Crossroads Anglers FLYFISHING CLUB SINCE 1994 Meeting Date: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 6:30 p.m. From the President Finally, some nice weather and reports that the stripers are showing up.

I was able to get some throwback steelhead and some trout, even though the weather was cool, I was able to enjoy the fishing.

We are calling this brush up on your casting and both, Bill and Sheila will be there to correct your faults in casting. Of course, Kevin and Ben will be cooking up a storm of food so come hungry.

1 Crossroads Anglers FLYFISHING CLUB SINCE 1994 Meeting Date: Tuesday, May 27, :30 p.m. From the President Finally, some nice weather and reports that the stripers are showing up. I just came back from a business trip (with some fishing thrown in) in upstart New York. I was able to get some throwback steelhead and some trout, even though the weather was cool, I was able to enjoy the fishing. As I hope everyone is aware this month s meeting is going to be at Whitings Pond in Attleboro. We are having Bill and Sheila Hassan. We are calling this brush up on your casting and both, Bill and Sheila will be there to correct your faults in casting. Of course, Kevin and Ben will be cooking up a storm of food so come hungry. I ve been told that the pond is stocked with trout so make sure you come with rod and reels with flies. This is the last meeting of the season and will resume our meeting in Foxboro in September. Keep looking at the web site as we will be having trips and will post them on the message board as well as other information thru the summer. I want to wish all a good summer and be safe to everyone who is on the water. Bill and Sheila Hassan are International Federation of Fly Fishers Master certified casting instructors and are among a handful of couples who both hold this rating. They have traveled extensively for fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. They serve on the TFO rods and Hatch Reels Pro Staff and teach casting seminars and private lessons throughout New England. Sheila is the director at the Wulff School of Fly Fishing and is an IGFA world record holder for bonefish and bluefish. She has published her first book: Fly Casting: A Systematic Approach. This time we venture into the soft and fluffy world of Marabou feathers with some invaluable tips on getting the most from this lively and versatile material. There are basically two ways to tie in marabou for wings and tails. I will show you both ways. I have shown them for tails, but the process is exactly the same for tying in wings. 3 the Quigley Cripple by Marc Fauvet photo and video by Hans Weilenmann Here s an ingenious pattern designed by the late Bob Quigley. It s a half-in half out-out imitation of a crippled mayfly dun trapped in the surface with it s two halves definitely secured in their position on the water s surface due to each part s respective materials. Tail and abdomen are made of the same marabou feather, soaking up water and as such, the tail will wiggle freely with the current further enhancing the struggling aspect of the trapped mayfly. On the front end we have two high floating materials: cock hackle and deer hair. The hackle will vibrate slightly with the current and once again give this imitation a strong impression of life. This fly has served me well throughout the years although I prefer the Tiemco 200R or Hayabusa Living Larva hooks of the same form. I haven t tried the Umpqua U204 but it s open gape doesn t install confidence, specially with a crushed barb. A little tip for fishing it is to wet the tail/abdomen feather with water before the first cast so it settles underwater right away. Also, depending on the current s speed I ll apply floatant differently. With fast water the whole hackle/hair part gets a good amount of floatant, on calmer waters just the top and I ll rub the lower hackle with water or even a little tippet degreaser to help sink the legs. As always, tie them up in different sizes and colors to match what s coming off where you re fishing. Another great tutorial from Hans I hope you ll enjoy! Click on url below.
