1 VOLUME 53 OCTOBER 2018 NUMBER 07 MAY MEETING Thursday, October 18, Farmhouse Rest Wet Fly / Social Gathering: Dinner / General Meeting: 6:00PM 7:00PM President s Message: By: Tim Cooley It was great to see everyone after the summer break. I really enjoyed our presenter talking of the lakes on the eastern side of the Cascades. It is great to know we have a dedicated and motivated Government servant that care about the lakes. With all the noise of everyday life from radio, TV and newspapers, it was wonderful to just talk about our fishing adventures and trips that we had over the summer. Keep those stories coming I really enjoy them. Plus it makes Graham read ask what fly you used so don t forget that part of your story. For November, make sure that you get your presentations ready for Members presentations. Submit your presentations or let Bill Keeler know that you want to present as soon as you can, so that we can arrange what systems we need to use for the presentation. See you at the meeting, time for another great joke.
2 This Months Presentation: By: Bill Keeler Scott Willison is the owner of the Confluence Fly Shop. He s been fly fishing for over 30 years throughout his home state of Washington, and has also fished in the Bahamas, France, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Wisconsin, British Columbia, Costa Rica and Mexico. Scott has an English Writing and Teaching degree from WWU, has taught in public schools and worked as an educator for the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association. Scott also guided fly fishing on area rivers and beaches prior to his days in the shop. He serves as a Native Fish Society River Steward for the NF Stilliguamish River and is an active member of the Fourth Corner Fly Club. Sometimes he has a beard, sometimes he doesn t. His presentation will be on Fly Fishing the Lower B.C. 3 Introduction to Fly Fishing, Skagit Valley College: By: Bruce Freet After our FFF Board approval and Skagit Valley College interest, our Club will teach the Introduction to Fly Fishing again during the winter quarter of 2019 as part of their Community Education program. Registration will begin the first week of November, and judging from past years, the course will probably fill with 16 students before the end of the month. The course begins on January 9 th and ends on March 20 th ; every Wednesday night from 6:30 to 9:00 pm, plus some optional Saturday sessions for a total of more than 35 hours of instruction. This is about a week later this year because of the manner in which the dates and Wednesdays fall. The cost is $125 per student. The fly fishing topics include: Matching Rods, Reels, and Fly Lines; Casting; Selecting Leaders, Knots, and Tippets; Learning about Trout Foods; Tying Flies; Trout Habitats in Streams, Stillwaters, and Saltwater; Strategies and Methods; and Accessory Equipment and Safety. Our Club provides everything that the student needs for learning from rods, reels, and fly lines to fly tying vises and materials. Thanks to Gary Falkner again, fish catching practice with instructors coaching will occur at his pond on the last Saturday of the course. The College and Club share the revenue 50/50, and our Club disperses its money as stipends to the instructors to off-set their expenses and for replenishing materials. As a result, the course pays for itself and doesn t cost our Club anything from our annual budget. This will be the 13 th year that our Club has taught this course. Most of our instructors and assistants are returning, but we could use help in casting, fly tying, and fishing stillwaters. If you are interested and would like to get involved, please contact me. New Member: By: John Freeman At the September meeting the general meeting three new members were inducted. Toni Miller was sponsored by Cathy Schaeffer, Brandon Miller was sponsored by Bruce Freet Jim Clark was sponsored by Ryan Johnson. Here is brief introduction of the new members as provided by their sponsors or the member. Toni Miller I met Toni at the S.V.C. Fly-Fishing class last year. She and her husband, Brandon, had become interested in learning about fly fishing after many years of gear fishing. Toni is a busy Real Estate agent and a new grandma. She enjoys camping and spending time with her family. She is a good fly fisher already, she caught 3 big trout on the class outing! Cathy Schaeffer Jim Clark I started fly fishing when I was ten years old on rivers in California and Oregon. I did so until I joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, Upon my transfer to Whidbey Island, I took up the sport again and have continued to fish during my employment with Island County Public Works. Now that I am retired, I joined the Fidalgo Fly Fishers (FFF) to learn more about fly fishing and fly tying. As a FFF
4 member, I hope to provide input on local fisheries and find opportunities to fish with others and learn from them as well. I am a previous member of the Whidbey Island Fly Fishing Club and look forward to my time with the Fidalgo Fly Fishers. Jim Clark Brandon Miller I first met Brandon Miller with his wife, Toni, at last year's Introduction to Fly Fishing course, and it was an honor to sponsor them for Club membership. Brandon had previous fly-fishing experience and wished to take the course with his wife as well as gain a more thorough knowledge of fly fishing. He accomplished both and has become an avid angler. Brandon is a generous person and loves to laugh, and joke with you. I have no doubt that if he wishes, Brandon can make a major contribution to our Club in the future. I encourage members to meet Brandon and Toni, and go fishing with them. Bruce Freet Three new members were inducted into the Club at the September meeting. Left to right: Ryan Johnson, sponsor of New Member Jim Clark; Cathy Schaeffer, sponsor of New Member Toni Miller; New Member Brandon Miller with sponsor Bruce Freet. Up Coming Events: Note: Please check the Outings and Event page on the web site, things get added from time to time. October: Oct. 9 th thru 13 th Grande Ronde Contact Richard Raisler Oct. General Meeting will be the 18 th Speaker will be Scott Willison talking about Fishing the Lower BC Mainland.
5 Fidalgo Fly Fishers Grants Committee: By: Dennis Wilson The Fidalgo Fly Fishers Grants Committee is hereby established to provide grants which support the Aims and Purposes of the Fidalgo Fly Fishers (the Club), as defined in the By-Laws. Grants may be given to groups which support conservation, education, or rehabilitation through programs and activities related to fly fishing. Grants are funded each year by one-half of the Club s annual Christmas party raffle and auction proceeds, not to exceed $1,250. Though there are no restrictions as to the number of grants awarded, the monetary amount per grant, or the location of the grant recipient, it should be the goal of the Club to concentrate grants on activities within Washington State and Skagit and neighboring counties, which support the types of activities enjoyed by Club members; that is, fly fishing for trout, salmon, or steelhead in local rivers, streams, lakes, and estuaries. The Committee will consist of a Chairperson appointed by the Board and at least two other Club members. A call for grant submissions will appear in the January Wahoo. Grant requests should be submitted to the Committee Chairperson via with cc to all Board members no later than the Monday before the February Board meeting. The request should indicate the name and address of the proposed recipient and a brief statement explaining how the recipient supports the Aims and Purposes of the Club. The Committee Chairperson, after consulting with Committee members, will present the members requests as well as other grant recommendations to the Board at the February Board meeting. The Board will present the results of their deliberations to the membership at the February general meeting for approval and for inclusion in the annual budget.
