3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Missed another tournament. Hopefully all medical issues have been resolved. I am already looking forward to our tournaments in What a pleasure it has been to have watched our members pull in a lot of stripers this year and especially to see the success many of our new members have had. Fishing for stripers is like a passion for me. Actually fishing is a passion for me. The variety of fishing on Lake Norfork is fantastic. Panfish seem to be everywhere. My favorite is to fish blue gill near the shore with my fly rod. This year there were several in the one pound range. The neat part with pan fish is that they are still biting when the stripers have stopped. Lake Norfork is also a great lake for Kentucky, large and small mouth bass. I've caught all 3 types of bass on live bait & artificial bait, many times when not wanted such as during a Striper tournament. And then, occasionally I'll pick up a really nice Walleye. All in all Lake Norkfork is a fantastic, challenging, diverse & fun lake to fish. So, enjoy the good fishing and good eating. Hope to see you on the water. John Gerard Norfork Lake Fishing Report by Lou of Hummingbird Hideaway Resort Oct. 19th. Norfork Lake's fishing pattern is entering into its fall phase. Striped bass are continually moving and not being very consistent in their feeding location. Over the last week I have covered most of the central to northern parts of Norfork Lake from the Robinson area, up to the state line and also back though the Fouts area and all areas in between. The most notable thing is that the bait has moved back into the creeks with very little bait being found in the main lake area. I have found scattered stripers back in the creeks feeding on small 2 inch shad. I have also noticed a few scattered fish along the deep bluff lines in the main lake. My guests and I have caught stripers back in the creeks during the early morning hours as well as the afternoon. Both live thread fin shad as well as vertical jigging with a spoon has been working once you find the fish. As the water temperature continues to fall the fish will become more aggressive in their feeding habits and will start to school. Any time now you will find stripers feeding after dark up close to the banks. If you decide to try the night bite get a few suspending jerk baits and cast as close to the shoreline as you can, then retrieve to the boat very slowly. I will start fishing after dark this week with the full moon. Largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass are biting fairly well. The bigger bass started to move up into the sunken brush a week or so ago, but has since moved back out. I believe their move to deeper water occurred due to the drop in the lake level. Most of the sunken buck brush is now exposed or is out of the water. (fishing report continued on Page 4)

4 (fishing report continued from page 2) You can still find a few areas with brush out in the water, but I can only catch small fish in these areas. One of our guests loves to throw a jig and pig and is doing quite well. You will catch a lot of short fish, but the bigger ones are also in the area. You will be able to find some good bass in and around brush piles in feet of water. Vertical jigging with a spoon will start to work as the water temperature continues to cool. In general, soft plastics are working the best worked along the bottom starting in feet of water out to 40 feet of water. The bluegill bite is still very strong. If you want to fill up your freezer with a lot of tasty fillets get some crickets and fish around feet brush piles. I am finding a lot of schooling white bass back in the creeks feeding on the bait fish. Most of the whites are small to medium sized fish, but are a blast to catch. Spooning has been working very well. Crappie fishing has also been inconsistent. One of my lake friends caught 20 one day and then the next day they were gone. They are still roaming through the deeper water going from brush to brush. Keep checking out all your brush piles and you will find them. Norfork Lake water level continues to drop 3-4 inches per day. The lake level currently sits at which is only about 3 feet above normal pool. Normal pool is expected to be reached by month end. The lake surface water temperature is also falling and this morning was 70.3 degrees. The water temperature will continue to fall with our cool night and normal day time temps. The main lake is clear with the creeks and coves stained. Happy fishing and see you on the lake. Lou RECIPE CORNER - By John Gerard Blackened Fillets of Striped Bass * 1 tablespoon paprika * 2 teaspoons dry mustard * 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper *1 teaspoon ground cumin * 1 teaspoon black pepper * 1 teaspoon white pepper * 1 teaspoon dried thyme * 1 teaspoon salt * 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted * 6 (4 Striped Bass DIRECTIONS: Do this in a well ventilated area or outside. (Lots of steam) In a small bowl, mix together paprika, dry mustard, cayenne pepper, cumin, black pepper, white pepper, thyme and salt; set aside. Heat a heavy cast iron pan on high heat until extremely hot, about 10 minutes. Pour 3/4 cup melted butter into a shallow dish. Dip into butter, turning once to coat both sides. Sprinkle both sides with spice mixture, and gently pat mixture into hot pan without crowding. 5 Identification of Striper, Wiper, White Bass, and White Perch Similar appearances, varying length and creel limits, and the recent appearance of the aquatic nuisance species, the white perch, make proper identification of the striped bass, striped bass hybrid (or wiper), white bass, and white perch very important for Kansas anglers. White perch have become established in Cheney and Wilson reservoir and Kingman State Fishing Lake. White perch are capable of out competing native fish for food and space. Therefore, anglers are prohibited from moving white perch from one body of water to another. The following information will aid in the identification by providing distinguishing characteristics of each species. Individuals in a species and differing water conditions may impact the ease of identification and close examination may be needed. There is no daily creel limit on white bass or white perch. Creel limits on wipers and striped bass is 2/day statewide, check your regs for combined/aggregate limits at some lakes. 6 OCTOBER GUEST SPEAKER Our October guest speaker will be Will Peronni fromtracy Boat & Motor. Will has been a mechanic with Tracy Boat & Motor for the past several years. Will be providing the club with information and ideas on how to best protect the large investment we have in our boats and motors. Will shall be available to answer our many questions and to provide his insight on today s issues with fuel and other issues important to today s boaters.
