1 MLFT Newsletter Thursday, March 15th, :00 P.M. Shawn Holsinger - Fishing West Central Pennsylvania Streams Shawn Holsinger, lives in East Freedom, PA with his wife and three children. He serves as head Pro Staffer in his father's fly shop Shawn also produces and manages his very popular YouTube Channel for Holsinger's Fly Shop with over 200 videos covering everything from fly tying techniques and patterns to videos of his fishing trips and tips on fly fishing. By keeping the focus of his videos mainly towards keeping it simple and gearing it towards the beginning tier, he has managed to grow his channel to over 5,000 subscribers and over 725,000 views. Shawn started fly fishing and fly tying at the age of 12 when he was

2 taught by his fishing mentor to swing wet flies. Over the years, he has learned to drift dry flies and nymph fish. Growing up in West Central Pennsylvania with it's limestone rich streams and great wild trout populations has afforded him many fishing opportunities. His years of experience along with the popularity of his YouTube channel has also offered him many chances to fish with the fly rod in many locations. From Cutthroats in Colorado, to the spawning runs of the Great Lakes, to Peacock Bass in Miami and salt water fishing in the Keys, but his true passion is still fishing for trout around his home. Fish commission Survey on Fish commission Web site. Surprise, Surprise. The fish commission is having financial problems again. The question they are asking on the Fish commission website is whether to raise license fees or cut back services. Cutting back services means fewer fish, and less water quality protection. I would like to urge people and go on the website and fill out the survey and support increases in license fees. License fees have not increased in years and they need the money. We need to protect our streams and support conservation. The money spent on fishing licenses is very small compared to the money we spend on rods, reels, waders, flies, etc. Think about it. We spend much more money on gas driving to streams than we do on licenses. What is the good will all this equipment, if there are no trout? Early, Early, Season Fishing. When I grew up in N.Y.C, opening day was April 1 st. I fished streams north of the city and in the Catskills on opening day and there was usually snow on the ground and you could count on your guides freezing up for most of the morning. Until recently, opening day in Pa. was not until mid-april and in our region it seemed to have

3 summer weather by the time the trout season finally opened. At least now, in our region, the opening day is the first weekend in April. Fortunately, we have delayed-harvest and catch and release streams that are open all year and are stocked early and should be taken advantage of. There is some surprisingly good fishing in our area in late February and March. On the limestone streams there are BWO s hatching in Mid-to-late March. For me, a more interesting hatch, are black and brown stoneflies that hatch on most area streams. Even with snow on the ground and the water temperature at 40 degrees, these insects still hatch. They are good size bugs and the trout love them. Black flymphs and similar patterns work well. Areas streams such as French Creek, Little Lehigh and the Tulpehocken all have them. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto Plymouth Road. At the light, turn right onto Germantown Pike West. Continue approximately one (1) mile, through four (4) traffic lights (not counting the left hand turn light at Sandy Hill Road). At the fifth light, turn right onto Jolly Road. The Community Center is on the right at 2910 Jolly Road. From Blue Route (I-476) Take exit for Germantown Pike West (Exit 20). Continue on Germantown Pike west for approximately one (1) mile, through five (5) traffic lights (not counting the left hand turn light at Sandy Hill Road). At the fifth light, turn right onto Jolly Road. The Community Center is on the right at 2910 Jolly Road. From Route 202 Follow Route 202 to Germantown Pike. Travel EAST on Germantown Pike, through five (5) traffic lights. At the next traffic light, approximately half a mile, turn left onto Jolly Road. The Com- munity Center is on the right at 2910 Jolly Road.
