We had a tie for 3 rd place, John Casimer and Rob Turk each had a fish weighing 7 lb.7oz. and in 5 th was Craig Devries with a fish weighing 7 lb. Jim Shaffer was 6 th with his fish weighing 6 lb. 6 oz. and Roy Rush was 7 th with 5 lb. 8 th place went to John Gerard with 4 lb. 1 oz. Jack Engesetter Most fish were caught at Sally Hand to Jordan s and most were caught on Down Riggers. One I know came from trolling an 8-oz. weight. 2 All I can say is Oh what a beautiful day it was to be on the Lake! We had 14 contestants and everybody tied for 1 st place! Nobody caught a fish today although they were showing up on our depth finders at 65 ft. 90 ft. The fish must have had lock jaw today. I trolled, spooned and couldn t get one hooked. I did have one bite trolling a 10oz weight at approx. 250 ft. back. It started to take drag, but when I picked up the pole it let go. Most of the fishing was done in site of the parking lot. Even guys using live bait weren t doing much better. (Note these were not in the tournament). The drawing winner was me (Moose West) and I chose the life vest. Thanks for all the help at the weigh in again and as according to the rules the prize money will go back to the club to be used to purchase prizes at the weigh-in. Moose West, LNSC Tournament Director AUGUST 24th TOURNAMENT RESULTS Helpful Boa+ng Tips If your motor has a kill switch it needs to be connected while motor is running. Could result in a big fine. No standing in boat while you are running in the water. Everybody must be seated in the boat, not on the bow or gunnel, but inside the boat, or up in front or back cas?ng pla@orm. If you are trolling, be sure you stay at least 100 C. away from other boats. Please use common sense! Don t cross the back of a boat that is trolling, please give them room as most boats have 125 C. to 250 C. of line out behind them. Remember that if you have an inflatable life jacket they are only consider a life jacket if you are wearing them. If you chose to give/donate your fish to another fisherman and it will exceed their limit allowed you must give them a transfer paper that includes your name, date and # of fish you gave them along with your phone number. This will protect them should they get stopped by AGFC. If your motor is over 50 HP you must have proof of liability insurance in the boat All Fines will cost approx. $ acer you add your court cost. Remember a short fish or over the limit is $ for each fish!

6 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE from JOHN GERARD Live Bait fishing for Stripers This article will be covering the use of Circle Hooks, Leaders, Down Lines. Hooks My preference in hooks are circle hooks. They are a little harder to hook into a shad or shiner but the end result is that you can catch fish just as well as you can with other kinds of hooks and your fish are lip hooked which allows you to release them, when needed, unharmed. Circle hooks hook themselves. You do not set the hook like other hooks. Just pick up your rod and start winding. Actually, if you set the hook, you chance pulling it out of the fish s mouth. Match the hook to the size of your bait. A hook that is too large or heavy will cause an unnatural presentation. Leaders I like to use a 5 length of 10# 12# fluorocarbon and attach it to my long line with a barrel swivel. There are many knots that work well. However, my favorite knots for both hooks and barrel swivels are the Palomar knot, improved clinch knot and the Trilene knot. The reason I use a 5 leader is so I do not have to run the barrel swivel through my line guides and it is short enough to allow me to net the fish and in some waters it will give you a heads up that the fish is close. Down Lines This is simply a weight on your line which takes your bait to the fish. Generally a 2 3 ounce weight will work. So, again I use a 5 leader and one of 2 types of weights, a banana weight with a wire loop or chain on each end. Attach your long line to 1 loop and the leader to the other wire loop or chain. The other sinker is a barrel weight. I set it up by running your long line through the hole in the sinker, then slide on a plastic bead (to protect your knot), then attach the barrel swivel and finally attaching the leader with hook. There are many ways to hooking up your bait fish. I prefer to go under the jaw and out the top of the head. This allows the bait to swim with a more natural wounded minnow presentation. Now you are ready to fish. Drop your line just above the fish you are marking. Loosen your drag so that when the Striper takes the bait you will be able to hear your bait clicker. When the minnow is lowered it will be able to move around freely just above the stripers which will drive them insane. Most of the time the Striper will grab your bait and will automatically get hooked and will make a run. Pick up your rod, tighten the drag a little and start winding. This all works best if your boat is slowly moving.2mph to.5mph. The next newsletter will be discussing fishing with Planer Boards & Balloons. Remember, for best results, fish where the fish are or as Buck Perry said you can t catch fish where fish aint John Gerard

7 Identification of Striper, Wiper, White Bass, and White Perch Similar appearances, varying length and creel limits, and the recent appearance of the aquatic nuisance species, the white perch, make proper identification of the striped bass, striped bass hybrid (or wiper), white bass, and white perch very important for Kansas anglers. White perch have become established in Cheney and Wilson reservoir and Kingman State Fishing Lake. White perch are capable of out competing native fish for food and space. Therefore, anglers are prohibited from moving white perch from one body of water to another. The following information will aid in the identification by providing distinguishing characteristics of each species. Individuals in a species and differing water conditions may impact the ease of identification and close examination may be needed. There is no daily creel limit on white bass or white perch. Creel limits on wipers and striped bass is 2/day statewide, check your regs for combined/aggregate limits at some lakes. 8 FISHING REPORT FROM LOU GABRIC AT HUMMINGBIRD HIDEAWAY RESORT Norfork Lake fishing is in its summer pattern and fishing methods should be very similar for the next month. The striped bass bite continues to be good for most out on the lake. The easiest and most productive method of catching stripers at this time is with live bait. Live threadfin shad, shiners and small bluegills are all working well, with shad being the best type of live bait. I am currently finding large schools of stripers lying on the bottom in 70 feet of water. The best areas to find the stripers at this time are on points and large deep flats in the dam area and at the start of the Big Creek area (Long Point, Koso, Thumb, Point 1, Hudson) and also on the flats out in front of Sand Island in the Jordan area. Artificial baits are also producing striped bass. Try vertical jigging with a spoon or a 3 inch (or so) grub with a 1/4 or 3/8 ounce jig head. If you're jigging keep the action of your bait moving slow, use small twitches of the bait and work them slowly on the bottom. It is hard to feel the bite so be ready to set the hook with the slightest heaviness of your line while moving the bait. Trolling swimbaits and 4-5 inch crank baits are also producing some fish. A second area to catch hybrid bass and on occasion striped bass is in 25 feet (+ or - 5 feet) of water. The lake thermocline is roughly at 25 feet with good oxygenated water from the shore line out to 25 feet with about degree water temperature though out this water column. Most of the bait fish that I have found is in this 0-25 feet range so as you would guess it is holding lots of fish. I have found some schooling hybrids in the mid lake area in the 25 feet range feeding on shad. With this shallower water all types of artificial baits will work. I had a friend trolling deep diving crank baits and ran into schools of nice striped bass on points in the mid lake area. The walleye bite is getting good. Most walleye are being caught in feet of water on the bottom. Trolling a crawler harness with bottom bouncing weights are catching some nice fish as are deep diving crank baits such as a Flicker Shad. If you're using crank baits use about a 4 inch minnow imitating crank. If you just have shallow diving cranks you can always add some inline weight to get your bait down to the 20 feet level. I have always had the best luck when the bill of the crank digs into the bottom of the lake a little. Walleye are showing up all over the main lake including points and large flats. I have used thread fin shad set on the bottom and have picked up a few walleye. I have also caught walleye while I am striper fishing in 70 feet of water. Yesterday I did not land any walleye, but on 4 different occasions I set my hook on a light bite to bring up only my weight and leader with no hook. I would guess that I was getting numerous walleye bites. Happy fishing and see you on the lake. Pan fish are also in the 0-25 feet of water range. If you can find some brush pile in of water you will find some crappie, but most are roaming the flooded shoreline trees feeding on shad. Crickets are working well for blue gills in the shallow water. Happy Fishing and see you on the Lake, Lou This report was posted by Lou on August 15th, 2017 Watch for Lou s reports on his website at hummingbird-hideaway.com
