; Libya; Malta; Mauritania; Monaco; Morocco; Portugal; Romania; Russian Federation; Senegal; Slovenia; Spain; Syrian Arab Republic; Tunisia; Turkey; Ukraine; United Kingdom; Western Sahara FAO Marine Fishing Areas: Native: Atlantic - northeast, Atlantic - eastern central, Mediterranean and Black Sea - 2

5 Population There are no population data available for this species in the Eastern Central Atlantic. In the Mediterranean, this is a widespread and moderately common species. Aggregated catch statistics for all scorpaenid species show a more or less stable catch of 1,500 to 3,000 mt per year since the 1960s (FAO Fishstat). According to Valle et al. (2003), 318 specimens (1.3 to 15.3 cm TL) were collected in November 1995 at six locations along the east coast of Spain (Tabarca, Santa Pola, Postiguet, San Juan, Campello and Villajoyosa). One hundred and eight fishing operations were taken up to a m depth, with an approximated duration of 10 minutes by means of a beam trawl of 1.8 m width and 0.8 m height. Ozaydin et al. (2007) mentioned that 565 specimens (8.4 to 17.0 cm TL) were collected from Izmir Bay (central Aegean Sea) between February and December 2005 using bottom trawls (mesh size 24 mm at stretched cod-end). Karakulak et al. (2006) reported that 108 specimens (8.1 to 15.1 cm TL) were collected from a survey conducted for selectivity by gill and trammel nets in the coastal waters of Turkey from March 2004 to February Current Population Trend: Unknown Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) This is a demersal species. It is common in rocky and vegetative littoral habitats although it may also be found at greater depths and above soft substrata. It is nocturnal and feeds on crustaceans and small fishes (Hureau and Litvinenko 1986). Systems: Marine Use and Trade This species may be consumed in the Eastern Central Atlantic on artisanal levels but this is not causing any population reduction. In the Mediterranean, this is a commercial species. Its flesh is tasty and used for making 'bouillabaisse' (Göthel 1992). Threats (see Appendix for additional information) There are no major threats known to affect this species, although it is intentionally fished. Conservation Actions No specific conservation measures are in place for this species. Credits 4
