3 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU February April June August October December # of Bass # of Bream Lake Conditions The lake s watercolor is clear green. The lake water will be darkest following fertilization and water clarity will become clearer as the fertilizer is consumed by the phytoplankton. The lake s surface water temperature is approximately 68 to 72 degrees and varies with the current weather. The rainfall chart shows the strange spring dry spell that we are experiencing. There has only been.1 inches of precipitation recorded at Lake LU since 6, 24. This is an abnormality. I am certain that the increased warmth has caused the bass and bream to spawn early. Bass have been observed fanning beds for about the past 3 weeks. Bass Fishing A picture is worth a thousand words. I will let the ed fish photos do most of the talking. Bass fishing is as good as it can get. As many of you have seen in the recent photos, bass fishing is excellent. According to the fish report, numbers and pounds of bass caught during were the highest monthly totals in the past 4 years. 426 bass were caught in 24 for 39.5 pounds, which brings the yearly total to 82 fish totaling 734 pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.91 pounds per bass. The best lure to use while bass are bedding is the plastic lizard. Junebug and green are the best colors. Small jigs and spinnerbaits have had limited success. Crank baits and jig and pigs have not been producing that well. About 2 weeks ago I went fishing and the bass were hitting top water plugs fairly well. The other evening, Mr. Mike Gordy caught a 7-pound bass on a homemade top water plug that I made for him about a year ago. As the weather continues to warm, top water action will continue to improve. Reminder: Please release all orange-tagged bass. These bass are part of a growth study. Our current throwback slot limit is 17 2 inches, 8 fish under or over the slot per person per day. All bass must be measured with mouth closed and tail pinched.

4 Anglers must release all bass in this slot, as these are our primary egg layers. LU. Fishermen must check out their catch with the Lake Manager before leaving Lake Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing also has been excellent bream were caught in 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 2241 fish totaling 16.5 pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.47 pounds per bream. The month of has been the best bluegill in recent record. This increased bluegill harvest is a good indicator that there are more bream available as forage for big bass. The most effective bream baits are live red worms, waxworms and mealworms. Crickets have been non-productive. Small plastic jigs with ultra light rigs have caught some impressive numbers of large bluegill. I have had success using 2-inch Rapala minnows and black 2-inch single tail grubs. Many bream fishermen use small rooster tail spinners and have caught many slab bluegills. We have had approximately 3 bream over one pound caught in the past month. Bream fishing will continue to improve throughout the spring as the weather warms. Remember, bluegill go on the bed on the first full moon and shell crackers bed the first new moon in April. Additional Lake LU Information Remember to utilize the Nature Trail System at Lake LU. 7 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU February April June August October December # of Bass # of Bream Lake Conditions The lake watercolor is blue-green. I will fertilize the lake at recommended rates every 1 to 14 days. Many of the anglers at Lake LU do not thoroughly understand the fertilization process used in lake management. If anyone ever has any questions about the fertilization program, please call or and I will gladly discuss reasons for lake fertilization. The key reason is to increase total productivity. The lake turned green earlier this year than any year in my seven year past. Bass Fishing Bass fishing has been very slow. I think that the bass are just about to come off bed. Early morning and late evening is the best time to fish Lake LU. According to the April fish report, numbers of bass caught during April were the highest monthly totals in the past 5 years. 336 bass were caught in April 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 1138 fish totaling pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.9 pounds per bass. The best advice that I can give bass anglers is to fish top water plugs in the very early morning and shift to plastic worms later in the day. Pop-R s, Zara Pup s, Rapala minnows and weightless flukes are the best top water lures. The best worm colors are Junebug, Motor oil and pumkinseed. Reminder: Please release all orange-tagged bass. These bass are part of a growth study. Our current throwback slot limit is 17 2 inches, 8 fish under or over the slot per person per day. All bass must be measured with mouth closed and tail pinched. Anglers must release all bass in this slot, as these are our primary egg layers.

8 LU. Fishermen must check out their catch with the Lake Manager before leaving Lake Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing also has been excellent. 315 bream were caught in April 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 5346 fish totaling pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.43 pounds per bream. The month of April has been the best bluegill April in recent record. This increased bluegill harvest is a good indicator that there are more bream available as forage for big bass. This could be why bass are slow to bite. Why would a bass want to eat a piece of plastic when there are enormous numbers of its favorite food in the lake? The most effective bream baits are live red worms and crickets. Waxworms and mealworms have been non-productive as they are cooler weather baits. Small plastic jigs with ultra light rigs have caught some impressive numbers of large bluegill. I have had success using 2-inch Rapala minnows and black 2-inch single tail grubs. Many bream fishermen use 1/16 th ounce rooster tail spinners and have caught many slab bluegills. We have had approximately 3 bream over one pound caught in the past month. Bream fishing will continue to improve throughout the spring as the weather warms. Remember, bluegill go on the bed on the first full moon and shell crackers bed the first new moon in April. Additional Lake LU Information On Thursday, 13, 24, Lake LU will be the site of the Farm Safety Day Camp hosted by the Sumter County Soil and Water Association. On this day from 7: a.m. to 2: p.m., local area youths will be at Lake LU to learn farm and equipment safety, hunting and water safety, and home safety. I want to remind anglers that while they are fishing at Lake LU, they are guests of The University of West Alabama and should conduct themselves accordingly. This lake is managed by UWA and not by state Game and Fish authorities; therefore, we have rules and regulations that apply to Lake LU that may not apply to other state and/or public lakes. Any person found in violation of the rules and regulations of Lake LU are subject to having their fishing privileges revoked. 11 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU February April June August October December # of Bass # of Bream Lake Conditions The lake watercolor is dark green. Fertilizer applications have given us a good response this year. Secchi disc depths on Sunday, 3, 24 indicated 2 inches of visibility. Surface water temperature a week earlier was 85 o F. Fertilizer applications will be fewer and farther between. I will be maintaining 16 2 inches of visibility. Typically no fertilizer applications are required after June 5. If anyone has any questions concerning the application of fertilizer at Lake LU, please feel free to contact me. We are now in the typical summer-time pattern. Best fishing is early-morning or late evening. Bass Fishing Bass fishing has been feast or famine. On cooler, cloudy days anglers have good catches and on hot, sunny days bass anglers may fish for hours without a single bite. I think that the bass are just about to come off bed. This year we have experienced one of the longest bass spawning periods that I can recall. According to the fish report, numbers of bass caught during were generally average monthly harvests. 169 bass were caught in 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 137 fish totaling 1157 pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.88 pounds per bass. The best advice that I can give bass anglers is to fish top water plugs in the very early morning and shift to plastic worms later in the day. Some bass anglers have been catching fish with crank baits. Red colored plastic worms have had the best success. These include Red Shad, Red Bug, and Plum. Reminder: Please release all orange-tagged bass. These bass are part of a growth study. Our current throwback slot limit is 17 2 inches, 8 fish under or over the slot per person per day. All bass must be measured with mouth closed and tail pinched.

12 Anglers must release all bass in this slot, as these are our primary egg layers. LU. Fishermen must check out their catch with the Lake Manager before leaving Lake Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing has been excellent bream were caught in 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 7267 fish totaling pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.43 pounds per bream. This increased bluegill harvest is a good indicator that there are more bream available as forage for big bass. This could be why bass are slow to bite. Why would a bass want to eat a piece of plastic when there are enormous numbers of its favorite food in the lake? At this time of the year, bream prefer crickets and small red worms. If an angler just wants to catch fish and is not picky about what he or she catches, they should rig up a Zebco 33 with 6 pound test fishing line, tie on a small, curl-tail jig and just fish. At least that way you will be catchin and not just fishin. Additional Lake LU Information Saturday, June 12, 24 is Alabama Free Fishing Day. This is one day out of the year that there are no license requirements for both residents and non-residents. However, ALL LAKE FEES AND BOAT RENTAL COSTS STILL APPLY. We expect a June visit from Mr. Jay Haffner, Fisheries Biologist with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. I will detail Mr. Haffner s report on Lake LU in the June fishing newsletter. Feel free to visit Lake LU s website at Thank you, Roger Limerick Lake Manager Lake LU lrr@uwa.edu

14 5-year Number of Bass at Lake LU # of Bass 2 # of Bass 21 # of Bass 22 # of Bass 23 # of Bass 24 Total Monthly Rainfall at Lake LU Total Monthly Rainfall

15 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU February April June August October December # of Bass # of Bream Lake Conditions Near record rainfall has been the topic of discussion for almost the entire month of June. June rainfall totals added up to 1.4 inches of measured precipitation at Lake LU. This brings the yearly rainfall total to 36.4 inches of rainfall since 1, 24. I believe that it has rained 17 out of the last 19 days. If anyone has additional rainfall information, please send it to me. With the surplus of rainfall, most of the fertilizer in the lake has been flushed down the drain. When sunny conditions return, I will begin small applications of fertilizer. The lake watercolor is a clear green. Water temps have cooled off considerably with the extra rainfall. Bass Fishing Bass fishing has been terribly slow. I feel that bass fishing has been slow due to the increased amount of forage bream in the lake this year. Bass fishing could also be slow because of the reduction in bass anglers visiting Lake LU during the month of June. Many anglers don t like to fish in the rain. I feel that bass fishing is best during rainfall. According to the June fish report, 61 bass were caught in June 24 for 62.5 pounds, which brings the yearly total to 1368 fish totaling pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.89 pounds per bass.

16 LU. Fishermen must check out their catch with the Lake Manager before leaving Lake Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing has been excellent bream were caught in June 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 8834 fish totaling pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.42 pounds per bream. People are continuing to catch their limit of bream on crickets and red worms. This year has been the best bluegill year that I have seen since becoming Lake Manager. Feel free to visit Lake LU s website at Thank you, Roger Limerick Lake Manager Lake LU lrr@uwa.edu

19 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU Lake Conditions February April June August October December # of Bass # of Bream We are in the dog days of summer. The lake water is a yellowish-green and water clarity is limited to 19 inches of depth. It is hot and I predict no cooling weather in the forecast until mid. 5.4 inches of rain fell at Lake LU during the month of. Bass Fishing According to the fish report, 72 bass were caught in June 24 for 67 pounds, which brings the yearly total to 144 fish totaling pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.89 pounds per bass. Bass fishing is finally starting to improve. Last week I had a 4.75-pound bass caught by some guys from Tuscaloosa, AL. Bass are hitting plastic worms that are fished weightless. Bass fishing should be great this late fall and winter when the weather cools and bass begin feeding for the winter. Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing has been phenomenal bream were caught in 24 for 838 pounds, which brings the yearly total to 11,15 fish totaling pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.41 pounds per bream. 9.1 pounds per acre of bream have been caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. The next best bream year during my management was 22 when 7157 bream were caught through totaling pounds. Usually by this time of the year all catching of fish has slowed dramatically, but not this year. People are continuing to catch their limit of bream on crickets and red worms. This year has been the best bluegill year that I have seen since becoming Lake Manager. August 18, 24 will mark my 8 th year of being Lake LU s Lake Manager. Long-term management is the key to a successful fishery. Feel free to visit Lake LU s website at

23 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU # of Bass Lake Conditions February April June August October December # of Bream The lake water color is a very fertile green. I have not had to make applications of fertilizer since about mid-june. I will begin fall fertilizer applications when Secchi disc readings are greater than 2 inches of visibility. Current Secchi disc readings indicate inches of visibility. 4.9 inches of rain fell at Lake LU during the month of August and this rainfall caused a slight cooling of the lake. Average water temperatures range from 8 to 85 degrees. Bass Fishing Bass fishing is finally starting to improve. According to the August fish report, 4 bass were caught in August 24 for 55 pounds, which brings the yearly total to 148 fish totaling pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.91 pounds per bass pounds per acre of bass have been caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. In August, I had two 7-pound bass caught and removed from the lake. Some guys from Tuscaloosa claimed to each have caught and released a couple of 5 and 6-pound bass on one fishing trip. Plastic worm fishing has been constantly improving. Red and green colored worms are the most productive. Bigger bass are being caught on crank baits and rattletraps. Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing has been slowing down somewhat. 751 bream were caught in August 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 11,856 fish totaling 489 pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.41 pounds per bream. The best bait to use to catch bream is still crickets and red worms. Beetle spins and small rooster tails are the best artificial lures to use to catch bream. As the weather gets cooler the overall numbers of bream caught may go down, but the average weight per bream will increase. 27 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU # of Bass Lake Conditions February April June August October December # of Bream The lake water has finally cleared up from the standard summer color of marine green. Secchi disk readings indicate 3 + inches of visibility. I sometimes put a fall application of fertilizer into Lake LU. I looked back at old fertilizer records and saw where I had put 6 gallons of fertilizer in the lake on 17 October and by 3 October; the lake water was crystal clear. This year I chose not to apply because I knew that most of the fertilizer would go down the drain after the first big fall rain. I will begin 25 fertilizer applications around the end of February. October rainfall amounts were 5 inches at Lake LU. This is the time of the year when the water is the most clear and bass are biting the best. Bass Fishing Bass fishing is as good as it gets. The best fishing is right before a storm front, when the weather is warm and the sky is cloudy. According to the October fish report, 194 bass were caught in October 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 1721 fish totaling pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.91 pounds per bass. There have been pounds per acre of bass caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. Some anglers report good catches on crank baits and rattletraps. My favorite form of artificial fishing is the plastic worm. I feel it is the most relaxing form of bass fishing. Many people visit Lake LU and wonder why they don t catch more fish. One of the best secrets to improving your fishing is the pound test of your fishing line. I use 8-pound test fishing line. The line diameter is very small and I feel it doesn t spook the fish as bad as 12 or 15 pound test. I have been in the boat with friends using high test fishing line and I have had 3 strikes to them only having one strike. The best plastic worm to use at Lake LU (at least in my opinion) is the 4-inch FLW motor oil with red flake. Another good color is the 4-inch FLW electric grape. These worms are made by the Mann s Bait Company in Eufaula, Alabama and are sold at Wal-mart. The smaller worms plus the small diameter fishing line will give you more strikes. You may not catch the state

28 record, but you will catch more fish. The smaller bass are the best eating ones anyhow. Again I encourage anglers to take out their limit of 8 bass less than 17 inches long. These small bass make excellent table fare and the removal of these predators cause more prey to become available to feed the remaining bass. Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing has been slowing down somewhat. There were 425 bream caught in October 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 12,365 fish totaling pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.41 pounds per bream. There has been 1.55 pounds per acre of bream caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. Mr. Jay Haffner, District 3 fisheries biologist, states that this is a phenomenal bluegill harvest considering the acreage of Lake LU. I have been the Lake Manager for over 7 years now and no bluegill harvest in my record keeping has even came close to this year s harvest. As the weather gets cooler the overall numbers of bream caught may go down, but the average weight per bream will increase. The best cool weather live bait for bluegill are mealworms or wax worms. L.C. Brown will argue that the best bait year round is a live red worm. Last year while bream fishing from the bank, L. C. caught a 12-pound bass on 6-pound test fishing line. It was after this fish was caught that I went to using small pound test fishing line on my reels. Additional Lake Information Lake LU will be closed Wednesday, 24, 24 through Sunday, 28, 24 for The University of West Alabama s Thanksgiving holidays. Year to date rainfall totals 6 inches of precipitation since This number is already above the average annual precipitation amounts with more rain to fall. The lake water is gin-clear and the cold weather has the fish sluggish and slow to strike. Conditions will remain similar to present conditions until late February. Bass Fishing bass fishing was little better than October bass fishing. The best fishing is right before a storm front, when the weather is warmer and the sky is cloudy. According to the fish report, 165 bass were caught in October 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 1886 fish totaling pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.9 pounds per bass. There have been pounds per acre of bass caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. Bream Fishing Bluegill and shell cracker fishing has been slowing down more and more. There were 369 bream caught in 24 for 176 pounds, which brings the yearly total to 12,734 fish totaling pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.41 pounds per bream. There has been 14.7 pounds per acre of bream caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. Some dedicated bream anglers still manage to catch impressive bluegill catches regardless of poor weather conditions. The best live bait to use on bream in cold weather is waxworms and mealworms. Additional Lake Information

35 24 Bass Numbers vs. Bream Numbers at Lake LU Lake Conditions February April June August October December # of Bass # of Bream December rainfall totaled 5.9 inches of precipitation. Year to date rainfall totals 65.9 inches of precipitation since According to the U.S.D.A., the average annual precipitation for Sumter County, Alabama is inches of rainfall. This relates to 9.97 inches of rainfall above average. The U.S.D.A. Soil Survey manual states that 2 out of 1 years will have rainfall amounts over inches. Precipitation amounts for 24 came very close to this number. The lake water is gin-clear and the cold weather has the fish sluggish and slow to strike. Conditions will remain similar to present conditions until late February. I will start 25 fish reports with the 25 monthly newsletter. Bass Fishing December bass fishing was slow due to the cold weather and the holidays. The best fishing is right before a storm front, when the weather is warmer and the sky is cloudy. According to the December fish report, 32 bass were caught in December 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 1918 fish totaling 1726 pounds. This resulted in an average weight of.9 pounds per bass. There have been pounds per acre of bass caught at Lake LU since 1, 24. Winter bass fishing can be a very good time to try to catch a trophy bass. In general, from now to April is the best time of the year to catch a wall hanger. The best lures to use for winter bass fishing are the black and blue jig and pig, plastic worm fishing with the Carolina rig, and crank baits and rattletraps. Bream Fishing The year of 24, in my opinion, was the best bream harvest year in my 8-year history as Lake Manager at Lake LU. There were 195 bream caught in December 24 for pounds, which brings the yearly total to 12,929 fish totaling 535 pounds! This resulted in an average weight of.41 pounds per bream. There has been 16.1 pounds per acre of bream caught at Lake LU since 1, 24.
