7 We got 2.25 inches of rain at the lake for the month of October. Secchi disc readings indicate 42 inches of visibility. Water temperature is 64 F. Cool weather and cool water is upon us!

9 I took my wife Sheila out on the lake bass fishing one afternoon after work, and she caught this 7.5 pound, inch bass ON HER LAST CAST! The bass fishing was pretty slow that day and we hadn t caught very many fish. She always is much more patient than I am. Looks like her patience paid off!

11 My oldest son Logan has discovered that an entire living world exists outside of TV, computers and video games. In this photo he is holding up a small bass he caught while fishing with me. I sure hope I can get him hooked on fishing! We like to use watermelon black pepper worms when we bass fish.

12 Phillip Lankford, a UWA student, poses with a nice throwback slot bass. I think this bass was caught on a white spinnerbait. Tommy Hedrick caught this nice bunch of yearling bass. Tommy likes to use cherry seed finesse worms and Spike IT glow dip on his plastic worms.

13 Jay Haffner is planning on conducting an electro-shock survey of Lake LU on Friday, November 3, 2017 at 9:30 am. I will include photos and a write up of his survey in the November newsletter BASS HARVEST REGULATION Anglers have an unlimited bass harvest at Lake LU, as long as the bass is less than 14 inches in total length. In addition, anglers may also harvest 1 fish greater than 22 inches in total length, per person, per day at Lake LU. Please continue to encourage anglers to harvest small bass. ~ Jay Haffner Bluegill harvest REDUCED to 25 bream per person per day

14 On October 31, I took my Alabama momma on a fishing trip on Lake LU. I was going to bass fish and Miss Eunice was going to bream fish. She caught six big slab bluegill on her first six casts! Needless to say it wasn t long before I switched over to one of her Zebco 202 reels and started casting crickets! We had a great time! It was the first time in 20 years that I had been live bait fishing on Lake LU. Miss Eunice has shared with me much of her 85 years of wisdom over the years. On this day she taught

15 me that it s more fun to catch fish than it is to bounce plastic worms along the bottom of the lake all day! She and I are both catchermen! I caught this nice bluegill on my first cast after I switched over to her Zebco 202!

16 We were fishing in the upper end of the lake when I caught this slab bull bream. It must have weighed about a pound! Our secret was using a casting bubble! It is heavy and allows you to make long distance casts without having to throw too hard thus tearing your cricket off in the process. REMINDER: Bream harvest has changed and anglers may only catch 25 bream per person per day.

17 One Thursday I went bush-hogging fire breaks. I forecast a tremendous controlled burn season this winter. There is a nearly 5-foot tall litter layer that has formed during the growing season.

18 One Friday I took the UWA backhoe and pulled out this cedar tree that had fallen across the Forest Trail. That backhoe did the work of 10 men! I was hiking around the north end of the campus and discovered a thicket of Trifoliate Orange (Poncirus trifoliata).

19 I have an uncle that tells me that you can make a type of Key Lime Pie from the juice of these tiny, sour oranges. I will have to call him and get the recipe from him. Maybe this is enough fruit to get enough juice to make a pie with.

20 While I was hiking I discovered this gigantic Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) tree. It is one of the largest diameter Osage trees that I have ever seen. The yellow flowers (Burr marigold) are in full bloom around Lake LU. Now is the time to take any fall photo opportunities that you might have.

21 The upper end of Lake LU is in full bloom. A wood duck nesting box among the yellow flowers.

22 A dew covered spider web. I personally will be glad when all the spider webs are taken down by the cold weather. Sorry Charlotte!

23 A cool blue October sunset. Lake LU will be closed from Monday, November 20, 2017 through Friday, November 24, 2017 for the UWA Thanksgiving Holidays. Lake LU will reopen on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 6:00 am.
