June 2018 From the Presidents Pen Next Board Meeting June 13th At the Library 11:00 A.M. President s Message It is with deep regret that I have to announce the passing of Robert E.

For decades he was working at every swap meet and was working at the Lake Havasu Fisheries Habitat program four days a week. For his dedication he was given a National Outstanding Volunteer Award.

The 2018 Western Outdoor News Striped Bass Fishing Derby was a fantastic success and brought in more large Striped Bass than I have seen on this lake. The largest weighed 24.

1 June 2018 From the Presidents Pen Next Board Meeting June 13th At the Library 11:00 A.M. President s Message It is with deep regret that I have to announce the passing of Robert E. Lee, one of our original members. Robert had dedicated a large part of his retired life to working with Anglers United. For decades he was working at every swap meet and was working at the Lake Havasu Fisheries Habitat program four days a week. For his dedication he was given a National Outstanding Volunteer Award. This award was presented to Robert in Washington, D.C. by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. We will never be able to replace Robert. The 2018 Western Outdoor News Striped Bass Fishing Derby was a fantastic success and brought in more large Striped Bass than I have seen on this lake. The largest weighed pounds and there were three more between and pounds. The fact that the lake is becoming loaded with gizzard shad has to have had a major impact on the size and healthiness of the Striped Bass population. There were 155 teams entered and 134 teams caught fish! This derby is the major annual fund raising event for the Lake Havasu chapter of Anglers United. The cutoff for our June election has passed and there is only one contested position. The positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer and Sergeant-at-arms are uncontested and will be passed by proclamation. The position of Vice- President is contested and an election will be held at our June 13 th meeting. The candidates for the position are Gary Visconti and Marilyn Butcher. You must be present to vote. Keep in mind there are no monthly board meetings during July and August. Our meetings will resume at the Library on September 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Overall fishing has picked up on our lake and Striped Bass, Black Bass and Panfish are all plentiful this time of the year. I am waiting to see if a new world record Redear Sunfish is caught. My wife, Fran, has had a great time fishing again. If you have attended my fishing classes you will know that she caught this largemouth bass on nothing else but a Chartreuse Blakemore Roadrunner. She also came up with this really nice Striped Bass. 1

From the Vice Presidents Desk My 2 Cents Worth Robert E. Lee 1928-2018 I met Robert at the swap meet some 10 years ago and he was doing what he loved to do, selling t-shirts and talking to people.

2 From the Vice Presidents Desk My 2 Cents Worth Robert E. Lee I met Robert at the swap meet some 10 years ago and he was doing what he loved to do, selling t-shirts and talking to people. I noticed the pictures of the brush program and with a name like Anglers United I was interested in what they did. I told Robert I loved fishing and would like to know more about the lake and he immediately said (although he didn t fish anymore) I should join AU to find out where the fish were.so I did and he was right. Robert was a man of few words but when he talked you listened. I learned a lot from this man, he was as easy going person as I have ever known letting very few things rattle him. Like Dick, he was a good friend and I will always have good memories of our times together. I started raising fishing worms last year and Robert would worm sit for me as I would for his tortoise as needed, that s what friends do for each other. His shoes will be hard to fill as he was truly one of a kind. I will miss our talks while working with him at the striper derby, the swap meets and the many years doing the habitat program with him. The Striper derby was held again this year with great success thanks to all the AU volunteers that helped. The results were better than expected as there were lots of smaller fish but also lots of bigger fish, and there were more entries this year. Don t know the money tally yet but know we took in more money so that s good. The brush boat is almost ready for the water thanks again to all the volunteers that have helped with this project. As most of you know AU will be voting on officers in June. We haven t done a general election for several years as we have been busy just trying keep the program going. I have been an AU member 9 years+ and vice-president 6 years+ and as of this time, I am withdrawing my name for re-election of the vice president position. I am a life time AU member and will help where and when needed if the timing works out. I have learned a great deal while working with Robert, Bill, Doug, Dave and all the members as to the operation and the goals of AU and especially enjoyed teaching the fishing classes. I would hope the habitat program will start back up, but there has been a lot of time gone by without any brush or maintenance done on the lake and with the program. Finally, as this will be my last article as vice-president I want to remind all AU members as to what AU s mission has been since It s been to improve the fish habitat here in Lake Havasu while working in a partnership with several different government agencies and having fun doing it. AU has done a great job but, I hope you will stay focused because if you don t all the years of volunteering for these projects and the great work AU has done could be lost. I m an avid fisherman and don t want to see the great fishing in this lake slip away because of politics, so keep up the good work people you really are appreciated! Tackle Tips By Dave Bohl As the weather warms up the Black Bass will begin feeding up shallow in the early morning hour s then retreat to deeper water during the day.

If the water is very calm use smaller sizes and if you have any ripple on the water go to larger sizes. Spinner baits, buzz baits and chatter baits also work well.

On Lake Havasu Largemouth Black Bass are normally found around the tules, weed lines and isolated cover while Smallmouth Black Bass can generally be found around the mouth of coves, rocky shorelines,

Watch for hatching crawfish in rocky areas. If you find them the fishing can be unreal! As the sun rises the bass will descend to deeper water off of points and ledges.

This is a great time to start the day using top water lures such as poppers, super spooks, chug bugs, jerk baits, frogs, toads, mice and similar lures. If the water is very calm use smaller sizes and if you have any ripple on the water go to larger sizes. Spinner baits, buzz baits and chatter baits also work well. Some of my favorites are the Spro rat swimbait and the Booyah chatterbait in white and chartreuse. On Lake Havasu Largemouth Black Bass are normally found around the tules, weed lines and isolated cover while Smallmouth Black Bass can generally be found around the mouth of coves, rocky shorelines, and rocky points extending out from the shore. These are generalizations and catching bass always can vary greatly. Good places to fish are where the bottom changes, weedy/rocky, rocky/sandy, etc. Watch for hatching crawfish in rocky areas. If you find them the fishing can be unreal! As the sun rises the bass will descend to deeper water off of points and ledges. This is a great time to use jigs, cranks baits, swim baits, Texas rigged, drop shotted and shaky head plastics. Keep in mind that as the water warms up the thermo-cline will begin to develop. In Lake Havasu this develops between 18 and 22 feet. The oxygen below this level is very low so the majority of your fish will be found above 20 feet during the summer time. 5 Our deepest sympathy to the family of Robert E. Lee Robert was one of the original members of Anglers United and he will be missed. Robert passed away on Monday May 21st Anglers gave Robert an award honoring him for his dedication and hard work. 5

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this project happen it couldn't have been done without your help.
