1 It s All About That BASS PauPac Bass ~ Where competitive angling meets friends, fun, and camaraderie Father and son lead the Pac on Opening Day PauPac Bass kicked off their 2018 season on Father s Day weekend which was also opening day of BASS season. With temperatures dropping into the 60 s overnight, anglers not only had to fight finicky fish but also cooler than normal water temps not to mention, aie temperatures that dropped from the 80 s during the day to the 60 s over night. This year, Matt Brunza, Len Brunza s youngest son - was able to give his dad a truly special father s day gift, as the father and son team lead the Pac on opening day and weighed in a first place bag weighing over twelve pounds. Several years ago Len fished with his oldest son Lenny where they did quite well together as a team. Time to train the next generation stated Len and it appears dad is doing quite a tremendous job. Happy Father s Day, Dad! Coming in on the heels of Len and Matt were long time fishing partners, Michael Marsala and Albert Arnette with a nice bag of fish weighing just under twelve pounds and included a very nice [almost] three and a half pound kicker! Saturday night as boats pulled into the launch parking area, you could feel the kinship between the anglers but you could also feel the competitiveness. This day had finally arrived after the long winter hiatus. Anglers were in anxious anticipation and eager to launch their boats and get underway but that didn t put any hindrance on the kidding, prodding, and poking fun between the anglers. This is a great group of guys, stated Rob Rosencrans. We all get along great and we have a lot of fun fishing together! 2 Page 2 It s All About That BASS Editorial: It s all in the eyes of the beholder.. The weather has warmed up, spring foliage is in bloom, and you re ready to go out and catch that monster bronzeback, you re next step - head to your local sporting or angling store in search of the perfect artificial bait. But with such a colossal selection to choose from, what do you get? First and foremost, know your waterways. Bass spawning takes place at different times of the year depending on the regions your fishing. Where areas like Florida are at the end of the spawning season, here in Northeast Pennsylvania, it s just beginning and this fact is going to determine what food sources the fish are looking for. Although voraciously carnivorous in nature, if your presentation is wrong those bass aren t going to give your bait a second look. Add to the presentation conundrum, bedding fish can be suspended and it s going to be your mission to find out what is required to trigger that big bite. Here is where it gets fiddly! Finding the right bait, without getting yourself caught up in the - Oh that s pretty, syndrome. Remember, you aren t the one looking at that bait as your next meal! Pretty packaging only goes so far once that bait is in the water, that pretty bait may not look so appetizing to those fish. When searching out that perfect bait keep several things in mind; the waterways you re fishing, the condition of the water, the time of year, weather patterns, and most importantly foliage and natural food sources. If you re lucky (as we were on one of our outings on the north branch of the Susquehanna, a craw will be sitting on the boat launch ready to give himself up to you affording you a splendid opportunity to get a close look at what those bass are feasting on. Now armed with this knowledge, simply match your bait to what you see. Another key factor to keep in mind is you can never have too much bait or for that matter, too many dissimilar colors of bait. This is the time of year when those fish are fastidious and can be everything from aggressive (and attacking everything that moves) to suspended (and not wanting to be bothered) to every other mottled mood in between. Don t get discouraged, bear in mind that you can throw out a wacky rigged Senko under one dock and not even get so much as a nibble, and then do nothing more than move 20 yards up (or down) the bank and get slammed. Also, don t be afraid to change up your bait (and even the color of your bait) because it may just take a spinner bait, crank bait, spoon, or shaky head rig to trigger them - but a finesse bait to actu- ally put them in the boat. We ve witnessed this first-hand where a rod rigged with a crank bait didn t get a hit, but the rod rigged with a tube put them in the boat as fast as the bait hit the water. Keeping a diverse arsenal of bait in your rod lockers will help reveal what those persnickety springtime bronzeback s are looking for. This is the time of year when those fish are fastidious and can be everything from aggressive (and attacking everything that moves) to suspended (and not wanting to be bothered) to every other mottled mood in between. 3 Page 3 PauPac Bass heads into season marks the second season for PauPac Bass. The fishing club comprised of anglers from all over Pennsylvania meet up at the Lake Wallenpaupac launch for thirteen weeks of bass tournament fun and excitement. The club was created last year out of the pure love of the sport and the desire to create a club where the enjoyment of the sport could be truly appreciated and shared. Between June 16th and July 20th, members will launch at 10:00 pm on Friday night and weigh in at 6:00 am on Saturday morning, Between July 27th and September 15th, members will launch on Saturday nights at 10:00 pm and weigh-in at 6:00 am. Tournaments are $90.00 per team with a 5 fish bag limit. Fish species are Small and Largemouth bass only and fish must be a minimum of 12 inches. Participants are only allowed to use artificial lures [no live bait]. You can save your beat up bait and reuse it. Bass will ambush prey if they think its wounded and a beat up bait will look like injured prey Adding a bit of red to your bait whether the head of a spinner bait, red hooks, or dipping a tail can entice a strike because the bass will think its injured. Keep an eye on your livewell water. Bass will spit up and this will tell you what they re feeding on Change up your baits and even make them seasonal to match what the bass are feeding on at specific times of the year. Bass are ornery. Don t be afraid to tap at that line in order to bug the fish. Change it up Change it often Watch the signs Think outside the box Also don t forget, fishing before a storm makes the fish more active! 4 Page 4 In the hot seat: Pay No Attention To That Man Behind the Gambler In our hot seat this month is one of our ever loved and all time favorite anglers who we just love to pick on but believe me, he loves to dish it right back! No, it s not our illustrious leader that is the feature of this article. And no, its not a wizard behind a curtain either. But if you see Vince, you will very likely see this guy not far behind. We should really be checking his live-well more thoroughly but not for fish, instead we should be looking for an installed and well hidden magnifying glass because every week he seems to have an 18 pound bag of fish hiding in there somewhere. Now we have yet to see these monster fish though he remains insistent that he has them and our little buddy assures us that they really are right there in his live-well. I m sure we ve all heard his famous line, If you don t have 18 pounds, you might as well just put your boat back on the trailer And we take notice that he tends to wait till all the fish are weighed-in before brining up his bag.. Hanging on to that suspense till the last minute. This really makes us wonder. Is there some magical magnifying glass and is this magical magnifying glass something like Harry Potter s vanishing cloak? But instead of things disappearing, they grow larger? Safe Boating + Safe Anglers = Happy Tournament As we bring to a close our first month of PaupacBass tournaments, we would like to take a moment to remind everyone of a few very important do s and don t during our tournaments. DO s 1/2 hour before dark and 1/2 hour after safe light speed limit is 25 mph PFD s must be worn whenever your motor is running Maintain no less than 25 yards between boats DON Ts (immediate disqualification) NEVER turn off your navigation lights after dark immediate DQ Speeding! Believe us, we can see you and will DQ you. More than 5 fish in your live-well is immediate DQ One last note on safety. Be extremely careful after dark for non-tournament boaters who are running around without any lights on. Stay alert ~ Stay Safe A little boating etiquette will go a long way Have a fun & safe holiday
