2 Page 2 Canyon Bass Club of San Marcos Elite Series Marshal s Program Jim Stewart participated in the B.A.S.S. Elite Series Marshal s Program on Amistad International Reservoir. He was an onboard spectator with Mark Davis (Day 1) and Mike Iaconelli (Day 2). Jim stated that the program cost $100. he learned a lot by just being on the boat and paying attention to the techniques the pros use (i.e. jig fishing). Bass Brigade The deadline for registering your high school aged youth has been extended for a short time. The youth study biology, lake management, conservation strategies, and stewardship. There are also activities involving photography, journaling, and art. Fishing skills, safety, and ethics are covered. The other major components of the Bass Brigade are life-skills, such as leadership, teambuilding, critical-thinking, and communication. Contact Greg Cummings. Top 6 State Championship The 35th Annual B.A.S.S. Top 6 State Championship was held on Amistad International Reservoir on March 23rd through the 27th. Gary Swenson, Mike Katzer, John Beene, Bobby Whiteside, Milton Thompson, and Donny Collins represented the club. The team finished in 8th Place with lbs. John Beene caught the biggest bass, 7.05 lbs., of our group on Day 2. Each team member gave an account of their tournament experience and general fishing conditions. Overall, a great time was shared by all and the club appreciates the effort put forth by our Top 6. Additionally, congratulations go out to Randy Brudnicki for his individual finish in 10th. Randy fished with the South Regional Team and weighed lbs. His catch was good enough to advance him to the Central Divisional Tournament as a member of a 12 man team. This tournament will be held June 22nd through 26th on Greers Ferry Lake in Heber Springs, AR. Good job to all. Open Tournament John Beene, this years Open Tournament chairman, discussed the upcoming Tournament scheduled for May. If you have sponsors lined up, the list needs to be finalized soon. For the sponsors who were contacted but not sure if they could contribute, member contacts need to push for an commitment. We have several sponsors generously agree to support our tournament; Sac N Pac and Oldham Lures are just a couple. Contact John Beene. Canyon Lake Fish Attractors Project Texas Parks & Wildlife Department District Biologist, Steve Magnelia, sent the Canyon Bass Club a few photos along with his sincere appreciation for participating in the project. Specifically, Carl Atkins, Louis Lowe, Craig Shirley, and Kenneth Dees worked to bundle, load, and place natural structures (brush piles) in strategic locations around the lake. An excel file with the fish attractor location coordinates will be posted on the club s social network site (canyonbassclub.ning.com) soon. If you participated but were not listed here, thank you and please contact Nathan so you can receive credit.

4 Page 4 Winning Ways Poorly Translated by Nathan Reynolds Stan Miller partnered with Bob Bracht. They fished on the west side of the lake most of the time. Stan caught his fish on 1/8 oz. weighted watermelon flukes and a red Yo-zuri Rattl n Vibe Crawtrap, often tossing the fluke at the reeds and just letting it sit in a foot or two of water. He caught fish in the 3 fingers area, an old tank dam, prairie park and oak thicket points. Submitted by Clint Robertson It was actually a really slow day for me. I had seven bites all day, and only caught five fish, but they were good ones (except for one little 2lb dink that I caught at the last minute). Frank Bell and I started out fishing in the trees (one of the coves down by the dam, not sure exactly which one) with no luck, so we ran over to the dam. I had my first bite and first fish down there on a football jig. We hit the discharge to no avail so we went back to some other trees (I promise I m not being vague on purpose I just don t know which coves we were going in since I wasn t looking so I wouldn t loose an eyeball to a raindrop!) where Frank picked up two solid fish on a jig and I caught another one dragging a football jig through the timber (too lazy to tie something else on). We decided to go back to the dam to try again since it seemed that the fish were turning on (everyone in the cove seemed to be catching fish) and I caught my big one (6.71lbs on paper) on a crankbait. No more bites at the dam so we went around to another cove with trees, and I started flipping a senko with an 1/8th bullet weight to the trees and caught my last two fish on that. My two other bites were one pulling off on the senko, and I had one pull off on a paddletail swimbait. Submitted by Carl Atkins I fished with Gary Swenson and we started in the Oak Thicket Ramp Cove on the north side near the back. We had found fish there during pre-fishing, and were hoping the weather had not moved them. We were throwing a lipless crank (Strike King Redeyed shad) painted to look like a tilapia. I had my first fish on about the ninth cast. By the time we finished the strip, I had my limit with a nice 22 kicker, but Gary was still sitting at Zero. We went to our second spot, but it didn t produce any fish, until right at the end when Gary picked up his first fish. Our third spot, near the cold water inlet, let Gary complete his limit plus cull a fish, but I didn t catch a bite. Finally about 1:00, I picked up my 6th fish. We went back to where we started about 2:00, and I picked up two more fish, again Gary could not buy a bite in this area. Bottom line, I could get a bite in Gary s water, and he could not get a bite in my water, even though we were throwing the same thing. Gary and I both had a nice day, it was just my fish were slightly larger. Congratulations to you guys and thanks for sharing. 5 Page 5 April Two-Day Tournament The March Tournament will be held on Amistad International Reservoir. The weighin site is Diablo East at the tube chute pavilion. The date for the tournament has moved from the 2nd weekend to the 3rd weekend (April 18th and 19th) due to the occurrence of Easter. The tournament times are from 7am to 5 pm on Saturday and 7 am to 3 pm on Sun- day The following special boating regulations apply. Any boat with a motor must have a boat pass ($4 per day, $10 for a 3-day pass, or $40 per year) to enter the lake. While a Mexican Boat Permit is no longer required, a Mexican fishing license for each person in the boat is required for boaters across the Mexican boundary. Contact Mike Katzer for the optional Big Bass buy in. He will collect $10 for each day, two places will be paid (70/30 split). Non-Boaters, Back Seat Available! Diablo East David Jordan said that his son will not be fishing with him therefore he has an open his back seat. Artwork courtesy Texas Parks and Wildlife Department 2008 Oct. 1 Apr. 31 If you catch a lunker, call 24-hour at or (903) The club will accept a weigh slip from TPWD s Official Amistad Share- Lunker Holding Station Angler s Lodge 8969 W. US 90 Del Rio, Texas (830) This ruling applies to this month s tournament weigh-in and to this month s Big Bass, if caught during practice. Potentially this ruling will apply to future tournaments where an Official Holding Stations are located. ( pdest/visitorcenters/tffc /sharelunker/holding)
