A serious flurry of activity on the final day had the lead change several times with the final results of the Sea Horse event altering the Triple Crown standings. As suspected, everything went down to the wire. When the dust had cleared, the boat winning the Sea Horse tournament was Capt. Elliott Cline's Fish On with a total of six blue marlin releases (3,000 points), three of which came on the final day of the event. These efforts also won the first and third day release jackpots and the overall release jackpot, accumulating a fair chunk of change. Their main angler Robert Kathary picked up the High Point Angler award as well for his three blue marlin releases. Second place went to Overbudget with 2,000 points (four blue marlin releases) ahead on time of Georgie Girl which amassed 2,000 points the hard way: two blue marlin and five white marlin releases! Even though a fish was weighed in on day three by Rameseas, it failed to surpass Queen of Hearts' 560 pound blue (boated by SHAC s President, David DeSilva) leaving that fish to win all three daily jackpots and the overall fish jackpot, making for a rather lucrative payday. Not to be totally ignored, Click Through remained on the board with the Game Fish award going to her 64-pound wahoo. The bumper haul by Fish On on the ultimate day, propelled them into the winner's circle for the Triple Crown. Amassing 4,000 points from eight blue marlin releases kept Capt. Cline's boat ahead of the two boats in hot pursuit, Uno Mas and Georgie Girl, both on 3,700 points. Considering the close finishes in each of the individual events, this overall outcome only supports the notion that this may well be the most competitive billfish series in the world. Best of all, a single bad event for a boat does not completely eliminate your chances for a good finish. An excellent result from a really great series of events. The total billfish count in the Sea Horse tournament was 42: 34 blue marlin and a more seasonable eight white marlin. Those desiring to compare this event with other international billfish events will quickly work out that 0.61 is the average number of fish per boat per day. See Page 5 for full results

4 MAUI JIM WINS WORLD CUP IN KONA AND SEA GENIE TOPS BIG BLUE CHALLENGE World Cup Marlin Tournament - July 4th 2011 At first it looked like there may be no winner in the 27th annual World Cup Blue Marlin Championship (World Cup). Such a thing had not happened in the World Cup since 1987 when no blue marlin were landed that met the tournaments minimum size of 500 pounds. The unique World Cup allows teams to fish for 8 hours in their time zone anywhere in the world. The biggest blue marlin wins and there is no second place. This year, teams fished from Algarve, Portugal in the eastern Atlantic to French Polynesia and Hawaii in the Pacific. There were a total of 126 teams fishing in 15 locations around the world. The first time zone to fish was Algarve where VAMP hooked two large marlin at once. As often happens, the larger fish got away and the second marlin was a little under the tournament's 500 lb minimum size. Likewise, in the Cape Verde Islands, BEBICHE boated a marlin that was just below 500 lb.. As time zones moved west, teams fishing in the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores, Bermuda and other locations in the Caribbean, Central and South America could only release their marlin that were not big enough to qualify. It was not until fishing started in the western most time zone, where teams in French Polynesia and Kona, Hawaii started to fish, that fishing turned red hot. With multiple hookups from a Kona fleet of 46 teams, three boats landed large marlin. MAUI JIM, SEA GENIE and FIVE STAR were the hot boats. MAUI JIM with Capt. Thomas Casey and angler Scott Shaw weighed in a 729 lb marlin to win top prize. SEA GENIE, with Capt. Gene Vanderhoek and angler Curt Fujimoto were top boat in the Big Blue Challenge with their 5851/2 lb blue marlin. Angler Warren Keinath with Capt. Carlton Taniyama aboard the FIVE STAR weighed in a 5251/2 lb marlin which placed them just short of the other two teams. Total payout was over $425,000 which is the second largest award in the history of the World Cup. It was the seventh time in the 27 year history of the World Cup that the winning fish had come from Kona, Hawaii. Bermuda is second with six wins. Over the years, the World Cup, which always takes place on July 4, has had winners come from ten different locations around the world. The World Cup supports both the IGFA and The Billfish Foundation. For further information visit Tournament Director Mike Leech, can be reached at (954) or mike@bluemarlinworldcup.com. QUE MAS HOOKS TOP BILLFISH PRIZE AGAIN Published Jun 30, 2011 ROYAL GAZETTE Que Mas continued their utter domination of the Bermuda Billfish Release Cup taking their fourth title in four years. The Florida-based team swept the board at the event over the weekend, taking first place overall as well as the day one release jackpot and first place overall release jackpot. Unbeaten in the four years the tournament has been in existence, Que Mas, who were also the Bermuda Triple Crown Champions in 2008, set the tone for this year s cup from the first day and never looked back. Que Mas owner Wally Whitley bagged his team s second marlin on Saturday after the crew had already hooked a 600-lb blue, which gave them a 1000 points and a comfortable lead over Bermuda teams Margin Call and Over Budget. Michael Rego and the Margin Call crew endured a 20-minute fight to catch and release a blue marlin for 500 points, while Over Budget owner/angler Ricky Sousa snared a white to get his team on the board. Sunday s battle saw Over Budget get things going with a white release for angler Ricky Sousa Jr. before team Bree with captain Kyle Laine at the helm released a white for angler D.R. Repass, scoring their first points in the tournament. The final fish of the day came on Que Mas with angler and mate Donny Lange catching a white. Team Over Budget s timing on their white release turned out to be the difference maker as they won the Daily Release Jackpot based on time while also securing third place team honors with 400 points. Team Margin Call s blue on day one was enough to place them in second place with 500 points. Team Que Mas white marlin was icing on the cake adding to their two blues on day one, scoring a total of 1,200 points to take the win. Bermuda Billfish Release Cup final standings: Que Mas First Place Team, Day One Release Jackpot Winner, First Place Overall Release Jackpot winner: $10,325, King Sailfish Mounts Trophies, Steve Goione Artwork and Fin-Nor Rod & Reel. Margin Call Second Place Team, Second Place Overall Release Jackpot winner. $3,630, King Sailfish Mounts trophies, Steve Goione Artwork, Fin-Nor Rod & Reel. Over Budget Third Place Team, Third Place Overall Release Jackpot winner, Day Two Daily Release Jackpot winner. $6,695, King Sailfish Mounts Trophies, Steve Goione Artwork and Fin-Nor Rod & Reel.

SURVEY TO BE CONDUCTED: RECREATIONAL FISHING August 9, 2011 by Bernews In the coming weeks, staff from the Department of Environmental Protection will be conducting a survey of recreational fishing activities in order to collect information about the fishing habits of this marine resource user group, with an aim to better manage Bermuda s fish stocks and to avoid their being overfished. Department staff will be visiting shoreline areas to interview people who are fishing and also going out on the water to interview boaters. In addition, there will be a mail survey of boat owners. This survey, which begins this month and will continue into September, aims to collect information on how often people fish, the types of fish they catch, and of how much of it they catch. We would also like to test the public s awareness of recent changes to the Fisheries Regulations introduced over the past year, and how they feel about them.
