1 2009 Special points of interest: Dean Smith commented on Ranger Boats choice of trailer tire. Dean states that he has been getting only a 1000 miles out of their recommended tire before failures occur. He talked to a Ranger representative and found that Goodyear recommends 50 PSI in their Marathon tire, however, Ranger recommends 60 PSI. So if you are having a similar issue, consider this knowledge or experiment with a different tire. Thanks to all for coming. Vice-President s Report Texas BASS Federation Nation will be raffling a Skeeter Bass Boat again this year. The club will benefit from the sale of raffle tickets. Please pick up tickets and buy and/or sell as many as you can. The deadline for money collected (with the ticket stubs) is the January meeting. Kenneth is calling on members of CBC to contribute programs for future meetings. Programs may be presented on any number of subjects. Conservation issues, new technology, etc. Contact Kenneth to be scheduled. The club hats for sale to members for $10. Thanks to all the contributors to the Clean Out Your Tackle Box Raffle. Plenty of items were donated to the raffle, but if you have any new items you don t use and want to give up please bring them to the next meeting. Money from these raffles will buy better items for the November and December meeting raffles. Treasurer s Report Carl Atkins commented on the upcoming payment of yearly dues. Carl prepared and handed out a sheet detailing a number of different payment options based on other affiliation dues. Notably the cost of BASS affiliation has gone up to $50 and is due by December. 2 Page 2 TABC State The 2009 TABC State was held September 26th & 27th on Lake Sam Rayburn. Our club representatives returned home with 8th place plaques. Each participant gave his account of the fishing conditions. Most everyone agreed fishing was decent during practice with overcast sky and cool days but during the tournament days fishing was a bit different. Proof of the tough conditions was shown at the Sunday weigh-in, where only 152 fish were weighed in out of 160 anglers! Highlights for the event were David Immel s Big Bass weighing in at 6.52 pounds and the club move up the ranks from 16 place on Saturday to 8 place on Sunday. Thanks to the Top 8 tournament team for their time and efforts and congratulations on your fine finish. Secretary s Report Nathan reported that lakes governed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) require a Lake Activity Permit for all fishing tournaments. There is currently no cost for the permit. The permit is required to assist the COE with controlling overcrowding of park/lake facilities. Permits are limited and are issued on a First Come First Served basis. The number of permits are regulated through the respective Lake Offices. Each request will be evaluated for potential adverse impact on public safety, park facilities & utility systems, sanitation and natural resources. A minimum of 14 days (30 days in advance is preferred) to 365 days in advance prior to the date of the event. After the clubs outing on Stillhouse Hollow Lake, Nathan was contacted regarding a violation of this requirement; however, after contacting the COE office, he found they had failed to complete the permit process. The COE ranger apologized for any inconvenience. Nonetheless, the COE is serious Member Program Bob Jett gave a program on selecting the proper wheel bearing grease for your boat trailer. He demonstrated how the soap base of the typical bearing grease (or general-purpose greases) allows the emulsification of the grease in the presence of water. This is like when you use dish liquid soap to wash the grease or oil out of a pan with just a little water. Often the typical bearing grease is found labeled as sodium, barium, or calcium-based greases. He recommends using a premium marine grade grease. Texas State Bass Cats David Cosner, President of Texas State University Bass Cats Fishing Team returned to update the club on how the team was doing. The team has competed in a number of different tournaments and won the State on Amistad. The team has been featured on the Versus Channel. Soon the team will travel to compete on the Red River, any tips would be appreciated, contact David at drcosner@gmail.com. He also expressed an interest in getting a fishing tournament/outing mixing team members and club members for the future. David has done a great job getting this program off the ground showcasing the talent of their members in competition. The team was at 12 member this time last year and is now at 32 members. Surprisingly the water was fairly clear even though water was cascading down the ditches and drains into the lake. Although not many fish were weighed in, the smaller fish bit all day. This did not seem to be the case for those who had prefishing experience during the days before. A total of 24 members and one guest fished the tournament. Thanks to all our participants. 4 Page 4 Winning Ways Submitted by John Beene My partner and I pre-fished Stillhouse on the Tuesday before the tournament and found it pretty tough going. In pre-fishing, I had one keeper bass, one catfish and one freshwater drum, while my partner had a couple of non-keeper size bass. On tournament day we were surprised at the number of fish that we caught but finding keepers proved to be pretty difficult. We fished primarily up lake from the boat ramp along rocky shorelines and timber filled pockets. Of my four keepers, one came on a shaky head jig, rigged with 6 watermelon worm fished in about 4 foot of water along a rocky shoreline. The other three keepers were caught on a weighted fluke (watermelon) in the very back of timber filled pockets, probably in 1 to 2 foot of water. Submitted by Bobby Whiteside I fished the dam for the first 2 hours and caught many small bass and 3 keepers on dark colored worms. Then tried the backs of 4 coves and the vegetated flats near the large island and we only caught three small bass. Returned to the dam about noon and caught a few small bass and 1 keeper. Spent the last hour in the back of a cove near the dam and the largemouth bass and white bass were chasing shad in 2-6 ft of water and we caught about 40 fish. I had 2 keepers and lost 2 keepers and Bryan caught 2 keepers and lost one keeper. Bryan caught 9 fish in 10 throws on a rat-l-trap. Transcribed by Nathan Reynolds David stated that this was the wettest he has ever been! He fished with Bob Jett for the day. They caught most of their fish in a cove down by the dam. David caught his keepers on an assortment of spinnerbaits. One particular gray spinnerbait with red eyes was favored by the angler, which he surrendered to the deep. Yet Stan Miller with his patented rattle-trap drag stumbled upon the lost prize and it was eventually returned to its owner. Congratulations to you guys and thanks for sharing. 5 Page 5 ShareLunker Season Begins Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will begin accepting entries into the Toyota ShareLunker program October 1, Toyota became the new program sponsor effective September 1. Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass from Texas waters, public or private, between October 1 and April 30 may submit the fish to the Toyota ShareLunker program by calling program manager David Campbell at (903) or paging him at (888) and leaving a phone number including area code. Fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel within 12 hours. Anglers entering fish into the Toyota ShareLunker program will receive a free replica of their fish, a certificate and ShareLunker clothing and be recognized at a banquet at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens on June 5, In addition, if a Texas angler catches the largest entry of the year, that person will receive a lifetime fishing license. The weigh-in location will be at the Falcon State Park Boat Ramp. hours are 7AM to 4 PM on Saturday and 7AM to 2PM on Sunday. Mike Katzer has started up a Big Bass Pot for Falcon. $10 per day, pays 70% 1st place, 30% 2nd place. Cut off is 9:00 pm on Friday 10/9. On the Texas side of the lake, all species are managed under current statewide regulations. For recreational anglers fishing Mexican waters, a Mexico fishing license is required for everyone in the boat. Mexico boat permits are no longer required. For information on Mexico's fishing regulations, visit the National Aquaculture and Fishing Commission (CONAPESCA) website. Mexico licenses can be purchased in Zapata at Robert's Fish N' Tackle (2425 S. Highway 83, 956/ ) or from Falcon Lake Tackle (2195 S.
