The weather this year was Fantastic for our 38 youth and 12 Junior Leaders at camp. Like last year we were extremely fortunate to get a substantial grant from the Ohio Division of Wildlife. With this grant, we were able to give the youth a great camp experience that is hard to beat. When it s all winding down Saturday evening, there is nothing like having the campfire in the great outdoors and seeing all the kid s faces when they get their prizes. It is also nice to see young anglers taking home some nice fish to enjoy with their family. I must say, my 2-year presidency was definitely a fun and memorable experience, but it was more challenging than I d expected. What makes it all possible, however, is the tremendous support of the officers and members of this great organization, particularly the past presidents. These guys are just dynamite - Tom Bergman, Ken Adkins, Mike Hall, Roy Naeder, and Tony Dabo. As presidents we each bring our own At the 2013 OBJC Spring Campfire, we had the Biggest Fish Award for six program groups. The recipients received a plaque to remember their catch. I am blessed to follow a couple guys with outstanding organizational skills, so knowing what to do when was never a problem - just look up how it was done last time and do that! For my 2 years I am most thankful that we finally secured an OBJC trailer to keep all of our supplies in. This should cut down on the critters that would invade our boxes back in the Canter s Cave pump house, as well as keeping the supplies more close at hand for the instructors and officers to check on and add to. Always keep in mind that we re here to build the bridge for the next generation. It truly is not about us it is about them. We continue to recruit new members to join our organization. We use business cards that have our website listed, and work to give a personal invite to prospective members. If we want to continue growing, attracting new members, and most importantly pass on our love of angling to future generations, we have to work at promoting our organiza on. So talk Biggest Fish Awards to people you meet about our organiza on and get them interested. The Ohio chapter has a web site up and running that has our newsle ers and details about our organiza on. 2 Campfire News This year we had a good class of eleven new young anglers. The first year Spincasters spent time learning to tie knots, rig bobbers, attach sinkers, rig rubber worms, and use live bait. Basic first-aid is also covered, just in case. Spincasters 1st Year Program baits so they could see each lure s action in water. The real fun, though, was fishing for trout in the pond, conducting stream sampling, and tasting some yummy fresh cooked fish! Spinners 2nd Year Program Our class of eleven second year anglers continued to build upon the knowledge they gained in their first year, including the use of rubber worms and live bait, and the honed their spincasting skills. This year we gave the Spinners more time to spend building their own spinners and jigs under the direction of our expert instructors Candy and Ron Horton. A highlight for these kids was studying stream bed entomology with Mike Hall. Nothing beats traipsing around a creek looking for cool bugs and other live critters! They learned how counting insects helps you know the health of the stream. Over at the camp pool the kids spent time working surface lures, crank baits, spinner baits, and jig Flycasters 3nd Year Program Our class of six third year anglers had a great year. On Friday night, they spent time learning to tie flies under the expert eye of Tony Dabo. Each student was able to tie several flies and was then able to try them out the next day. On Saturday, after breakfast we headed to Camp Logan just down to road to learn fly casting. Tony and a couple of our wonderful Junior Leaders did a great job teaching the young anglers and even the adults spending the day with their kids learned a few new tricks. We used targets to create a fly fishing competition among all the young people. It was a beautiful day at Logan and I m glad to have had the opportunity to use their facility again Thanks Cliff! The CREED Award Recipients This year we had multiple Creed Awards going to CJ Dabo, Marisa Dabo, and Sarah Henderson. The Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock was formed so that anglers could pass on their love of angling and the outdoors to future generations. For years, CJ has been working with his dad, Tony, to teach the 3rd years how to Fly Fish, and Marisa and Sarah have provided expert assistance. An OBJC first! The 20-year Award. This year we had a special recognition for Will Adkins, son of Ken and Darla Adkins. The Adkins clan work tirelessly every year to make sure camp is a success, and sons Will, Ben, and friend Jeremy help out in numerous ways but most notably by running the Casting Kids competition. Shining the spotlight on Will in a special way this year was well-deserved in acknowledgement of his involvement with camp every year for 20 straight years! Page 2 Will started as the Ohio Chapter s first tagalong back in 1994 and hasn t missed a camp since, despite having his own family commitments and his career in the military. Will, you are an inspiration to us all!

3 Junior Anglers Rod, Net, & Knife Building 4th/5th Year This year we had NINE young anglers working on projects. We had one rod builder, and Scott Furst expertly guided him through the entire process until he had a beautiful new onepiece graphite fishing rod to take out on his next fishing trip. Two young anglers worked on nets this year and they turned out very nice and colorful under the watchful eye of Roy Naeder. If you ve never seen Roy work on a net, you re missing a true artist in action. This is a wonderful skill to pass along to the next generation of anglers. Our six knife builders got to use power-tools with the multitalented Ron Horton giving instruction. This involves a grinder to shape the metal, a saw to cut the shape of the handle, rivets to hold it together, and a sharpener to give it a good edge. The project wraps up with the assembly of the sheath. Fishing with the Masters 6th Year & Graduates On Friday evening the one angler participating in her final year fishing with the masters reviewed the information she needed to be successful on the trip to a private pond. She reviewed knots, different lures, how to retrieve different lures, and canoe safety. The sole participant was Sarah Powell, daughter of Master fisherman Dan Powell. They got on the water early Saturday and had a great day putting to use all the skills learned during her years of formation, not to mention all the other trips with dad! Sarah has now successfully completed the requirements to graduate from the Ohio Brotherhood of the Junglecock. We hope she will come back to be a junior leader next year. Sarah Powell New this year - fishing necklaces! This year we introduced a new project to fill in some of the free time Friday evening for our 4 th /5 th year campers that elected to do the knife building the following morning. This project was a bare bones fishing necklace, which consisted of nylon string, rubber tubing (used as neck padding), large snap swivels, and wooden beads. It was designed to carry the forceps, snips, or anything else they would need in their future endeavors. Additionally we offered a zinger, forceps, and snips in the camp store if they wanted to customize with some of the basic accessories. All the kid where more than eager to learn, and picked up on the necklace project pretty quickly! I had two club members assisting with the class which definitely helped since this was the first time to teach this project. The most challenging part was keeping the necklace straight and the beads uniform on the nylon string, but this was overcome with the help of Cliff and Carmen, who were pros by the end of the evening! All the kids customized there necklaces with beads of different shapes and sizes making them unique and personal. If we decide to do this again next year there will be some minor tweaks to the directions to hopefully fine tune this project a little more. We teach the ideas of conservation, sportsmanship, and angling. The Ohio chapter was formed in 1947, with our first campfire weekend in The Memorial Day Campfire Weekend is the annual event where youths are mentored through a six-year program that teaches specific angling skills and the appreciation of our natural world. They help us run classes, help keep the young attendees focused on task, run errands, and are the biggest help during our campfire ceremony. This year we had we had 12!!! Thanks for all your help this year - you did a great job! Casting Competition William Adkins We have many youths at camp with fond memories from their previous Casting Kids experience. We wish we could give every youth an award for their effort, but there can only be one winner in each younger age group to be presented with a gift for their efforts. Our 3rd-year youths competed at Camp Logan but there was still much competition with the 1st and 2nd year youths. I look forward to each campfire and the opportunity to teach the new and returning youths skills to aid in their growth as an angler.
