2 President s Message From Jerry Searcy In 1984 a friend asked me to join him on a fishing trip to Idaho. Having no idea about the area, but being an avid spin fisherman, I thought why not and said let s go. Shortly thereafter he began to share with me the gear I would be taking along, which included things like a fly rod, waders, tippet, etc. There was no mention of bringing along my spinning rod, or Power Bait. Not being familiar with any of the stuff he said I would need, it became obvious I was in for a sharp learning curve. Fortunately, I had him as a resource to get me going in the right direction. Not being one who would back out on a friend, I decided to roll with it. It turned out to be the best fishing decision I ever made. It introduced me to fly fishing and has brought me back to Yellowstone Country and surrounding waters nearly every summer for over thirty years. Like most of us who experience fly fishing for the first time, it was anything but easy. Just figuring out how to put on all the clothing was new and a bit puzzling, but again with my friend s help, I was able to make it happen. My first stream to cast a fly line into was the Henry s Fork of the Snake River near its source in Idaho near Yellowstone National Park. You might correctly assume that I didn t catch a thing other than a bunch of wind knots. I was probably thinking at the time who said this was fun, but at least I was able to enjoy the peace, beauty and serenity of the mountain environment. It soon became clear, however, that it is possible to catch fish this way, as my friend was consistently reeling in some of the largest trout I had ever seen Continue President s Newsletter on page Board of Directors President: 1st Vice President: 2nd Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Newsletter: Trout in the Classroom: Conservation: Membership: Jerry Searcy president@deepcreekflyfishers.org Clark Stevens Mike Giusti Jill Wagner secretary@deepcreekflyfishers.org George Plescher treasurer@deepcreekflyfishers.org Roberta Ross newsletter@deepcreekflyfishers.org Doug Spieske tic@deepcreekflyfishers.org conservtion@deepcreekflyfishers.org Mike Stuhl membership@deepcreekflyfishers.org Education: Outings: Opportunity: Drawing Web Master: Club Store: First Past President: Second Past President: Carl Wuebben education@deepcreekflyfishers.org Mike Telles outings@deepcreekflyfishers.org Mike Butler opportunity@deepcreekflyfishers.org Greg LaPolla webmaster@deepcreekflyfishers.org Sean Robbins clubstore@deepcreekflyfishers.org Bill Reeves pastpresident@deepcreekflyfishers.org Ken Rhodes pastpastpresident@deepcreekflyfishers.org SWCIFFF Greg LaPolla Representative: swciff@deepcreekflyfishers.org 2

3 Continued President s Newsletter caught. After several attempts with no success, I finally managed to catch my first trout on a fly line. From that point on, I was hooked and have since enjoyed every minute on a stream. Over the years I have come to love the country in and around Yellowstone National Park. With each trip there has come a growing awareness of the majesty of Yellowstone. From the large trout, incredible elk, bison, eagles, and bears to its overall natural beauty it is a site to behold. There is so much to appreciate about Yellowstone and the surrounding area that it s impossible to describe it in words. I must say, if you ever have the chance, take the time to make Yellowstone a part of your fishing experience. You will always treasure the time you spend there, and may well find yourself, as I have, returning year after year. I ll be leaving for this year s adventure in paradise around July 18th. Hope to see you on the stream! 2018 Meetings & Speakers Meetings are held 7:00pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month, except February 21 (3rd Wednesday), May 30 (5th Wednesday), November (2rd Wednesday), and December (Holiday Banquet), in the Izaak Walton Clubhouse, 2601 Dexter Drive, inside Fairmount Park, Riverside, CA February 21 Seth Blackamore March 28 Rod Cesario April 25- to be announced May 30 to be announced June 27 White elephant/club dinner July 25 to be announced HELP SUPPORT OUR CLUB CHECK IT OUT OPPORTUNITY DRAWING Win some great fishing items Wear the Logo Deep Creek Fly Fishers Club Store All items available at the monthly meetings. 5 Trout in the Classroom DCFF HOT DOG SALES On January 19, TIC Volunteers and CA Department of Fish and Wildlife employees delivered rainbow trout eggs to 35 classrooms filled with excited school children. During the following 5-6 weeks, the students watch the eggs hatch into alevin, then into fry, and then feed the little fish and watched them grow. In March it will be time for the students to release their fish into local waters. This release day is often called the best field trip of the year, and gives the students an opportunity to introduce their fish, and themselves to a more natural environment. This release is where our TIC volunteers play a major part by sharing their knowledge of fish and fishing in that environment. This is the largest number of classes that we have had at one cycle, and we could use a little help. Volunteers Needed Come join us in the fun. Call Doug Spieske (909) or Jerry Searcy (818) Deep Creek Fly Fishers have the privilege of selling hot dogs at Bass Pro during their Fishing Weekends. This event has become a major fund raiser for the club which helps to pay for speakers thought out the year, educational supplies for the club and donations to organizations related to fly fishing and conservation of our waterways. These events require several volunteers to make it successful. Please consider signing up to help on the following weekend Saturday March 3 and Sunday March 4 Contact Mike Giusti if you can help 5

6 Fly Tying Nights 2018 March 8th Second Thursday of each Month Come join us for Fly Tying Night at the clubhouse. We will meet on March 8th at 7pm. If you are new to fly tying come to the Fly Tying Night it will be good practice. Bring your favorite beverage and some fly tying materials for whatever fly you want to tie. If you have any questions about materials we can help. We will be at the clubhouse tying to fill our fly boxes up. You can even tie that fluorescence red and purple fly you always have wanted to tie but never had the nerve to tie! Yes, we have a fun time razzing each other about everything from what fly you use on what water and if your caddis imitation looks like a mayfly imitation instead of a caddis. But, it is all in fun and everyone laughs a lot with the jokes flying fast. We keep it light hearted and enjoy each other s company as well as meet members of the club. Join in on the on-going discussion of How important it is to Match the Hatch with a gazillion flies or just having 10 different flies to fill your fly box or Do you have to have that exact material in the recipe or can you substitute something else? Local Fly Fishing Trips 2018 We currently have 9 members sign up for those interested in local float tube fishing at Lake Perris, possible surf fishing trips and other local venues. 7 ANOREXIC ZEBRA By Aaron Jasper Translated by CARL WUEBBEN FLY OF THE MONTH This fly is perfect for a dry fly dropper style of fishing. Attach a large dry fly to the end of your leader, tie another length of tippet to the hook bend of the floating fly, then add an anorexic zebra or a nymph. Streams with high angling pressure are generally well suited for a dry dropper technique. In many of these streams, the trout are very wary of people. Because of these factors successful anglers present fly s from a distance. Suspending your fly under dry flies is the best way to do this and not spook the fish. When fishing with the correct leader system, dry flies and small flies or nymphs can increase your catch rates even under some surprisingly tough conditions. Dry dropper combinations works especially well during mayfly and caddisfly hatches. Many nymphs and pupae are vulnerable near the surface, and trout frequently feed right under the surface. Also try tying the second fly to the eye of the dry fly for less drag and better floatation of the dry. 9 2018 Steelhead Trip on the Trinity River Last year we had to reschedule the steelhead trip when the guides called us to tell us it had rained for ten days solid and going to rain for another four days. The Trinity River was running like chocolate milk. After last year we thought we would move the trip up to January so if we had to reschedule we would be able to have two months to do that. We left on January 11th for five days of steelhead fishing. It is a ten and a half-hour drive. We always stop off in Redding at The Fly Shop to pick up last minute things and get the latest fishing report. They told us that plenty of steelhead moved up in the river. The steelhead count this year was over 600,000 fish. I had been watching the websites for the Trinity Fly Shop, Confluence Outfitters, and The Fly Shop. There was a lot of steelhead caught this year with multiple fish caught. got three to the boat. I didn t even get a take down. At the end of the day Dave was talking to me and shaking his head saying, You had perfect drifts I don t get it. I laughed and told him the fish were sexist, they only wanted female fishermen. Wally Meyers We all used a guide at least one day and some had two days of guiding. This year EVERYONE hooked a fish, not everyone got the fish to the net. I think there was a lot of hooked steelhead that were lost before getting netted. Robin Johnson Expectations were high as everyone arrived and we went out to dinner on Thursday night. Robin and I had a guide this year that she had used in the past years. We met him at 7:30 am and launched at the Indian Creek Boat Ramp. Another guide wanted to launch so we went down a couple of bends to rig up. All the guides like to use their own leaders. Dave, our guide anchored and rigged Robin up first. Then he had her fish while he rigged me up. As he was doing this, Robin hooked up. We were all thinking this is going to be a good day with a hooked fish in the first hour. By the end of the day Robin had hooked five fish and John Holcomb 9

10 2018 Steelhead Trip on the Trinity River continued Steve Castles Steve Castles hooked two from the shore while wade fishing. The second fish got off the hook at his feet before they could net it. Joe Perkins hooked one while using his switch rod and lost it before he could get it into the net. Bob Williams caught the biggest steelhead he has ever caught and yes his grin was as big as the steelhead. Gary Applebee I fished every day without a take down. On Monday Steve and I went out to fish the water above the Douglas City Bridge. Neither of us had a hit. We changed locations to the Douglas City Campground and hiked upstream to a piece of water we fished the day before. About 2:00 in the afternoon I was fishing a run with long drifts without success. I thought well heck I m going to feed out another 25 feet of line. On the second drift at the end I stopped the drift and twitched it. Finally I had a steelhead on. As I was bringing him it started raining, like someone opened up the heavens. It rained so hard Steve couldn t see the fish because of the raindrops. But we got him in the net and a photo taken. Bob Williams Jerry Milhd 10
