1 November 2018 From the Presidents Pen Next Board Meeting November 14th At the Library 11:00 A.M. President s Message The Winter Season is upon us. We opened for business at the swap meet on October 21 st and will be open on Sundays through the Spring Striper Derby. We will not be open on November 25 th, the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Volunteers are needed to help work our swap meet booth. We have divided the Sundays into two sessions. The morning session is from 7:00 a.m. 10:30. The afternoon session is from 10:30 2:00 p.m. Please contact our vice president, Marilyn Butcher, to find out which dates are open. These are excellent opportunities to learn more about our program and discuss fishing with our guests, plus you anglers will learn the lake! The London Bridge Days parade float was excellent. We worked on Friday the 26 th creating an attractive float based on the brush program, to included examples of our artificial habitat and a natural habitat brush pile. The work paid off as we were awarded a 3 rd place trophy. Not bad for our first attempt in the annual parade. After all of the hard work by our volunteers on rebuilding the brush boat it is fully operational. The 3rd place trophy We will hold our first picnic of the season on November 10 th at Rotary Park. All are invited. Please contact Marilyn for more information on the picnic. The last word that we have received is that the intersection and traffic light into the Havasu Riviera should be completed by the end of December. Hopefully we can begin our brush program and placing new artificial habitat into the lake in January. A Technical committee meeting is scheduled for November 8 th. Some of the subjects that will be discussed is the days and hours of operation at Partners Point, use of the Volunteer hall, new volunteer agreements etc. Hopefully the startup of the Technical Committee again will lead to better relations between the BLM and the volunteers. One of our members, Captain Bill Bryan, is having serious medical problems and we are asking you to keep him in your prayers. 1

2 ****************************************************************** From the Vice Presidents Desk We got the third place trophy in the parade thanks to all the volunteers, not only for your help but the creative ideas and help figuring out how to make everything come together. It never seems like work when we work together on projects. Our next event is the picnic on the 10th of November bring a covered dish or dessert to share and bring something to put in our silent auction if you can. We were thinking about having our boat in the Christmas Boat Parade but with everything else we have been working on we are going to have to forgo that project this year. We always need help at the swap meet on Sundays, if you have a couple hours to spare it will definitely be appreciated, and it is a great opportunity to meet new people and learn more about Anglers from other members Dave is usually always there and you can always learn something new about fishing or the Lake from him. Don t forget to check out the schedule for the fishing classes on the last page of the newsletter. HAPPY THANKSGIVING On Friday the 26th of November we had a small ceremony to place the plaques honoring Dick and Robert on the Brush Boat. 2

3 Tackle Tips By Dave Bohl With the cooling weather Lake Havasu water temperature has dropped into the low 70 s. This drop in water temperature has resulted in the smallmouth bass becoming very active. At sun up the use of top water baits is ideal as long as the wind is calm. As the sun hits the water the small mouth become active and a switch to spinner baits, bladed jigs, and reaction baits is excellent. I have a preference for the Booyah Boogie Bait. This bladed jig works great around rocks, points and other isolated cover. I like the white and chartreuse color with a white Yum Boogee Tail. For some reason chartreuse and white colors are great in Lake Havasu. I also prefer fishing with a Rapala X-Rap this time of the year. Some people fish this with short jerks but I seem to do better simply casting it out towards rock ledges and drop offs and reeling it in just fast enough so that I can feel the vibration that it produces. In most of the country smallmouth bass are found in schools. I have not found that to be the case here in Lake Havasu. Fishing around the head of the coves and on the points have been productive. As of this writing I have not found the largemouth bass towards the back of the coves or around the tules yet. On our last trip out we caught some very nice smallmouth bass. I also had one of the most aggressive largemouth bass follow my bait up to the boat then slammed the Rapala X-Rap just as I was reeling it in. Hope this guy continues to grow and breed that aggressiveness into the lake stock! I bet that one really put up a fight 3

4 The decorating crew Fetching ma Unst Unr Sta No Re A Jacqui Dewar, Jerry Hatchell, Joe and Sharron Picchiottina spent a lot of time and hard work painting this tarp we were planning to use to skirt the boat only to learn it was not allowed in the parade because it wasn't fire proof. We may have gotten first place with it, next time we will get the right stuff. 4

For those of you who don t know, Bill is in the biggest battle of his life, fighting cancer, His daughters and Connie have moved him to Phoenix for treatments and are by his side. 6
