1 February 2019 From the Presidents Pen Next Board Meeting February 13th At the Library 11:00 A.M. President s Message It is with deep regret that I announce the passing of William Bill Bryan. Bill was a Vietnam Marine veteran who had worked as the Partners Point contractor for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management for ten years. Bill s mechanical knowledge kept the Vietnam era fork lift known as Big Green running even though parts were not always available for it. Upon the completion of his contract Bill was instrumental in Anglers United as well as constant working and coordination with the city, county, Arizona State Parks and Arizona Game and Fish Division. He was also a principal supporter and organizer of the Sea Scout program here in Lake Havasu City. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and worked with him. We also lost one of our winter visitors this year. Frank Ball, who was from Michigan, had helped at Partners Point for many years during his winter visits. Frank was a World War II veteran having served in the navy submarine service in the pacific. There is still no word on when we will be able to start work again at Partners Point. It has been indicated that the roads may not be complete until March. Anglers United wants to thank all of our volunteers who assisted at the Western Outdoor News Arizona Open bass tournament registration and at the three day weigh-in. The tournament was a big success. The winner bringing in 15 bass weighing pounds was Todd Woods. 1

It would be a great opportunity for fishermen and women to get together and exchange fish stories and information maybe even have a little friendly competition. 4 Tackle Tips By Dave Bohl The smallmouth bass are in pre-spawn and ready to go into spawn. The recent Western Outdoor News Arizona Open bass tournament, considered their Winter tournament, was held here on Lake Havasu and the number and size of bass caught were phenomenal. The winning angler in the 3 day tournament brought in 15 fish with a combined weight of pounds. The top 15 anglers all brought in more than 33 pounds. What was remarkable was the large number of smallmouth bass that were brought in weighing more than 4 pounds. The largest was just under 7 pounds! The smallmouth were being caught on swimbaits on a jig head and a swim jig knowns as a bladed jig. These are both excellent when searching for pre-spawn smallmouth. The water temperature during the 3 days increased from 49 degrees up to by the end of the tournament. As the smallmouth move up to spawn the use of a Carolina Rig with a lizard will become excellent to use. During the spawn the sight of that lizard will have the bass very aggressive to get rid of it. Other excellent lures to use are small jigs representative of crawfish or panfish coming to eat the eggs. Remember with the clear water the smallmouth will be spawning deeper than largemouth. It is not uncommon here in Lake Havasu to see smallmouth beds in 15 feet of water. Look carefully on the rocky points extending out towards deep water and on shelves that have rocks with a dropoff into deep water. The Arizona Game and Fish Division is holding a round table meeting here in Lake Havasu City on February 11 th at 6 p.m.. The meeting will be held at ASU-Lake Havasu in Santiago hall on Swanson. That is located in the administration building by the flagpole. This will be an open discussion forum where AZGFD will present the results of their creel survey of Lake Havasu and the recent fall 2018 electrofishing survey. Public input is definitely wanted during this open discussion to learn about the community experiences and desires. **************************************************************************************** Our deepest sympathy to the family of Frank Ball 4
