1 The Stan's Spin More About Stan Stan's Archive Part 2 Have opportunity to closely observe how the top pros in the business go about putting bass in the boat and something quickly becomes apparent. If you think that means they re forever changing baits after just a few unproductive casts--- guess again. What they re more likely to be doing is using different presentations with dependable baits they ve scored with before or perhaps changing the size or bait colors. I ve had ample opportunity to make the observations I m talking about. I was present as a press observer for all but two of the 30 first Bassmasters Classics. As a press observer I was right there in the boat with the contender. I had a chance to see every move a contestant made from blast off to weigh in. I doubt those savage fighting bass in Mexico's Lake El Sallto had ever seen a Stan's Spin spinnerbait before I showed them mine. That's undoubtedly one of the reasons I was able to clobber some beauties down there with it.

2 Different presentations are just as important when it comes to fishing a spinnerbait as it is with other bass baits. The Stan s Spin, the lure that was named after me when it was brought to market years ago, makes this easier than ever. Fishermen are prone to forget that. Suppose you go out and have a particularly good day throwing one lure in just one way. What are you going to do the next time you re on the water? Odds are you ll do exactly the same thing you did last time. Now there s nothing wrong with that approach, but only up to a point. It makes no sense at all to go on blindly heaving the same hunk of hardware in exactly the same fashion if the fish you re after don t give some indication it s what they want. I ve done that more often than I care to admit. If you ll think about it, and be honest while you re at it, I ll bet you have too. I recall a conversation I had once with a pro bass angler from San Ramon, California. This was some time ago and not too long after the Stan s Spin became available. I used the Stan s Spin silver shad spinnerbait in a Western Outdoor News bass tournament earlier this year on Lake Shasta, he said. I used the bait mostly while fishing timber in deep water. I caught spotted bass by just letting the lure flutter down through the branches. Have you shown the bass in your home area one of these Stan's Spin spinnerbaits yet? Go back and read that last sentence. This pro wasn t just heaving the Stan s Spin out there next to cover and reeling it in again. As a matter of fact he told me he didn t really make what you d term a standard cast at all. Instead he flipped the spinnerbait into the timber and then let it drop straight down. His hits came as the lure fell.

If you ve got a Stan s Spin, tie it on next time you re out and drop it into clear water alongside your boat. Let it fall on a slack line and you ll see what I m talking about. The Mylar blade whirls like the prop on a helicopter as it flutters its way down through the cover. But while I said it looks like a miniature helicopter, I recall this California pro telling me he thought it looks more like something else. And the something else this talented California angler had in mind is the how and why of how he knocked those bass in Lake Shasta for a loop. To me he said, the Stan s Spin resembles a dying baitfish as it flutters down through the cover. That s why it s such a great fall bait. Just cast and let it drop. That s what I did with on Lake Shasta. Most of the fish I caught at Lake Shasta using the technique I ve detailed were spotted bass. The spots I caught on the Stan s Spin averaged about 2 ½- pounds, he said, and that s larger than average for Shasta....It's always wise to show largemouth bass something they've not seen before. Now and then I've found times when I get a better reaction by removing the up front metal blade from my Stan's Spin as I've done here. Spotted bass weren t the only species that liked the looks of the Mack s Lure Stan s Spin that day at Shasta. This experienced angler said he also caught a number of trout on the same bait. I had a German brown that weighed 5-pounds, he said, and a rainbow of about the same size. I was shocked!

4 I remember this pro, his name was Grant, had an amateur fishing companion along in that WON Bass Tournament on Lake Shasta. My partner asked if I d loan him one of my Stan s Spins, he recalls, but I only had one myself at the time. My friend Greg Zash, of Oregon, knows that those Pacific Northwest smallmouth bass will smack a Stan's Spin as readily as the largemouth. We've fished the John Day River together on more than once occcasion. I've also done particularly well fishing that lure on some of the fast water spots on Oregon's Umpqua River.

5 As I ve said many times before in these Mack s Lure columns, don t get stuck using any one lure in the same fashion hour after hour if the fish fail to respond. Vary your routine until the fish you re after start telling you what it is they ll eat. That s what this pro did with the Stan s Spin in that Lake Shasta Tournament. In my next column we ll take a closer look at some of the other tactics it might pay dividends to try with your own Stan s Spin.
