1 Youth Anglers of Ohio Ohio Chapter The Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock Dear Friend of the Youth Anglers of Ohio (OBJC), Enclosed is the application for this year s spring campfire, May 25-27, 2018 at Canter s Cave; see the enclosed map for directions. Registration will begin Friday afternoon at 2:00pm with the program starting at 8:00pm. If you plan to be there early, please bring a covered dish for a potluck dinner and make or reacquaint yourself with some good friends. The fee for camp is detailed on the next page and covers meals, lodging, and class supplies. If you have special dietary needs, please submit your specific requirements with the application. Note also No Fishing on the pond before 3pm on Friday No adults fishing on the pond (early mornings included) until Sunday unless you are actively helping a youth to fish hand your rod to them to let them land it. All members are to be off the property by 12 Noon on Sunday. PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATIONS WITH PAYMENT MAY 10 th. Who are we? Our club was organized in the State of Maryland in 1940 with the purpose of passing on awareness and an appreciation of nature s bounty and teaching the ideals of Conservation, Sportsmanship, and Angling skills. The Ohio chapter was formed in 1947, with our first campfire weekend in Additional chapters can be found in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York. We have two events per year. The first is our campfire weekend and the second is a fall weekend. What is our purpose? In 1940, a few forward-thinking men formed this organization to help promote and teach young anglers about fishing with an emphasis on fly-fishing. The name Jungle Cock was used because it is from this bird that the feathers are used to make a particular fly that is used in fly-fishing. Our mission is to pass on the knowledge and love of fishing and the stewardship of our natural resources to those who will come after us the youth of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. What is the Campfire Weekend? Our Campfire Weekend will be over Memorial Day weekend at Canter s Cave 4-H camp, approximately 6 miles north of Jackson, Ohio. Youths progress through a six-year program that teaches the basics of fishing, conservation and preservation. They will build upon their skills year to year, and finish the program by building their own filet knife, landing net, and / or fishing rod. The culmination of their instruction is the opportunity to spend the day fishing with a Master Fisherman offsite. How old must a youth be to attend? To start the program, they must be between the ages of 7 to 17 years old. Younger siblings can tag-along for the weekend as long as they are at least 6 years of age.

2 Partners the Ohio Division of Wild life How much does it cost? Due to a generous donation, this year the cost will be subsidized for ALL our youth attending camp. The cost of the campfire weekend is $20 per youth, and $70 per adult which includes annual membership. Your camp fees cover four meals, lodging for two nights, and basic class supplies; however, 4 th and 5 th year students working on a project require an additional fee detailed in the application. What do I get for my fee? We sleep in a facility designed for 4-H campers with five bunk beds in each room. The facility is segregated with men on one side and women on the other. Each half of the building has a bathroom with showers. Three hot meals are provided Saturday and a hot breakfast is provided Sunday morning. Friday night is started with a potluck dinner while campers are registering, and finishes with hands-on classes taught by knowledgeable instructors covering everything from tying your line to a hook, rigging and using live bait, building your own spinners and jigs, to stream-bed entomology. Sponsors attend class right along with their youth. Saturday is filled with more instruction in techniques such as fly tying, fly fishing, stream waterquality surveys, fish identification and cleaning, and plenty of open fishing time. We stock the pond with 100 s of large rainbow trout for your youth to catch, and we will even teach them how to prepare the fish to take home to cook and eat later. Our campfire that night culminates a fantastic weekend and gives all the youth attending a multitude of fishing gear and information they will be able to use their whole lives. The most valuable gift, however, is the memories you will create with the youth you have brought for the weekend. Sunday after breakfast you may fish until noon, if you wish, and then you can head home to enjoy the remainder of the Memorial Day weekend. What do I need to bring? sleeping gear hat clothes to stay warm and dry insect repellent sun glasses extra shoes and socks camera pocket knife flashlight with new batteries toilet articles sun screen fishing gear (we have gear if you don t) shower shoes rain gear bath towels and washcloths Recommended fishing gear: split shot weights, hooks, slip bobbers, and rooster tail spinning lures. Third year students will be wading in the creek, so bring an old pair of shoes or waders! Bring pocket money to purchase the latest in Jungle Cock garb including t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and pins. We also have a cash raffle for prizes after lunch and dinner Saturday. Remember: Canter s Cave DOES NOT ALLOW ALCOHOL, DRUGS, PETS, WEAPONS, OR CAMPING ANYWHERE ON THE PROPERTY! How do I sign up? Follow the instructions on the application, total all of the fees due, and mail in your application by May 10 th! 3 Application Instructions Fill out the Campfire Registration Data form. The section titled Adult (Sponsor) Name is for the adult who will be responsible for the youth(s) attending the campfire weekend. For each youth or adult attending the campfire, fill out the appropriate registration information. Every youth must complete our program in sequence. If this is their first year attending, circle 1 st. The youth must be 7 years old or older to start the program. If they are between the ages of 6 they can attend as a Tag-along and they will attend classes with the older children but will not receive credit. 4 th and 5 th year students must complete a project and may not duplicate a prior year s project. 6 th year students will be Fishing with the Masters. The bottom of the application is reserved for those students in the 4 th and 5 th year of their instruction. Write their name next to the activity project they wish to complete this year (Knife, Net, or Rod). An additional fee is required with each selection. If choosing the knife project, the youth must be at least 12 years old (power tools are used). Note also that the knife project actually starts Saturday morning so knife builders will have a new mini-project this year to be completed Friday evening the fishing necklace. Please have the medical authorization form completed by the guardian or parent for each youth attending our camp. Also this year we are requesting copies of medical cards for each youth in case emergency treatment is necessary. Total Up all Fees: $20 for each youth and $70 for each adult attending the campfire weekend and any additional fees for the 4 th and 5 th year students. Take Route 35E in Chillicothe towards Jackson. After about 22 miles on Route 35E you will come to a green and white highway sign indicating Canter s Cave 4H Camp 1 mile, and also an OBJC sign shaped like a fish. Immediately turn LEFT onto Township Road #223 (Caves Road). Follow this road for approximately 1 mile. Turn LEFT onto gravel drive and follow it to the dining hall located at end of gravel drive for registration.
